Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
NurseSunshine · 28/11/2010 18:23

White stilton is pasteurised and does not have the bacteria added that yucky blue stilton does so it's ok :)

Glad you're feeling rough again sofakitten and TTL (You know what I mean!! Grin)

Right I need a quick poll:
Who is getting the flu jab specifically because they are pregnant, not because of underlying health problems such as asthma?

And, Why?

I'm so torn!

NurseSunshine · 28/11/2010 18:24
SofaKitten · 28/11/2010 18:37

Nurse I understand what you mean although what other circumstance do you hope people are feeling ill and throwing up?!

Re flu jab: hmmm, dunno really. Not until after 12 weeks certainly, then I probably will but only because I work in a school and GET RUDDY FLU EVERY BLOODY YEAR.... proper knock you out for a week flu as well.

  • usually timed well over a school holiday...

I think the dangers of the jab are lower than the dangers of having flu given that I WILL DEFINITELY GET IT anyway...

sighs

catherineps · 28/11/2010 18:41

I work in a school as well so it's pretty much inevitable - I've had a cough this week and there is literally nothing you can take. Nobody's mentioned the flu jab to me though so don't know. Fever is bad news I think so might be a good idea . . .

Leroy how did you fall asleep in Harry Potter??? It was so exciting!!

bananarama05 · 28/11/2010 18:41

I was going to scream this afternoon if my dad asked once more if I wanted to share a baked camambert in the pub! I know theoretically it's ok if cooked but I think the only way I'd risk it was if it was at home and I knew it was cooked through.

Flu jab? I'm tempted but mw/doctors haven't mentioned a thing to me about it, was going to ask at my 17 week appointment in a few weeks.

Initial thoughts are that I think I probably will go for it. I had a bad cold a few weeks back that really knocked the wind out of me, I have no idea how I'd cope with flu without being able to take anything for it.

What are the negatives/drawbacks out of interest??

bananarama05 · 28/11/2010 19:08

just out of interest is anyone thinking about / has previously been to NCT classes and would you recommend them?

8rubberduckies · 28/11/2010 19:53

Evening - just doing my daily check-in! Had a mammoth 12 hours sleep last night, and am already yawning on the sofa! I think my partner thinks I am putting it on so he gets up with ds every morning! He didn't experience my mammoth tiredness phase of pregnancy last time as I was in NZ. I spent a fortune on a holiday of a lifetime, 5 weeks travelling around on my own, and spent most of it asleep! Blush

This cold has been going on for days now, and only just seems to be on it's way out. I wasn't considering the flu jab, but after experiencing how rough I've felt the last few days with just a cold am seriously thinking about it now.

Barbie I prefer Danielle, but both are lovely names. Our ds was a really stuffy-nosed baby, and rather than giving him a pillow when he was younger we propped up one end of his cot a couple of inches by popping a book under each leg at the head end. Worked a treat!

Sofa my ms all but disappeared this week (I'm 10+1 weeks), but has reared it's ugly head again today. It's not been anywhere near as bad though, just nausea and heartburn, so I am hoping it is not going to get worse. Exactly the same thing happened with ds as well, so fingers crossed today is just a blip, and the worst of it is over for you!

Jasmine you poor thing! Feet up and hope you feel better soon. I gave up takeaways later in my 1st pg as I had food poisoning twice in a row from them; I felt like my stomach was a lot more sensitive than usual. I'm sure that your babba will be fine, but may be worth giving up any food you are not sure of the provenance of, just in case.

Leroy I secretly want a 2nd boy at the moment, not sure why, but I wonder what it would be like to have a little girl. Maybe I'll change my mind later on in the pg...

petitech · 28/11/2010 20:21

Nurse I had the flu jab at about week 10, no after effects and had my scan on friday so no damage done... and midwife looked at me like I was insane when I even suggested could there be a risk? After having a stinking cough this week am quite grateful to avoid anything harsher like flu. Nightmare not being able to just take the usual things like lemsip, flu tablets etc
Balletpink I'm intrigued by your unscientific method of deduction on sex of the bean :), do tell!!
On the MS front, definitely feel better although I seem to feel a bit dodgy whenever I'm tired, which I guess fits in with low blood sugar levels. Have actually put on 12 lbs now!!!!!!!!
Barbie I think Gabriella is lovely, I like Gabrielle too but somehow Gabriella sounds prettier.

Leroy, I think it is perming that is not recommended, colouring is fine.

I have a humidifier which has an essential resevoir, I use that when DS is full of snot and put a few drops of baby karvol or olbus oil in the resevoir.

You can also get the ones you hang over the radiator as well.

Sofakitten Grin at feeling sick = normal!

TTL - Yep I had a similar losing my lunch incident as well this afternoon!

Mmmmmm white stilton and apricots, and Wensleydale with cranberries!

8rubberduckies · 28/11/2010 21:05

Leroy dying your hair is yet another activity on the list that we're meant to avoid Angry. I am thinking of hermetically sealing my front door and living on fizzy water, filtered air, and vitamin tablets alone for the next 6 months, wearing only clothes made from the wool of newborn organically reared lambs, and definitely no makeup, or potential fun, allowed past the doors by the very large bouncers protecting my child's interests.

Rant over. It's been a long day Wink.

catherineps · 28/11/2010 21:06

I think hair dye is one of those things they recommend you avoid if you can, but there's no evidence it will do any harm. I have terrible roots! Also have a feeling it's not as bad in 2nd trimester but may be making that up . . .

Love the name Harry but not Hermione or Ron!

Petitech here is totally, completely, unscientific manner of determining sex from 12wk scan pic.... if the baby has a balloon-like, sticky-out tummy in the scan pic, it's a boy. If the baby has a relatively flattish tummy it's a girl. Yes - forget 3-d scans, this is all you need - NOT! Wink This has worked in quite a few scan pics I've seen, however my young niece's 12wk scan pic showed the biggest balloon tummy ever and she's definitely a girl! It's just for fun of course... I love to speculate!

petitech · 28/11/2010 21:22

But on that basis I thought the belly on our scan was quite balloon like, e.g. would mean a boy not girl?! I just did an equally unscientific test www.chineseastrology.com/ancientbirthchart.html, this one says male?! Based on fact I'm 32 and conceived in September. We'll see hey!!! Thanks for your diagnosis!:)

Balletpink · 28/11/2010 21:41

Some 12wk scan pics I've seen, the baby's chin is practically resting on the tummy, it's such a balloon! Grin But honestly, it's just a bit of silliness. If it was that easy to tell from the scan pic everyone would be diagnosing correctly at 12wks - it's just something my friend told me a few years ago and it's stuck in my mind, as these things do...

Clarkiee · 28/11/2010 21:52

Just looked at my scan pics. The tummys look a bit balloony but then I don't have another pic to compare it to so it could be comparatively flatish- hmmm Hmm.

I'm torn about whether I want girls or boys. I have three brothers and no sisters which always made me want a boy and the thought of two teenage girls is a bit scary. But when I think about my relationship with my mum it makes me want a girl.

My mum told me today that when the twins are born shes thinking about taking 2 months from all her activities to help out(shes retired but is a majostrate and is involved in art exhibitions amost various things) which is amazing Grin

milliemuffin · 28/11/2010 22:16

The 2 main reasons for avoiding hair dye are a) the fumes can make you feel extra queasy and b) your hormones are all over the place and the hair/skin might react badly to the dye but as far as I'm aware it's ok for baby. The preferred option is foils as there are much less fumes and very little skin/root contact. But that's just what my hairdressers (all the same salon) have told me. Xx

79monica · 29/11/2010 07:53

I have just got to work and i has started snowing. My scan is this afternoon. I brought my walking boots with me so if needed I can walk to the hospital from work in about half an hour, but DH works 30 mins drive away. Fingers crossed the weather doesn't get any worse, the roads stay open and he still makes it for the appointment!

LisasCat · 29/11/2010 08:20

I get flu every damn year, again from working in a school, and this time it came early. About a month ago I was struck and, on top of all the pregnancy symptoms, I was completely broken. I was off work for a week, and then struggling in for the next 2, while the congestion, sore throat, achey limbs and pounding head continued. I think my colleagues genuinely believed I'd caught some exotic strain of an animal species flu, because this just was not shifting.

So in conclusion...do whatever you can not to catch this year's flu strain on top of also being prgnant.

Sarahmumtobe · 29/11/2010 09:11

Hope you and DP make it to scan ok Monica -so exciting-let us know how you get on.

knackered76 · 29/11/2010 09:37

Good luck those with scans today, think it's 79Monica and Moomin Grin. Sorry if I've left anyone off that, or if I have added someone who isn't Grin!

We finally have snow, but it's fairly pathetic so not expecting any snowmen this time :)

Mummynumber2 · 29/11/2010 09:56

I really hope your dp and you both make it Tongue scan Monica. Good luck, and to others with scans too!

My bleeding's now just spotting. But I have something new to worry about now! tmi alert!. When I woke up this morning it immediately felt like I'd had a lot of bleeding in the night. I jumped up and felt another little gush. Then worked out it wasn't blood but clear watery stuff. Dp's phoned the hospital and they're going to get back to us. I know you can have a lot of discharge but this is something different, am terrified it's amniotic fluid leaking! Had anyone else ever had or heard of anything like this? Bit of googling hasn't really given me any answers!

Mummynumber2 · 29/11/2010 10:02

That's supposed to be to your scan, not Tongue scan! I swear my I phone has a mind of it's own!

Is it snowing everywhere apart from where I am?!

BarbieLovesKen · 29/11/2010 10:07

Mummynumber2 - I know this sounds silly but are you sure you didnt pee slightly? (this has happened to sooo many people I know)
