Muser · 06/11/2010 10:25

mixedmama the 2010 model of the Bee is meant to be a lot more roomy, it's the Bee Plus. I've seen some more recent reviews commenting that it has a lot more space in it.

I'm planning on the Bee as I am reliant on public transport and have been told by a number of people that it is just the best for that. If I end up buying a cheap lightweight pram in a few years I think it will still have been worth it. I don't want a pram that I struggle to get on buses/trains/tubes as then I'll never go out.

OP posts:
Larty74 · 06/11/2010 11:03

Mixedmama believe me I have done the research (and then some Blush) and all I've read and heard word of mouth is to go straight for the maclaren techno xlr. thats what I'm going to see today actually. want to see how it all works and do it ourselves before we decide. the best price i've found for it is on this website :

www.babyandco.co.uk

(hope i did the hyperlink right!)

Anyway, everyone has said they'd been through 5 different prams and wish they'd started with this one to begin with. so definitely would save money.

1Catherine1 · 06/11/2010 12:47

Good luck with the Buggy shopping Larty. My OH picked ours from Kiddiecare but until I find somewhere local to test it out and see what it's like I'm not ready to commit. Do intend to buy it before the VAT rise though even if that only means I save £5 it's £5 I'd rather keep Wink

sittinghippo it was clear skies in Stoke Park last night, the only hint of rain I got was when I was nearly back home. The display was quite impressive, we got there quite early and took up a spot next to the border fence so I had something to lean on. Only bad thing was we were down wind from the fireworks so all the little bits we covering us.

Jupiter I couldn't resist the temptation to check my notes after your comment and also found the comment "Ultrasound view: restricted due to increased BMI" I should have just resisted, I made it a full 24 hours before checking though :) On the bright side I looked further down to see the word "normal" over and over again. That made me smile.

Anyway, I'm off out today to pick up the cot bed I've bought. Not feeling great to be honest since I've started to find it difficult to sleep. Last night I was so tired I was in bed by 10:30pm only to wake up at 3:30am with a strange feeling in my chest (probably very common but I've never had it before, think it's just indigestion) that made lying down uncomfortable. I got up and went to watch some TV (Thank god for Sky+) and then after my morning sickness came back (first time I've actually been sick in weeks) I felt so down that I cried for half an hour then spent 2 hours cleaning the kitchen - I bet my neighbours that live in the flat below just love me :) Please tell me I'm not the only one who is struggling to sleep already!

Muser · 06/11/2010 14:14

The thing that puts me off the Maclaren is it's not forward facing. I really want a forward facing pram for the first year.

OP posts:
Southsearocks · 06/11/2010 18:12

Hi again,

Forgot to say due 21st March so please add me to the list! I keep waking up with a numb hand - is this normal in pregnancy?

EvianBaby · 06/11/2010 20:36

Hi SittingHippo I hope your little girl is feeling better. DS has had a virus that seems to be going around... v high temperature (was about to have a fit when the paramedic arrived apparently), drowsy, vomiting, sore throat, terrible cough, difficulty breathing etc. He is getting better now (finally) but still hasn't got his appetite back. I'm sure he'll be back to normal soon. Thanks for asking Smile

It's exciting to hear about everyone's plans for prams/pushchairs. We currently have a Bugaboo Cameleon, which I personally think is fab (if a little big when collapsed), and we have never needed to buy a second, more lightweight one (such as a Maclaren), however we are going to need to buy a double pushchair of some description... Hmm. Haven't found one that I love yet or that fits our needs perfectly. I really want a parent facing option for the newborn, easily collapsed, ideally with both children able to see out but not huge in size! I don't want much do I?!? If anyone has any suggestions they will be gratefully received! Grin Oh, one more thing, it would be great if it could work as a single when DS is at nursery...

If anyone is looking at nursery furniture at the moment then Mama's and Papa's have 20% off some of their ranges this weekend.

Oooh, I am looking forward to the pregnancy grant we get from 28 weeks (or whenever it is), we didn't get this when I was pregnant last time. However we did get the Child Trust Fund that we don't get this time.

Have a good Sat night everyone!

lia66 · 06/11/2010 21:12

Hi all,

Great news on all the good scans this week.

catherine little girls, this new one will be our 4th, we also have 2 boys. :)

Had our scan Weds too and all present and correct, she's breech but nor fussed about that cos they move about so much until latter weeks that it's not even worth thinking about yet.

I think I'm considering either

Hauck infinity which I had before, lovely size carrycot and great seat size too, I had dd in it till she was 3 facing me.

Looked at mothercare My4 but carrycot size is just 12in across so not much wear out of that.

Looked at Oyster too but need to look at measurements.

Pliko pramette I had in early days before and it's nice to push but pushchair doesn't face you, in pushchair mode, baby faces out.

Bugaboo, seat unit isn't that generous either, none of these new fangled versions are.

What I'd really like is a lovely Silver cross kensington but being last baby, Ican't justify cos even second hand. :(

Have good weekend all. :)

TooImmature2BMum · 06/11/2010 21:44

I was looking at prams and car seats yesterday too and was Shock at prices! Have been considering buying v cheap from-birth pushchair and a sling for rough terrain when walking the dog, instead of a all-terrain type pram. Anyone got any experience with the Premaxx/BabaSling styles? I like the way you can look down at the baby's face, but can't help thinking she might just roll out of it by accident - shouldn't there be a harness of some kind? Confused

Is there anyone else out there who is feeling completely deflated now that the 20 week scan excitement is over? I'm 23+2 now and just feel like all there is to do now is wait and wait and wait some more. There are still 4 months to wait and it's getting me down. I keep getting very grumpy at nothing, and I can't seem to summon any enthusiasm for name-picking or anything, really. Just a bit sorry for myself right now! Anyone else the same?

For all those mums looking at prams, if your planning on having more than one I would recommend the phil and ted, I know it's hard to think about more than one at this stage but I love my phil and ted, we got it when I was expecting no 2 and it is great now for DD2 and will do as a twin for no 2 and 3, it's so versatile and easy to use. It's a great investment in the long term!

JoJoB77 · 07/11/2010 10:09

Morning ladies

Hope you are all well.

1Catherine1 I've not been feeling too good either and had my first migraine in years yesterday. I'm a bit all over the place today too but more emotionally, I think I could cry at anything! I'm sure it will pass soon and sorry for starting on a down note, it's nice to know I'm not some sort of crazy woman (well, DH probably thinks I am...)

Anyway! It's a lovely day here in sunny Shropshire, I've felt baby wriggle away this morning and we have the scan on Thursday so trying to keep it all in perspective Smile

It's interesting to hear your opinions on buggies/prams - there is too much choice!

Have a lovely day all x

mixedmamameansbusiness · 07/11/2010 10:12

In terms of forward facing, I wanted this too, but think I may have to compromise this point. However, if I go for the McClaren then I will be getting the carry cot aswell, and whilst it wont last a year it will mean I can have baby facing me for a while. I plan to get a buggy board and a baby bjorn sling too so hopefully am covering all my bases.

In terms of the excitement waning now that scans are pretty much over, I think there is a lull, but in afew works time shopping will take over so that is a whole load of new excitement.

I am spending this morning listing everything we "need" as essentials and then going on the kiddicare website to compare prices and if overall we can make a decent saving we will make a trip from London to get eveyrthing all at once.

sarahscot · 07/11/2010 12:22

I have the Huack Infinity too, had it for DS, Dneice has used it and it's still in perfect condition for DD when she's born. I love it, it steers brilliantly, can push with one hand, and it looks good. Only draw back is the small basket underneath.

Someone once said to me "Oh, you've got the Hauck Infinity? It's the poor man's Bugaboo isn't it?"
In that it's just as good but costs less, yes I suppose so, but it was about £400 for the whole lot inc car seat so not that cheap.

PipPipPip · 07/11/2010 14:01

Jupiter118 I'm also trying to improve my front crawl! Not that I'm too worried about breaststroke in pregnancy but just because I'd like to be a better swimmer. Was thinking of getting lessons, and thought it'd be funny to get lessons while the size of a whale!

JoJo and Catherine sorry that you're not feeling brilliant.

20 week scan on Tuesday, can't wait.

Larty74 · 07/11/2010 14:43

Have just started to look at the Hauck stuff having never really given it a good chance at first. Found out it's german made so can't go wrong with that, and incredibly well priced on kiddiecare. just hard to come by in the shop to actually see it work even though there is the video. (love those)

Lots of people say from 6 months on, their baby was much happier facing out anyway, so not too bothered about that. everyones unique tho and u never know what you're gonna get!

As far as carriers go - ideal for dog walks, I've picked up a baby bjorn at an nct sale but has anyone seen the Moby Wrap baby carrier? A mum drops off at my school everyday with her baby in it, and he looks so comfy and secure, I think I want one too.

jammiedodger2 · 07/11/2010 16:00

Hiya
am also feeling sorry for myself today. My bump is sore all over and my 'nurses back' which has done so well up until now has finally given up and hurts. I have set dd up with her home work and am going to go get in the bath in a mo to see if that helps.
Re Hauck pushchair, got mine on amazon at £100 off so worth checking there larty . I have abused my role as a health visitor slightly and had a good look at what my mums use and asked them if they are happy!
We didn't need to buy a car seat as for some reason ours was still in the loft (rest of travel system went to charity shop about 5 years ago Confused ). Also with my back I don't really want to be lifting it in and out of the car as they can get quite heavy and bulky so it doesn't matter if it doesn't fit/match the pushchair.
I've bought a 'close' sling on ebay for £30 which is about half rrp, second hand but in perfect condition. Again it was one some of my mums liked and I can't do the over one shoulder type because of the back.
Luckily we've been able to beg and borrow the other big things!
anyway nice warm bath is calling.
Hope evryone feels better tomorrow, at least we're over half way!
love
jx

1Catherine1 · 07/11/2010 16:48

Hope you feel better after the bath Jammie.

A few months ago there was an article in "practical parenting" about those baby slings. I bought the mag just for that article it was asking if they were safe. Summary of the article is that the one shoulder ones are safe if you use them properly - if not they could potentially suffocate the baby. Of course I'm not trying to frighten anyone just making you aware so you know when you get them. I still want one as I hate prams but am going for the Snug baby one so that I can spread the weight over both shoulders as I also have back problems.

Quote from the article for anyone who is interested
the T.I.C.K.S rule for safe baby wearing: Tight, In view at all times, Close enough to kiss, Keep chin off the chest, Supported back.

Practical Parenting and Pregnancy (June 2010).

Well I got home today after doing some shopping to find one of my cats in the crib and the other in the cot bed. It's a good job I haven't bought the new mattresses yet. I need to work out how I'm going to keep them out of there when I have and more importantly when baby comes. Hmm I've been investigating car seats today, went to Mama and Papas and spoke to a sales assistant that knew very little so I gave up and went to Halfords and spoke to a sales assistant who was familiar with my problem with my KA and offered a safe alternative. Although the total cost of this is a massive £180 for a base and a car seat. :( It's a lot of money but I suppose you can't put a price on baby's safety. I wonder if any of my kind relative want to buy me a really big Christmas present... Wink

superpenguin · 07/11/2010 17:37

oooh prams / pushchairs / car seats / travel systems / whatever they are called.
I have no idea where to begin!
not done any research or looked in any shops or websites at all yet, but have vague idea of what I want (something that can convert from flat pram to sitting pushchair and can turn around to be either forward or rear facing).
Will get round to investigating one day!
They do seem terribly expensive though.

haloflo · 07/11/2010 18:53

Wow suddenly I feel very overwhelmed! There is so much to consider with a buggy/travel system/pram and they are so expensive. I don?t think we can afford to get this wrong.

tooimmature I am thinking along the same lines as you and want a sling. I live in a second floor flat without a lift so feel it would be important to be able to get out on my own when DP?s not around to help carry a pram but too keep thinking that with the babasling and the like the LO might fall out by accident. I didn?t know anything about the chance of suffocation Catherine which has now become a new worry. However because I?ve never heard anything in the news about this it makes me wonder if the risks are minimal. All the websites for things like babaslings refer to them being safer on a developing back compared to more structured carriers but again this could just be playing on a tiny risk. How do I know what is best? Presumably if I went to the shop I could get a feel of what would work for me?

Anyone else any ideas how I will manage the stairs? I hear the Maclaren?s are light but no option of front facing. I have no official storage downstairs although there is room to leave something folded temporarily. Also the poor thing is going to be woken every time to have to leave the house and come home. I feel a few shopping trips followed by hours of research online are needed. From reviews I have read prams seem such a personal choice people either love or hate the one they have. It?s all very subjective!

Am so glad I still have months to think all this over!

southsearocks I also wake up with a numb hand. I am prone to pins and needles at the moment too. Maybe something to do with the blood flow being prioritised elsewhere!

PipPipPip All the best of Tuesday. Same for everyone else with scans next week.

Next time the list is done could someone remove my scan date? If it?s not done before my repeat scan Tuesday I will hopefully update with the sex if he/she is in a better position.

Lozario · 07/11/2010 19:31

Hello everyone, just a quick check-in - sounds like there are a few germs flying around, me, DH and DS are all sick at the moment with this horrible cold/sore throat thing and also it's DH's turn for the hand, foot and mouth disease and you'd really think it was going to kill him, the way he's going on! Even DS (17 months) was braver than him with it!!

Our scan isn't until a week on Friday, at my south London hossie they do them at 22 weeks. It's come around SO fast.

re: buggies, I really agree with niamh29 that if it's your first baby, but you know you want for than 1 with a shortish gap, go for the Phil and Teds - I wish I had with DS1, all of the buggies we've had so far just haven't done the job, but they are all second hand or free from family so can't complain too much!

southsearocks that numb hand thing is carpal tunnel syndrome I think - numb or hot/itchy hands and/or feet, because the blood is going elsewhere; I laughed at Modern Family on Sky the other day because the Columbian woman calls it carpool tunnel syndrome Grin

JoJoB77 I had my first migrane a few weeks back too - before that I thought of them as "a bad headache".... but OMG I wanted someone to kill me!!!!! I think it must be to do with dehydration so I'm drinking as much as poss, but it's hard to remember with the DS running around all day.

Good luck to everyone with scans this week, time for Strictly and X Factor results shows now Grin

niamh29 · 07/11/2010 20:29

Is the numb hand thing carpel tunnel???? I get that numb hand when I wake up every time I'm pregnant and just read it was normal and forgot it, I don't get pins and needles so didn't think it was carpel tunnel??

I am officially out of my last pair of non-maternity trousers : (( and I do look pregnant now so must tell the rest of the people I haven't told yet, also think I'm finally feeling some flutters and small movements, bout time, I'm nearly 21 weeks! I've a docs apt tues so looking forward to hearing the heartbeat!

Jupiter118 · 07/11/2010 22:55

Hello,

Hope all have had good weekends. Nice here -went to Disney on Ice which both DS and I enjoyed - DH must less convinced, but was my birthday (and I did pay for the tickets). Can no longer claim early thirties though (35 Sad) - feel old!

Glad wasn't only one with rude comments on scan notes!!

Prams - random thoughts...

Had a loola for DS as at the time it was the only one that would fold small enough to go in the boot of a beetle (car of the time). Was good pram - carry cot available which was probably the best bit and did have a strap in it. Would quite like new covers for seat unit though this time. Seat unit could face to or from and car seat could clip in also.

We also then had a silver cross umbrella fold 'pop' buggy - which was good and could be used from birth, but then also ended up with a Quinny Zapp (fit of rage that silver cross wouldn't go in the beetle boot and wanted to use a lightweight buggy). Have to say Zapp was great and got lots of use from 1-3.5 - still use occasionally now when DS being ultra lazy. They have just brought out a Zapp xtra though which can be used from birth (wonder if they might sell the seat unit for existing frame???) - not sure what like, but probably quite lightweight.

Yes I know - too many prams, but will use them all again.

If I was having a new one this time though I quite like the look of bugaboo, quinny buzz or the phil and teds. Best ot go somewhere and 'test drive' them and try in boot of car etc.

Can't believe is Monday again tomorrow - early train - London for meeting.

Jx

Morning all...

I get the numbness too. I just accept as part of pregnancy.

Anyway small milestones reached this weekend:

DH felt baby move for the first time

DH and I saw my belly actually move for the first time.

Ridiculously pleased that I managed to squeeze some liquid out of my breasts - I may be mad but I love to know that they are working and getting ready and fingers crossed BF will go better for me this time... 1 month has been my record for various reasons so hoping for better this time.

Hello!
not been about that much over the last couple of weeks- been hectic here with a busy half term then a busy first week back at school. I worked a full week- it was hell! I think all you mums to be who are working FT deserve a medal- I usually only do 3 days a week and am bl*y glad that I am back to that this week. (well, except do have to go in 2 eves for parent's eve...Hmm) I was shattered! The hardest bit was not seeing DD though- and she has been really tricky since as well. Possibly a co-incidence but I keep telling myself it is because she missed me, not just that she is a right little monkey! Grin

Second fetal heart scan was Thursday- all is good in that department. We have now been signed off from St Thomas'and are back to a normal, low risk pregnancy. Hurrah! Have even been contemplating home birth now- though think I have decided against.

We went really low cost with baby stuff for DD and were given an old mamas and papas buggy and a three wheeler (one of the original ones I think, no rotating front wheel!) for free. We just made do with them, but then I didn't really use them at all as I carried DD everywhere. Have started using the three wheeler as she has got too big to carry and I have got too pregnant to be picking her up all the time!
haloflo I have a babasling and am planning to use that to carry the newbie while DD rides in the buggy/walks when we go out. We are also in a second floor flat with no lift and it is a bit of a pain TBH. The council have just banned us from even folding our buggy and leaving it downstairs as well Angry. It's a fire hazard, apparently, along with door mats, plants and pictures. Hmm DD was little though, 6lb1oz. I used it all the time when she was small, then moved onto a ergo when she was about 3 months old. I went back to the baba sling to carry her on my hip when she was about 9months. I found it brilliant, but I have raved about it to friends and they have not been able to get on with it, so it might be worth seeing if you can try one out for a bit before you spend the money on them. Slings/baby carriers are definitely the way to go for a flat though, I found I could get back with a sleeping baby and transfer her to her bed sometimes. You'll find a way to make it work for you.

Well, it's really nasty here today, windy and rainy and DD is being whingy so have put her for an early sleep and am planning to go for a blustery walk this pm. Made Jamie Oliver's rum, raisin and banana pudding yesterday which included about a ton of cream and have already snaffled two portions so far today. Must stop, or will be even harder to get into my coat! Hope all those with scans this week have happy news, and everyone is enjoying those wriggles and bangs!

Hello people!

Mixed, congratulations on baby movement! DH has felt baby move exactly once, about 2 weeks ago. Last night was lying with his hand on my tummy and baby was kicking away and he said he didn't feel a thing, grr! Usually she stops moving the instant he touches me.

Also, liquid out of breasts already? Wow! Restrains self from running to toilets to see if I can do that...not at work!

Loving the pram/sling discussions - so much information that I just wouldn't have known without you! I feel your pain with the flats/prams issue. I used to live in 3rd floor tenement flat with small twisty stairs and people were so anal about me leaving my bike chained to the banisters at the bottom. It was right out of the way standing on rear wheel, but I still got nasty notes through the door. Wish people would just live and let live!

Have started heartburn/acid reflux feelings in the last 2 days. Sad Hope it doesn't last for the next 16 and a half weeks! Does it mean the baby is pushing my stomach up already?
