Hi all and Happy New Year! I'm 30 weeks on Weds, back at work on Tuesday but I'm restricted to working from home all the time and only doing half days because of SPD, so it's not too bad. I'm planning to finish work at the end of Jan, my holiday leave runs Jan-Dec which is quite handy.

I hope you're all well, it suddenly doesn't seem too far away now that we're into January! ShockSmile

Medee · 03/01/2011 10:04

best wishes for Tuesday, Purplefan.

KPidgeon · 03/01/2011 13:46

haloflo and anyone else- if you are measuring a week ahead or a week behind is that an indication that you will give birth a week earlier/later than your due date? Just wondering..

I've got a midwife appointment on Thursday so look forward to finding out if she thinks the bump is bigger than 28 weeks.

Just sitting here watching 3 men and a baby and thinking how dated it is. All that fluffy bedding and lace- I'd worry about the baby choking!

Boo- back in work tomorrow. What a shame.

Larty74 · 03/01/2011 13:48

Hello everyone - and happy new year to all! Everyone's stories sound so familiar, which is comforting in a way. I've been shopping to my hearts content for LO over here in america - everything is SO cheap, they are giving stuff away. good thing its small otherwise i'm not sure how I'd get it all back. might have to buy another bag Blush.

I've discovered a new way to sleep which has been fab as my hips/bum go numb by early am from being on my sides so much. Anyway, involves loads of pillows, i'm semi-reclined, pillows on either side of bump and one under my knees - bliss! Can't find any other comfortable position even when awake and now needing help w/ shoes and getting out of chair Blush what fun!

so sorry to hear about your illness Lozario and hope you are all on the mend. Very glad I got the jab.

Has all the snow disappeared over there?

haloflo · 03/01/2011 14:21

muser Thank you. Lying on my side helped. And I got a nice early night as a bonus. Little and often food wise from now on!

kpidgeon I was measuring 29 weeks at 28+4 so not too much out. Baby was head down but not engaged. Was an interesting appointment actually, good to know what is going on in there. She didn't mention the likely impact on the date I give birth would just kept reassuring me I wouldn't have a massive baby! She said they would be keeping track of its size at every appointment, hoping for a steady growth rate. Keep us updated as to how your appointment goes.

larty Snow has completly gone here (NW England) and I hope it stays away! How long you in america for? Well done on getting lots of bargains.

purplefan All the best for the heart scan tomorrow.

Larty74 · 03/01/2011 15:58

We are here another week! Loads of time to do more damage. It's especially hard not to look at the "big" items like furniture, travel systems, etc. oh well, something to look forward to when I'm back.

Just heard from a friend there is snow in oxfordshire! Shock

1Catherine1 · 03/01/2011 19:14

Down here in Surrey the snow kept trying to make an appearance today but each snowy spell was brief and light so I think it is being sufficiently fought off for now. Unfortunately it is cold again. My chilly little flat gets cold so easily but has been ok for the last week, this evening though I'm sure the temperature outside has significantly dropped as even my poor little kitty cats are cold. One keeps getting under my blanket with me and the other has gone to sleep in front of the portable heater leaving little heat for the rest of us.

Got OH out pram shopping again, although my original intention was only to buy a few bits of baby clothes. We went to a small Mothercare where I picked up a Starter Set in New baby size, Some vests in New baby size and a few vests in Tiny baby size just in case. I'm actually totally clueless on how many of what I'm supposed to get since I have no idea how big she'll be before we meet her. Maybe you more experienced amongst us can enlighten me? OH picked another pram I hated as it would leave me with 2 car seats with one fitting in the car and one fitting on the pram - hardly practical. I liked the Mothercare My Choice one until the sales woman told me that it would last me up to 2 years max which I think isn't really that long for £375. The pram hunt continues...

OH and I finally picked a name last night that is to remain top secret with all real life friends and family for the next 11 weeks, but I can share it with you lot :) We have decided on Anya. I realized that maybe I was expecting too much to fall in love with a particular name and with the bar raised so high every name I came across was being crossed off. This one I like though and it works in both English and Spanish and goes quite well with OH surname. It is also a name that I know 0 children by, which as any of you teachers will know - can put you off certain names Wink

Larty74 · 03/01/2011 19:46

Lovely name Catherine know what you mean about teaching/names and not knowing ANY that are called what you've chosen - even if I wasn't a teacher!

We are pretty sure (99%) we are going wtih Blake but not telling anyone in real life.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 03/01/2011 20:26

sorry about the swine flu.... i had normal flu for weeks and it was awful beyond belief so will certainly be getting jabs in future.

Anya is one of my all time fave girls names.... lovely.

Blake is very sweet and different. \such blessed children to have sensible parents going for unique but not odd names.

mw tomorrow - not sure what to expect but do fancy finding out how he is lying although for no. 3 i imagine he wont get into position until labour.

love to all.

niamh29 · 03/01/2011 20:30

Catherine: this is what I normally bring into hospital for baby, I always get "newborn" size which generally fits for at least 2 weeks depending on birth weight (DD2 was 8.5lb and just got the bare 2 weeks, DD1 was 7.2lb and got longer out of them)

  • 6 sleepsuits
  • 6 vests
  • 1 hat and pair of scratch mitts
  • 1 towel
  • 1 or 2 cellular blankets
  • a few muslin cloths and bibs
  • a going home outfit including jacket
I think that's it but if I forgot anything someone else please add.
chickiewoo · 03/01/2011 21:19

Having a moan - our central heating broke down last night - typical - just hope it's something easy to fix and not the boiler, as we could really do without that expense at the mo! Fingers crossed - engineer coming tomorrow to hopefully fix it. Had terrible night's sleep with awful cramp in shins and calves yet again last night - has anyone any advice or tips please? I'm drinking tonic water in the evening as the quinine is supposed to help and also wearing knee high socks to bed under my jammies - very sexy indeedGrin. Other than that all is well! Going to start buying a few baby bits over the next couple of weeks - don't need any equipment as have everything from DS from 5 years ago which needs to come down from the loft. Good to hear all your news x

Medee · 03/01/2011 22:58

what's special about cellular blankets? Does a knitted blanket do the same thing?

niamh29 · 03/01/2011 23:15

It's just a blanket that has holes in it so if the baby puts it over their head they won't suffocate, I use the crochet blankets my mother makes, I'm sure a knitted blanket would be fine.
DD1 had a great trick when she was about 6 months of putting the blanket over her head and falling asleep, she thought it was great fun but it used to scare everyone else to death!

Medee · 03/01/2011 23:22

thanks niamh - sounds like the blankets my mum has been knitting will do fine then.

1Catherine1 · 04/01/2011 05:57

Morning ladies (although it feels like the middle of the night). Back to school today and I have been unable to sleep for most of the night - I have no idea why. I usually suffer with struggling to get to sleep the night before going back to school but today its been different, I went to bed at half past midnight and fell straight asleep but then woke at 2:30am, I have been unable to get back to sleep since. My alarm is going to go off in less than an hour and a half so I've decided it is probably better that I just get up and stay up rather than risk falling asleep at 6:30am and then feeling even worse when I wake. Strangely for the past week I've been waking up between 3am and 5am most days, was wondering if maybe it was a pregnancy thing that woke me and my usual sleeping problem that has kept me up. Most unfortunate, especially since I'm teaching only KS4 today.

Anyway, I think I'll get my breakfast and get ready. I hope your heating gets back on today Chickie, last thing you need right now. Lots of thanks for the info niamh, it is very helpful and I was worrying about buying too much that I then never use. Have a great day ladies, I will probably pop on this afternoon and I hope you have lots of interesting things to say because I'll need something to read to keep me awake :)

Muser · 04/01/2011 08:10

chickiewoo for the cramps, try a pillow under your ankles to raise your feet up, or a pillow between your knees to reduce the pressure.

Back to work today for me. Not impressed. But it's our first NCT class tonight, which is quite exciting!

OP posts:
spaceal · 04/01/2011 10:55

Hi all. I've been thinking about what I need to buy clothes-wise for the first few weeks, so Catherine's question and Niamh's answers were very helpful - thanks. I was browsing (looking gormless) in Mothercare the other day and a very helpful shop assistant did try to make suggestions for me, but I think she was a little disturbed that I wanted to buy boys sleepsuits for my little girl Grin - why do girls just get flowers and boys get monkeys, robots and dinosaurs?

We're moving house in early Feb so reluctant to buy too much stuff before we move, but I keep thinking that maybe the little one will arrive early and we'll have nothing - I'll be 35 weeks when we move.

We've decided on Lucy Jean as a name, Jean as a middle name not Lucy Jean altogether, IYSWIM. We've been decided for a while, but I do wonder if we'll change our minds when she arrives. I love Anya, Catherine - a friend who had a baby in September called her Anya, and Blake's great too Larty, as mixedmama says unique but not odd.

Back to work today, but get to work at home mostly, which is good. But I have piles of marking (work at a university) which I don't like the look of.

Oh, and we've got our first antenatal class tonight too, Muser.

spaceal · 04/01/2011 10:58

Should have asked Niamh and the other more experienced mums - do newborns wear vests and sleepsuits? Or only when out and about? And what sort of going home outfit would you need? How warm a jacket?

Thanks!

Muser · 04/01/2011 12:19

Wouldn't it be weird if it was the same class spaceal!

OP posts:
Oceanbreeze · 04/01/2011 13:04

Happy New Year all.

Am very impressed with all of you that have chosen names - we're really struggling. We have a shortlist, but not really drawn to any of them at the moment Confused

We have at last managed to sort out most of our shopping though - Babystyle Oyster, in, er, red I think & a crib and handfuls of vests & sleepsuits in newborn & 0-3 as who knows how big BabyOcean is going to be - size of bump seems enormous already. spaceal I know what you mean about the baby clothes - as we're having a surprise I thought I'd just get a selection - but the gendered clothing is really gendered, and the neutral stuff seems so dull. Although sainsburys have some black & white stuff that is cute without being sickening - and I read somewhere that babies recognise black & white first anyway.

It all seems so real now with names, and shopping, and prams, and classes Grin We have our first class this week too!

Purplefan hope all goes well today.

Lozario · 04/01/2011 13:06

Hey guys - thanks for get well wishes, we are now dressed every day again and apart from a painful hacking cough, I think we're recovered. Am getting checked over by the midwife this afternoon but baby is still moving all the time and so I'm sure everything is ok. We just feel so cheated out of our lovely long Christmas break! The more I talk to people, the more it seems you have to plead and beg to get the jab as a preggo woman - from now on, I'm going to pay for us all to get the jab every winter!!! I blame the government - last year the kids could get the jab but this year they aren't eligible. Apparently with the kids returning to school this week, they are expecting flu levels to reach epidemic proportions, with swine flu being the most common one, here in London anyway. Yuk yuk yuk!!! :(

spaceal yes, newborns generally where a vest and a sleepsuit - in fact I kept my DS1 in that kind of get-up for the first few months unless we were going somewhere really fancy - I didn't really see the point of going to the effort of actual outfits for him when he couldn't move anyway and jeans on a newborn just seems odd to me! People are a bit funny about it though - people used to say to me, "why is he still in his pyjamas?"! Hmm If I could wear a onesy every day, I would - they look so comfy!

1Catherine1 The pregnancy insomnia SUCKS doesn't it. I've been waking between 3-5 quite often, completely unable to go back to sleep. Doesn't help that DH really snores so I'm usually trying to dig out earplugs, or wrapping pillow around my head or something!

KPidgeon I measured a couple of weeks smaller throughout my pregnancy with DS1 and he was nearly 2 weeks late. Was a biggie though, 8lbs 7oz. And people keep telling me babies get bigger as you go on to have more - nooooo!!!! Shock

Right better go and tackle another corner of the house - god knows how I'll cope with it all when I have TWO kids??!! Eeek....

KPidgeon · 04/01/2011 13:17

Lozario so glad to hear you're on the mend and that the baby is moving a lot still- I'm sure he/she's fine then. What a horrid experience for you though.

Thanks for the info on the size of the tummy! I'm convinced I'm going to have a bruiser of a baby. I'll be so pleasantly surprised if I can "pop" (!) out a 6 or 7 lb-er! Grin

I too am waking up at 4.30/5am with no hope of getting back to sleep. Am wondering if I should try to go to bed an hour or so earlier (though we're already in bed by 10pm) or will that mean waking up at 3.30am/4am!

Maybe it's our bodies preparing us for the sleep deprivation that's around the corner for us all!

1Catherine! I think Anya is a beautiful name too. That would have been in the running for us if we had a girl. My husband and I have very differing tastes on boys names so goodness knows what he will end up being called. After watching Aurelio Zen on BBC 1 on Sunday night I decided I quite liked Rufus as a name.

spaceal · 04/01/2011 13:25

Muser - I'm in Newcastle/North Shields. Where are you? Hope your class does go well and that you meet some nice other couples.

flootshoot · 04/01/2011 13:26

Hi everyone - can I join? Bit late but better late than never!

I'm due on 23rd March, we're told it's a girl.... I already have a DS who's 2 in Feb. Currently trying to decide between a VBAC or elcs as DS was a crash section.

I'm fed up already though, just want this baby to be here already!! Grin

spaceal · 04/01/2011 13:26

Thanks Lozario for the clothing tips.
