I had my 24w appointment today too, Larty. Also all well, and good heartbeat. I didn't get weighed either, and forgot to ask. I did get my Mat B1 form though.

Larty74 · 22/11/2010 18:11

Good news Medee!

Muser · 22/11/2010 19:07

I didn't get weighed at my 24 week the other week. I also didn't get measured. I feel like I missed out.

coraltoes · 22/11/2010 19:23

Coco if you're travelling to Islington, the Angel Rooms has a special maternity bed, so you lie on your front, belly goes through a gap with a sling (so is supported) same for boobs. Truly brilliant!

me23 · 22/11/2010 20:16

Just wanted to say that it isn't routine to weigh at every appt usually only at booking or if high bmi may get weighed again but not at every appt. So you haven't missed out on anything the mw was 'supposed' to do.
However sfh should be meausred from 24 weeks though if mw had a feel then it is possible to tell from physical landmarks which equate sfh to week of pregnancy library.med.utah.edu/kw/human_reprod/mml/hrmaternal_L06.gif

Larty74 · 22/11/2010 21:11

sounds about right me23 GP had a feel and I could have weighed myself on the machine out in reception, just walked out and forgot.

ha. just realised how cruel a scale out in reception really is, but it's one of those ones that give you a printout w/ results. Wink

PipPipPip · 22/11/2010 21:42

Hi Coco29 this lady specialises in pregnancy massage PLUS she comes to your home! www.sophiekdavis.com I haven't used her but I think I might treat myself when I'm massive and uncomfortable later in pregnancy.

Glad to hear everyone is going well.

I got a bit overwhelmed emotionally this week. I'm reading the book "Life After Birth" by Kate Figes which is great, but is giving me lots to think about. It is a 'warts and all' account of how radically life changes when you become a mother.

So on Sat I was at a friend's wonderful, joyous big 30th birthday party and I just started crying. I was so happy to be with my wonderful friends, yet suddenly had this overwhelming feeling of 'gosh, life will never be the same again'. I had to find my partner and have a sneaky weep in the corner.

I was trying to explain to him how I'm really excited and pleased, but its as if you won the lotto and never had to work again. Initially you'd think "WooooHooooo!" but then you'd probably have to re-think your whole life and priorities.

I do highly recommend the book, though: www.amazon.co.uk/Life-After-Birth-Kate-Figes/dp/0140252630

Is anyone else reading anything useful? Interesting? Scary?

Larty74 · 22/11/2010 21:50

Tales from a Midwife by Jennifer Worth Stories from life in the East End in the 1950s.

Very interesting, not scary. so well written-feels like you are there. Can't wait to go to bed at night to read next chapter!

thanks for the suggestion pip always looking for the next read.

KPidgeon · 23/11/2010 10:26

PipPipPip definitely getting that feeling from time to time.

Also worrying about how I'm going to look after this tiny dependent creature- how to get the temperature right in our dodgy flat at night so it's not too cold and not too hot..

Will I ever sleep or will I just sit there vigilant watching to make sure he's breathing!?

Argghh! Any mums on here who have little ones already- how did you find it all? Did it just come naturally or were you nervous wrecks to start with?!

K

jeffily · 23/11/2010 13:23

Hi all

Good to hear that we are all going through the same sort of worries and thoughts as the final trimester approaches! I am starting to seriously wonder how I am going to juggle my DD, who is being rather demanding of me at the moment (eg wants a hundred stories before bedtime, despite being BLW and never being spoon fed before, suddenly wants to sit on my lap and be fed by me at tea time, wants to be carried everywhere despite being a good walker and v independent... Confused) and a brand new baby. I guess it is perfectly normal to be thinking about it though, it is such a big change ahead of us.

I don't remembering feeling particularly worried before DD was born, but as the eldest of a big family I thought I knew it all.Blush How wrong I was! I think I was a nervous wreck at first Kpidgeon, but I did relax into it after a while. I wish I had trusted my instincts more and not worried about doing everything 'right'. "Right' is what suits you, your baby and your family; it is not in any books (I bloody wish I had never, ever even touched the Baby Whisperer!) and it is not necessarily the way that suits your mum/aunt/neighbour etc. All your baby really needs is to be loved and cared for, and you will be able to do that naturally. It is easy to get too worried about the rooms being too hot/cold etc, but babies have been born into caves in the middle of winter and survived- and March is a nice time for our LO's to be due as it is spring and hopefully won't be too long till we get some nice spring weather!

Well, should be planning for school at the mo and am procastinating, so must get on. Envy of larty and your 3 weeks left!

StrangewaysHereICome · 23/11/2010 16:59

Eeek final trimester - already, oh help!! I am feeling rather unprepared tbh Confused.

I agree with jeffily trusting your instincts is the best way forward and not to worry about what you 'should' and 'should not' be doing. Don't get bogged down with the books - some of the advice can be useful but trusting your instincts is best. MN probably gives the best advice. I am hoping it all comes back to me - after having two really close together a 4 year gap seems quite daunting Wink.

I am feeling a bit grumpy atm, I have yet another cold and am finding it hard to sleep. I have a horrid feeling my spd is coming back. I only had it mildly with dd2 but already the front of my pubic bone is sore and getting in and out of the car, bed and the bath is painful. Will this just get worse? It hurts rolling over in bed too. Any pearls of wisdom would be most appreciated. 14 weeks to go still feels a long time in some ways but not long in others Confused.

On the plus side I have nearly finished the Christmas shopping, I don't know what has come over me. I am Shock at my own efficiency - most unlike me indeed!!

Jenchandler · 23/11/2010 18:21

Hi everyone!
Please can I join the thread?! Am new to mumsnet. My due date is 18th march, am super excited its our first.
Its been pretty stressful so far, my Dad lives in america and had a massive heart attack about 6 weeks ago so lots of long haul flights and stress etc...Anyway, he's much better now and the baby is moving all the time. So finally starting to relax and enjoy the whole experience.
I'm getting nervous about the birth too - trying not to think about it too much!

Larty74 · 23/11/2010 19:57

Final trimester sounds SO wierd. Shock

1Catherine1 · 23/11/2010 21:20

Welcome to the thread Jenchandler.

As for Final trimester all I can say is FINALLY!!! I'm bored of this whole pregnancy thing now. I was never a patient child unfortunately this has only gotten worse in adulthood. I have quite the distinctive bump at the moment and am already finding the extra weight uncomfortable. I move around quite quickly usually and today after walking up a flight of stairs I felt unusually tired.

Strangeways I feel your pain with the cold. I've been ill since Friday when I guiltily took the day off, felt better on Saturday and then was hit with a second round of it on Monday. Now I feel terrible again. To make it worse I'm so stressed at the moment because my cat had to be admitted into the emergency vets on Sunday and then transferred to my normal vets Sunday night and now Tuesday night they still have her because she is that sick at the moment. Just what I need right before Christmas when I have a baby on the way early next year!

StrangewaysHereICome · 23/11/2010 21:43

Oh Catherine I am sorry to hear about your cat - I hope she is better soon. Such a worry - do they know what is wrong? Hope you are better soon too because this cold is the pits. I daren't go to bed in case I have a night as bad as last night. I'll be brave and go in a minute and hope that I can muster 8 hours blissful sleep!

sam26oscar · 23/11/2010 21:47

Hi all,
just chuckling to myself reading thru the posts, we are a load of old whingers really aren't we!!!! Its greatGrin

pregnancy is probably the only time we can realistically get away with it too!!We weren't happy at the beginning cos of sickness, nausea and tiredness and now we have big cumbersome bumps, breathlessness and heartburn he he he!!

Like you said Jeffily final trimester is approaching!! Can't wait to be on this thread til the end, although i will be abandoning you end of Feb because of ELCS, but i will be here til then reading everyones news, its been a fab journey so farSmile xx

Larty74 · 23/11/2010 21:59

I'm going to have a whinge as I've been feeling thoroughly nauseous all day today (ironically for the 1st time EVER this whole pregnancy). Then i remembered when a parent dropped their kid off today saying they had a bad tummy all weekend but was fine now, however the child complained all through lunch it was hurting him. Thanks for nothing! Won't be missing that I must say.

Catherine so sorry to hear about your cat and not feeling well. Hope you both are on the mend soon. and Strangeways and anyone else...

What's this about SNOW????? I'd be shocked if they got it right, but it is awfully cold out there.....

1Catherine1 · 24/11/2010 00:05

My cat has a post-op infection. She had an op a month ago to investigate the possibility of cancer and it came back all clear. Ironically being overly cautious with her health has made her poorly. The infection was quite severe even though I was told that we'd caught it early. She been on antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication, morphine and a drip because she'd stopped eating. I'm not looking forward to the bill :( Vet told me I might be able to bring her home tomorrow for "a few days", so obviously we're not out of the woods yet. It will depend how she is tomorrow morning.

Idk where you are Larty but the snow is forecast to hit here on Saturday but nothing drastic. I really hate the snow since I'm petrified of driving in it. My little Ford KA doesn't do the snow very well and I have crashed twice due to ice in the road - fortunately both times I was travelling less than 10 mph and nothing but my car was left damaged. I read it will be worst in the North and East so if that covers you I will just say drive carefully.

Anyway... its 5 past midnight, maybe I should go to bed... nighty night all!

sam26oscar · 24/11/2010 09:38

Oooh i love snow Grin i'm a big kid when it comes to the white stuff!!! I also get v.v cross if the weather men say we are going to get it but it misses us Blush.
We live in somerest so its not normal for us to have too much but at the beginning of this year we had loads, so am ever optimistic we will get some this winter again!! 1Catherine1 really hope all goes well with your cat
Am planning on seeing m/w at the sure start clinic tomorrow as have started yesterday to get pains in tummy again, but do remember sitting down on Monday and feeling me pull a muscle, but also want to check out in case of UTI..again. Lets hope i get a different one this time as other one completely missed itAngryHope you alll have good days Wink xx

Jenchandler · 24/11/2010 10:28

I love snow too, am hoping it comes on Friday as I have a day off...Yippee! I live in London though and will be surprised if we get some here.
Really want to finish my Christmas shopping too, I have a HUGE family and it takes me weeks to shop for everyone. Especially now I am pregnant, my lower back hurts and it takes me ages to get around a few shops! Whinge over!

Good luck at the midwife sam26oscar and have a good day everyone!

Muser · 24/11/2010 10:52

1Catherine I hope your cat is better soon, it's so worrying when they're ill.

sam good luck at the midwives, hope it goes well.

I have been making more purchases. I've bought a trial kit of washable nappies, using the voucher my local council provides. Anyone else going to try reusables? They look pretty easy to use so I'm hoping for the best.

OP posts:
Oceanbreeze · 24/11/2010 11:06

Welcome Jenchandler. Another first timer due on the 18th! Sorry to hear about your dad, glad he's feeling better.

Sorry about your cold & spd Strangeways. Also feel your pain about the cold. Mines almost gone now - but it was a mean one. Hardly got any sleep at all. Do you mind me asking what spd feels like?

1Catherine hope your cat is better soon and you're able to bring her home. And sorry you've been feeling rubbish too Larty74.

Personally I want to cancel any weekend snow. Normally I would like it, but had planned going away for the w/e, so just really bad timing for me Angry

Also going to try reuseables, but probably do the first few weeks in disposables til I get the hang of things Wink I've got my council voucher thingy all lined up, but haven't bought any yet. Which ones did you go for Muser?

Good luck today Sam

Muser · 24/11/2010 12:00

I went to The Nappy Lady for advice Oceanbreeze. She recommended Bambinex Teddys because they're very fast drying and we don't have much drying space. I'm going to try them out. I've also heard very good things about Motherease.

OP posts:
superpenguin · 24/11/2010 12:17

Oooh I am also planning on trying reusable / washable nappies. No vouchers available from my local council though unfortunately!
Are bambinex not the bamboo ones muser? As I thought bamboo was notoriously slow drying, but maybe I am getting confused! Confused There are so many different sorts to choose from.

As for snow, I too am petrified of it at if there is any possibility I have to go anywhere (which of course I do, being at work 5 days a week). I also crashed my car on the ice the winter before last (no other vehicles involved, no injuries but car a write-off) and the thought of driving on ice terrifies me, especially as I have a very impractical rear-wheel-drive sports car which is not good on slippery roads (it's fantastic at other times mind!).
Luckily as I am in east anglia we don't get too much snow here.

Oh and I have also read one of Jennifer Worth's books about being a midwife in the 1950s and can recommend!

Scary and also exciting that we are fast approaching the final trimester!
I had my 24-week check-up yesterday (although I am 25+5) and heard the heartbeat again, which was wonderful.
She also said we should be feeling around 10 movements per day at 24 to 28 weeks.
I don't think I am feeling anywhere near that many but am at least feeling something every day now.

KPidgeon · 24/11/2010 12:28

Re. reusables Muser and SuperPenguin I've already stocked up on Bamboozle Tots Bots- enough for newborn and toddler- so I hope it works- was definitely maybe a bit impetuous to pay it all out now but I got some good deals on ebay and they are basically brand new still- do check out ebay. I got the overall lot for half what I would have paid from the normal supplier.

They look lovely- the size 1 are all white and the size 2 are lovely bright colours. Here's hoping it will work out!

I think they are bamboo but I've got enough to last me (I hope) and resigning myself to being a constant washerwoman for the forseeable future once baby arrives. Have also got a back up of disposables that I hope not to use but are there for peace of mind!

Hope everyone keeps warm and the snow holds off. We're off to Wales tomorrow for a few days to visit my folks. And to see the crib that mum's been getting ready for us- so exciting!
