Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
NowPanicAndFreakOut · 16/11/2010 19:27

Hi all. Been in Italy for last two weeks for a wonderful, wonderful holiday with DH who's now flown back to middle of nowhere until Christmas Sad. Am so happy he got to feel kicks - somehow makes it all the more real (esp as he's missed last two scans).

I've done my best to read up on last TEN pages of posts but now can't remember who said what!

Congrats on all the great scan news. I'm now 24+3 and feeling kicks much of the time when I'm not walking. Am I being a bad mum already to find it very creepy to see my belly change shape?!?!

Enjoyed the buggy debate - decided (based on approx ten seconds in John Lewis before I got scared!) that the MacLaren Techno XLR looked perfect for no reason other than it's handles were set on high and one thing I can't cope with is having to bend to push my niece and nephews (my SIL is five inches shorter than me so they are v low). As DH is nine inches taller than me it's going to have to be flexible for us both to use... Also want to be able to throw in and out of car, to only have to buy one and not replace in six months, get up the three large steps to our flat, fold away, etc. DH wants to get a sling / whatever they are called Blush - any recommendations v welcome (with a big man in mind - can't see it being my kind of thing tbh)

God I feel like a novice at all of the "stuff" side of things - does anyone know of a good list of genuine "must haves" to buy pre-birth? So far I have one bib!!!!!

Jupiter118 · 16/11/2010 23:13

Muser - love the list - v funny.

More good scan and kicks etc news. Baby Jupiter is becoming more active by the day.

Nowpanic - my must haves (excluding obvious bed, buggy, car seat, clothes etc) following experience with DS 1:

Not too many sheets/blankets - move into Grobags as soon as you can (sw between 8-10 weeks I vaguely remember) sooo much easier.

Bottles, steriliser, formula. I was adament I would BF, but had uncooperative child who ended up admitted to neonatal unit to be fed via a tube as too lazy to BF properly (whole other story). Upshot had no clue or equipment for bottle feeding. Would have limited supplies just in case say couple bottles, steriliser and a couple of cartons of pre-mixed formula. Will be prepared this time!!!

Disposable pants/mat towels - more than you think you will need. I became quite attached to sitting on the cushioned big towels.

A sling - I wore the baby bjorn we had borrowed lots - especially in the house - DS liked it and I had two hands.

A changing bag you like/suits lifestyle - you will take it everywhere. I used mine (now knackered) lots until DS potty trained.

Muslin cloths - very useful.

Changing mat - essential. we had a cot top changer thing, but too scary to use once they can move (which could be rolling in as little as 3/4 months).

Bouncy chair - invaluable while you shower, cook, put washing on etc.

Cagoule (sorry can't spell) or coat with hood - impossible to hold umbrella and push a pushchair

Brain too fuzzy to remember any more now.

Ohhh - car seat - had one before where you had to strap it in every time bit of a faff (or might be be malcoordinated). Thinking of getting a new one (health in preg grant money) with a base that you just clunk in.

x

NowPanicAndFreakOut · 16/11/2010 23:54

Wow, thanks so much Jupiter - that's an amazing - if slightly daunting list!

XXX

Muser · 17/11/2010 09:04

Just to be contrary, I have been advised that if I'm really determined about breast feeding I shouldn't buy formula and equipment in. Theory being if it's there you're more likely to turn to it. But that was advised because I live somewhere with 24 hour supermarkets, so there's always going to be somewhere to get formula. I'm a bit agnostic on the subject. And if you're planning on expressing than the bottles are going to be used anyway.

OP posts:
mixedmamameansbusiness · 17/11/2010 09:27

I really want to be more sucessful with BF this time so I am not buying bottles or anything - however I live very close to a number of supermarkets and know I can get there. My SIL still has my microwave striliser so might get that in. I do plan on expressing a some point but I think I need to get established first. I am going to be attedning every breastfeeding drop in available and utilise the peer support system here to really try to do better this time.

In terms of what I am buyign this time:

Cot
Pushchair
Sling
Buggy Board (for DS2)
Sleep suits
Vests (plenty of both of the above)
Muslins
Some nice comfy stretchy easy clothes for baby - absolutely no jeans etc which I had loads of before, they looked slightly ridiculous.

Bath rest as I will use the big bath from the beginning.
Need some shets too.

Fairly certain I dont need much else.

Well names have become a serious conversation now we know we are having a little monkey boy. DH downloaded an Islamic names app on his iPhone. So far only consensus is:

Amir / Emir

I insist on the second as that is the Turkish version and I like it better but DS2 has a name beginning with E so would be better not to have the same intial, need to tet on my mum to make sure she can say it. The other two boys have FIL and my dads name as their middle names and we are probably going for DH name this time although it is very long and in two parts so we are goingto just go for the first partprobably.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 17/11/2010 09:28

Also, just thought I would put this out there. Do any London nd surrounding areas mums and mums tobe fancy a meet up?

Oceanbreeze · 17/11/2010 09:34

I've read that too Muser As a first timer it doesn't really fill me with confidence, that people think you will give up BF at the earliest opportunity if you have a coupla bottles in the cupboard. Also read conflicting info on mixing BF with expressing too Confused

And don't even get me started on nappies Grin

And thanks for the list Jupiter everytime I see a list, there is always something new on it that I hadn't thought of in this case, a cagoule.

Muser · 17/11/2010 09:42

mixedmama we all accidentally got the same initial in my family. It honestly never caused us any problems. We always knew who the post was for just by looking at the envelopes.

Hi girls,

Just popping back in to say hello and it's so good to hear about so many good scans (even if I am really Envy and Sad).

I'm going to the GP this morning to discuss returning to work, phased hopefully, as I think I might be able to manage it now. I'm scared of doctors though and feel really pukey right now because I'm so nervous.

Next week we finally have our consultant appointment to go over my blood tests, placenta tests and Bobbie's skin swab results to see if we can learn anything about what went wrong.

And AF has arrived so finger crossed we are back on the ttc bus again. Wish me luck, I shall be a bag of nerves!

Medee · 17/11/2010 11:41

Hi spilt, lovely of you to drop in and say hello. I really hope you get some answers from your consultant, so the journey on the TTC bus isn't too scary.

jeffily · 17/11/2010 11:51

Hi Spilt, so lovely to hear from you! You sound like you are doing well, pleased that you have had this time off work. I did find that things started to get easier for me after we lost our first at 22 wks once I got back to work and life settled back into a routine again. Hope that TTC is not too worrying a time for you. xxx

Not much to report here. I have a day to myself and having got into a right old state talking to DH about timing for ML last night am taking it easy, watching TV and knitting! Have decided to try to go upto 18th Nov, even though baby is due 3rd March. Statistics I could find seem to say that after 1 prem birth you have a 15% chance of another, which is not too bad and doesn't seem worth losing out on a week's pay for, especially when £ is going to be so tight this time round. Am still abit concerned, but have decided to just be uber organised this time so am sorting through baby clothes today and washing stuff/packing hospital bag etc. Sure that it is not needed, but really need the security of knowing that it is at least on the way to organised. If I don't use any of it for 16 weeks, so much the better!

BTW, talking of names, we have Stanley Arthur for a boy and Esme Hope for a girl. But of course, they might be born and suit neither so we'll be back to the drawing board!

Muser · 17/11/2010 11:59

Really good to hear from you spilt. I also hope you get some answers from the test. Good luck with TTC again, I hope it happens quickly and you have 40 weeks where everything is textbook dull.

Oceanbreeze · 17/11/2010 12:06

Great to hear from you spilt Hope all goes well at the docs & with the consultant, and your time on the TTC bus is short.

1Catherine1 · 17/11/2010 12:36

Hi Spilt, good to hear from you. Strangely enough I was thinking about you yesterday. I was wondering if you were feeling up to checking in on us yet. Good luck with the consultant and ttc.

I am having a bit of a stressful day - got a big decisions to make which I really don't want to make. I was hoping to not have to make it but it seems my choice is my cats or financial security. Thanks to this I have a constant migraine that won't ease with paracetamol. Sad

spilttheteaagain · 17/11/2010 13:25

jeffily 18th Nov is tomorrow, surely that's not what you meant?!

Doc visit went really well. After 3.5 years I have found the holy grail: sensitive, kind GP who doesn't dismiss you and act like you are wasting his Very Important Time. He was lovely and I have made a note of his name Grin

Thanks all for your good wishes.

I also saw my MW at the surgery when she went past the waiting room and suddenly I remembered today was the day I was due to have my 25 week check. Should be 25+5 now Sad

Larty74 · 17/11/2010 14:07

so nice to hear from you spilt thanks for updating us all. best wishes with everything and take care of yourself!

am988 · 17/11/2010 15:54

Hello All,

How are you? Haven't been here for ages - just work very very busy...I'm counting the days until first christmas, and then maternity leave.

It is great to follow the thread with all the sometimes very fun to read messages!

I'm struggling to find warm maternity clothes, I'm from the sunny mediterranean, so I need warm clothes! .. Can anyone please suggest where i can get a winter coat - which is padded/quilted. I'm using the one I had (non maternity - Zara) but it is only holding on one button on top of my stomach - in a week it won't fit me anymore and then I will freeze to death!..Shock

Thanks for any suggestions!
XX A

Oceanbreeze · 17/11/2010 16:27

am988 not sure about quilted, but I know a couple of us got coats from New Look. Also just discovered that Dorothy Perkins has a quite large mat selection (online at least). Both very reasonable priced, and DP has a sale on atm too.

EvianBaby · 17/11/2010 16:49

Spilt so so lovely to hear from you. I think of you often, and, like the others have said, find the TTC part easy and wish you a very straightforward pregnancy next time, you really do deserve it. I hope things are getting a bit easier for you now, i'm sure you will never forget any of this but in time you will find it easier to think about. Sending lots of love anyway. Please do keep popping back if you feel that you can, it really is nice to know how you are getting on x

me23 · 17/11/2010 18:35

it is very nice to hear from you spilt, I'm pleased you have found a nice gp it really does make a difference. Good luck with ttc and with your hospital appt.

I have 6 weeks until my next mw appt on 30th dec will be 28 weeks had last appt at 15 weeks.

chickiewoo · 17/11/2010 19:07

spilt - so good to hear from you - have been thinking about you and hoping you were ok. Lots of luck with ttc - will say a little prayer for you. Sending you lots of love - keep in touch if you feel able to. Take care x

PipPipPip · 17/11/2010 20:47

Spilt, good to hear from you - I also often think about you. Good luck TTC and I hope you get lots of support from Mumsnetters, either us or a new lot.

1Catherine1 I'm sorry about your difficult choice and your migraine. I did some research about taking codeine (normally sold as co-codamol in the UK) and decided it was fine to take a small amount occasionally to relieve a migraine. I didn't discuss it with my doctor but I did have a big talk with my pharmacist about it then googled the hell out of it.

There are warnings about taking it, but they're not really related to pregnancy - they're general warnings about the potential addictiveness of it. So I wouldn't take it for more than 48 hours.

Anyway, feel free to ignore me and do your own research - just that it helped me :)

Hope the rest of you are going well x

Maitri · 17/11/2010 21:24

Spilt, so lovely to hear from you again. If it's any consolation, I was in a similar position to you earlier this year and the gruesome devastation was quickly followed by some good news - it took us three months. Wishing you all the very best - keep us updated as we think of you often. M x

jammiedodger2 · 17/11/2010 21:45

Hi Ladies
Spilt, good to hear you are getting some support in the real world, hope ttc goes to plan.

Have had fairly mixed week, was planning lots of rest on saturday as dh was not working (last saturday off before christmas, here come the 60 hour weeks Hmm ) but he woke me up early hours with v bad abdo pain. Donned nurses head and established he wasn't about to rupture something, then the expulsion from both ends ensued! So he spent the weekend in bed.
Very grateful for two fab friends (newlyweds without dc) who picked my dc up and took them out for the day on sunday as I literally on my knees.
Dh has now been to Dr as pain not settling, prob a bug but no-one else has got it and there's always that nagging pessimist at the back of my nurses head. Luckily gp taken him seriously and has him back in next week to check if it's improved and send him for tests if not.
DM arrives next saturday for a week and I have very mixed feelings. She is normally 3.5 hours away and has managed to visit once this year so far. Visits dsis (who I adore) every month as she is 'only 2 hrs away' (plus 45 min on ferry)' Hmm
Part of me glad she isn't at mine every month part not. If she is on good form she will be lots of fun and hugely supportive and helpful. More often I get critical ( disapproves of my lifestyle) and 'comes to me for a rest' because my life is so sorted and perfect so sits in one place the whole week.
DC will be thrilled she is coming but haven't told them yet because last time she cancelled at the last minute because she was exhausted after staying with dsis to give her a hand. DC were v. dissapointed Sad
But on an upside have finally booked ML, am planning on taking it from 39 weeks (mid march) Shock but with just over 2 weeks A/L before. Have realised only have just over 3 months to get my caseload ship shape! V. nice feeling given current climate in overstretched NHS.
Sorry for log post, safe place to 'dump' here.
jx

sam26oscar · 18/11/2010 09:31

split
Good to hear from you.So glad you have seen a lovely G.P, definetly take his/her name and request them each visit Wink
After we lost our firstborn it took less than 3 months ttc and within the year of losing it we had a newborn to hold and help us move on. The first 20 odd weeks were terribly tense but that would be what you would expect, really hope i am not frightening or upsetting you but wanted to offer my thoughts and what it was like for me. As it was i had a text book pregnancy resulting in a little handful Grin
All the best and lots of love xx
