Larty74 · 13/11/2010 21:55

Is it just me or is there NOTHING on tv these days, especially tonight!

jeffily · 13/11/2010 21:58

Oh I know- why is Saturday night TV so dreadful! All I want is a decent series or something to curl up and watch before bed... I've even exhausted 4OD and iPlayer

1Catherine1 · 13/11/2010 22:00

There's nothing on TV every night. I pay over £50 a month for my TV subscription to sit on here because there's never anything else to do. Although I am currently patiently waiting for an item on e-bay to finish. So far no bids and 4 minutes left. :) BARGAIN!!

Larty74 · 14/11/2010 09:15

ha ha. same here Catherine and jeffily ebay/internet has been far more entertaining than the tv. haven't bid on anything yet, but picked up a high chair in mint condition for £15 at my village auction today! love a good bargain.

me23 · 14/11/2010 14:02

I don't know if you lot have been watching the "Thorne" series on sky 1 it's on tonight the last installment of the latest 3 parter very good. The last 3 parter starts next week.
I have been taking antibiotics for urine infection since thursday but I feel worse, literally last night I needed the loo all night, plus dull ache in abdomen.
Maybe I'm not on the right antibiotics the gp has sent sample off so will find out next week.
Last night I felt some much stronger kicks and for the first time me and dp could see the kicks from the outside Smile

Scan tomorrow at 4 me and dp cannot wait! neither can dd she wants to know whether she is having a brother or sister. I really hope scan goes well.

sam26oscar · 14/11/2010 16:27

me23 good luck for your scan tomorrow.
I find Saturday night t.v ok until about 9ish after Casualty!! Then i struggle. I really love Criminal minds on Living but they're all repeats and i've seen them Sad does anyone else like this and do you know when new series starting???

Bump is MEGA moving this weekend.(sorry to those whose babies not helping their mummies relax and feel them move Smile ) it looks really funny to see belly twitching, it also makes me jump when not expecting it!!

I went to my BF baby shower yesterday , she is due beg of December so will have some maternity leave together!

Just wondering on other peoples views on baby showers???
I can understand it if you work in a big office/dept before you go on maternity leave, but its not for me.

i think i was the only person to turn up without a gift, doesn't bother me as i had already explained to BF i want to give gift when baby born, as is traditional and also i am very supertitious, but i suspect i may have received a few looks from others!! I have skin like a rhino though Grin Grin

gem3225 · 14/11/2010 17:32

hi everyone, not been on for a while. Lovely to hear all the positive news on the scans and movements.

im 23 +4 and ive been feeling movements in the morning and evening mostly, still quite faint.midwife measured my bump and said i was 25 weeks!.

Had the shock of my life today, been weighing myself every 2 weeks and been happy with 1 lb gain a week..until today and ive put on 4 lbs since last week. A whole stone in weight now.......is this normal????

Buggie wise, im so confused.Thought i had it sorted with the cosatto Cabi, but i need the carrycot to have a handle so i can carry it up stairs, not many seem to have this, and alot only fold down once you have removed the seat. it gave me a headache today...

enjoy the last of the weekend.

1Catherine1 · 14/11/2010 17:36

I see baby showers as something that is very American and not something we indulge in much over here. I won't be having one and just appreciate the help anyone wishes to give me. My BF had a baby in July and I sent a gift the week he was born but it was not a massive gift just a little keep sake.

So far I'm only expecting gifts from my sister who has told me she has put money aside for the baby already and wants to help out. I'm hoping when she is ready for a baby (she's 5 years younger than me and just come out of her first long term relationship so it'll be a while) I will be able to help her out even more by passing on anything I no longer need. Since my little girl is the first baby to be born into my family for 19 years I am struggling financially to pay for everything a baby needs (gotta love e-bay) but I still don't think it warrants a baby shower. I think this is probably just my view but I was brought up not to be "stuff" orientated and even taught that Halloween is just an excuse for "commercialised begging". To me a baby shower just falls into the same category. Any help is gratefully received but I won't be asking for it nor expecting it.

Medee · 14/11/2010 18:18

update on the bras conversation (it was here, wasn't it?): John Lewis don't require you to strip completely, and the lady there did an in an out of the changing room while I tried them on - seriously, I don't give a fuck, you've seen more boobs than I have. Anyway, she wouldn't sell me wireds, so I do have a couple of non-wireds which were actually OK.

I've never been invited to a baby shower, but I don't even buy the gift till the baby has arrived, let alone give it, out of outmoded superstition.

jeffily · 14/11/2010 18:45

I agree with Catherine on the babyshower thing. I didn't have one for DD and am not planning one this time- I'd be so embarrassed if anyone organised one too! It's so easy to end up spending a lot of money and amassing a huge amount of stuff with a baby and I honestly found the first time round that my babasling and the moses basket were all I really needed, plus some little clothes of course! The most appreciated gifts when she was born were those of time and food- and that is what I have offered to all of my friends since experiencing the craziness of the babymoon. A hamper of goodies and a few home cooked meals that can be put in the freezer. The baby doesn't even know what is going on, let alone appreciate any of the gifts! (but then I am a bit of an old meanie about sentimental stuff and got rid of any disney related items almost immediately as I cannot bear them Blush)

DD is calling me from the bath (she's in with DH not alone!) so gotta dash. Love to all

Larty74 · 14/11/2010 20:44

Being from America, I can confirm that showers in general are indeed very much an American thing. Having been here as long as I have, and the more I go back and forth, I become more and more amused by some things that are (for lack of a better term) the "American Way" and felt this way when a baby shower was given in my honour just a couple of weeks ago. Also, I hate being the focus of attention.

To put it simply, it's typically just another good reason to have a party, but I left in complete awe of the fact that people would want to do this for you, incredibly humbled by their generosity, and so very grateful for the amazing and useful gifts. (and I'm not the most emotive person in the world - even when pregnant!)

Anyway, spent the whole day with DH's family which include 5 grandsons. interesting insight seeing as we're bearing the 6th! I'm exhausted. g'night ladies and take care!

sam26oscar · 14/11/2010 21:29

Crikey Larty74 your DH family sounds like mine!! DH has 8 nephews, our DS and if this one is a boy that will be 10 boys from 3 siblings Shock anymore and we'll have a football team!! DH mum passed away last year at the young age of 50, she already had 7 grandsons by then!!( She started having kids very young Wink But she said she'd send me a daughter when she died so i'm eagerly anticipating the arrival of this one!!!! It would make picking a name easier if it is a girl!!

Jupiter118 · 14/11/2010 21:36

Sam - wow 7 grandsons - would be lovely story if you have a girl.
I can't remember if you found out (scatty)

God tv is awful - garrows law was about the only thing I thought I would want to watch this week and not remotely holding my interest.
Watched xfactor and strictly, but that's been about it.

And detest celebrity jungle thing. Might have to watch west wing dvds (again).

x

sam26oscar · 14/11/2010 21:56

Jupiter i am watching psychic sally on living Blush well got to have a slight interest in the paranormal especially if MIL was right and sent me a daughter!!!!! No haven't found out!

Larty74 · 14/11/2010 22:20

wow sam! I commend you for not finding out the sex at your scan! I cannot even begin to imagine your levels of anticipation, and cannot wait myself to find out. Smile

Isn't that weird that before we know it we will be reporting such information?? jumping a bit far ahead, but couldn't help but think that.

Muser · 14/11/2010 22:50

My family is also all boys at the moment. Only 4 of them, but all under 5 (and 2 under 6 months!). We didn't find out either so it'll be exciting to see if this one bucks the trend or not.

On babyshowers, I am a bit superstitious about giving stuff before the baby is born as well. I also think because there's a tradition of gifts after the birth here, doing both can seem a bit like trying to get gifts twice. Although I'm sure that's not true. I just couldn't imagine not turning up to a new baby with a gift, even if I'd already given something.

If someone threw me one I would be delighted, because it would be a very sweet and unexpected thing to do. But on the whole, I'd rather not import this US tradition.

OP posts:
Lozario · 15/11/2010 08:55

We've got 6 boys in our family too - still no great-granddaughter for my grandma!! Because of that though, I do find it a bit irritating that everyone we know seems to assume that we therefore want a girl, do you know what I mean? I genuinely don't mind either way.

I don't think I'll get a baby shower this time - had one for DS1 (it was fab) and that was less than 2 years ago so we pretty much have everything we need. (Unless it's a girl!! But we're not finding out!)

Good luck me23 today! Our turn on Friday!

mixedmamameansbusiness · 15/11/2010 10:40

I like the idea of baby showers and have thrown one for my BF and one for my SIL. The idea for us was a get together rather than a present giving. Altough we did allclub together and put together a basket of bits for mum and baby for hospital - breast pads, maternity pads that kind of thing and with SIL i think we did one for dad too with a camera, lucozade sweets etc.

My friends did throw me a small one with DS2 and they just bought me some mum to be pamper stuff - it was about me rather than baby if you see what I mean.

I think it is harmless, certainly wouldnt want people turning up with massive gifts or anything.

We have just been googling boys names again today - we are decided a girl will def be Ayla (the English pronounciation of Isla)as this is the girls name we had from the moment of concieving DS1. Boys names we cannot agree on. Both our DSs names are Turkish/Islamicish but later on can be shortened to very common English names should they want to so have just come across Benyamin which would fit really nicely or Timur which again can be shortened to Tim later if they want. Other names I have just come across and am about to text DH:

Rauf
Adem
Harun
Mika
Mikail
Na'il

Trouble is it needs to fit a South Asian set of in laws, Turkish family and because we spend a lot of time there and my mum who has trouble pronouncing anything too difficult in another language (she still calls me something different to my actual name as she cannot pronounce).

Oceanbreeze · 15/11/2010 11:46

Wow. Not managed to get here for a while -- soo much to catch up on. Congratulations to all those who have had scans, and welcome to all the newbies Smile

Had my scan last week.
All ok which is the most important thing of course, but junior would not to cooperate, and stubbornly refused to flash us the whole time, so we don't know what flavour [s]he is, even though we had decided we would find out. I'm guessing that won't be the last time [s]he scuppers our plans Grin

Had a horrendous cold last week, which really knocked me out - just the remains of a really attractive sniffley nose now.

Finally started to feel movements at the beginning of last week - and after a week of frustration, OH can now feel them too.

Purplefan, sorry you've had such hassle at work - hope it has all sorted itself out now.

Superpenguin so glad you had good news at your scan.

Regarding prams/pushchairs etc. We have a couple of criteria forward & rear facing, suitable from birth, bar to push rather than 2 handles etc, not likely to bankrupt us completely, and had more or less decided on the Mamas & Papas Sola but am now wobbling, as have had read so many really really bad things about M&P recently, that we are seriously considering looking all over again. Anyone else have any M&P experience?

And on the subject of names - we are still completely clueless - part of the reason we were so keen to find out the sex, so we'd only have to choose one!

Oh and on the subject of tall March daddies - you can add my OH to the list too -- hadn't even considered the effect that might have til I read the thread. Ouch.

Dramamama · 15/11/2010 11:54

Hi all mind if i join in? i'm due 9/3/11 pg#3 (BABY GIRL) DS now 4 + 1 angel baby

Dramamama · 15/11/2010 11:58

Ooo and re: the pram debate we had also pretty much settled on the sola but i keep seeing others i like (the oyster, icandy cherry etc..)hadn't heard anything untoward about m&p what was said of them? was it just gesneral bad customer service or worse?

me23 · 15/11/2010 12:05

My side of the family only seem to produce girls for the last 30 years including myself with dd so I do have a feeling this baby is also a girl.
As for baby showers to me they are just an American tradition myself or anyone I know has not had one.
Mixed I like the names you have shortlisted Actually Isla is at the top of our names for a girl my familyare Irish and dd has an Irish name too so it would fit well.
Boys names
Ethan
Dylan
Joshua
Oliver
NathAn

I have more but can't remember them at the moment.
4 hours till scan I feel sick think it's a Combination of nerves and these antibiotics!

Oceanbreeze · 15/11/2010 12:18

Welcome Dramamama this thread has put me off most recently, but its not the only one I've seen.

Good luck for later me23

Medee · 15/11/2010 12:41

We're down to Quinny Buzz v M+P Mylo. Not made our final decision yet.

Dramamama · 15/11/2010 15:22

Oooo Oceanbreeze that's not good is it? i ordered everything through m&p when pg with my DS and had no probs at all! but that was in 2006 maybe standards have slipped? Hmm
Medee i had a Quinny buzz and loved it i used it right up till DS was too big for it anymore.
If you haven't guessed already i'm a bit of a buggy tart, i like to try them all! lol thank god for e-bay!
