Hi Scottish mummy - Welcome. There are a few Londoners here who may be able to help. Have a look at the Nov stats list, think locations are on there, you might spot some others in N.London area

BoB - Hope everything goes well for your DP. Fingers crossed. It's okay to get excited at Asda btw

Enthusia - Awww...poor you! Go and put your feet up and watch a good movie or do something relaxing. I find it best when i have those kind of days otherwise you just get into a fluster. That's just my opinion though.

No backache yet. Hope it stays away a while.

Enthusia · 15/09/2005 14:34

Ok, feel I can face the world again now, had lunch spoke to DH and did a little tidying!

Welcome ScottishMummy

BoB sending lots of good luck to your Dp, My Dh recently went for a better job and got it and is loving it so all is rosy, so hopefully this will be the same for you.

babyonboard · 15/09/2005 14:51

He he..forgot to say..I was watching 'city hospital' this morning and felt so sorry for the poor women on the antenatal ward..one had spd, and one had mild pre eclampsia..and to make matters 1000 times worse they had ainsley harriot at their bedside, gurning and asking moronic questions..teeehee..poor ladies!

novadandypowder · 15/09/2005 16:08

Have spent the afternoon sleeping on the futon in the study avoiding the cleaner and looking after the kitten. Soooooooooooooooo tired today have absolutely no get up and go but have to go and meet a friend in town for dinner at 6 . I can't put her off as our relationship has gone a bit funny since I told her I was pg and she really wants to sort it out. Maybe a trip to pizza express will perk me up a bit...

Welcome scottishmummy - N10 is that turnpike lane/manor house type way? If so I used to live on the ladder off green lanes. We have a lunch arranged in Angel on 30th sept if you're able to make it.

Enthusia, sounds like the trip to the dentist was quite positive, you can't beat the feeling of really clean teeth.

Bob, my dentist has a TV in the room and last time I went there was a programme all about chocolate on and I kept drooling

JenJam · 15/09/2005 17:15

This might be too boring to respond to...but please try if you can muster the energy...cot or cot-bed? and know where i can get a nice 'minimalist' one (not too ornate) preferably white, painted wood

i'm at work counting down the minutes - have finally given up being proud have just taken off my too tight maternity jeans having found a pair of yoga tracksuit bottoms in the cupboard - think they used to belong to a girl who worked here. i'm soooo comfy now. Clients or no clients - I don't care. Strangely, I feel like smoking....trackie bottoms seem to be bringing out the slob in me. yeah but no but yeah but.

KristinaM · 15/09/2005 17:39

Hi everyone, welcome ScottishMum.

Enthusia - we looked at the Honda MPV & were disappointed as the middle seat in the back was tiny - not suitable for a child seat. And it didnt remove, just flipped up. very strange. Did you all know that from May next year, all children under 11 years or under a certain height ( cant remeber) have to use a booster seat? Yet hardly any MPVs have integral child seats - they are really handy, much neater and safer than the others ( you cant fit them wrong) and I suspect that older kids will see them as less babyish than a child seat.

Enthusia - I'm sorry you are feeling crap. Surprised that your dentist is doing all that work next month. You will find it hard to lie on your back & I thought they were meant to do as littel as poss on you when preg. or is that just in the first 3 months? I know they wont do amalgum ( sp?) fillings

Jenjam - cots are really interesting compared with sanitary towels . I think it just depends on how far apart in age your kids are. If you are only having one thats ok. But if you plan to have another with 3 years or so, you will need to put the toddler out the cot bed/toddler sized bed for the baby. i guess they are good if your toddler's room is really small.

KristinaM · 15/09/2005 17:48

Jenjams - I gave in as well on the maternity trousers and bought jeans, joggers and a couple of tops from H&M. Am very pleased - the tops are great, not too frumpy and were £15. Yes I know its not cheap if you think you will only wear them for the next 10 weeks, but last time I was wearing the tops for ages, as my huge BF boobs went from a size 8 ( pre preg) to size 16!!! And unlike the flabby tummy, there is NOTHING you can do while you are BF.Yup, another thing they dont tell you in the Bf propaganda.

BTW where have you all found nice , casual maternity wear? Most of the stuff I've seen looks really middle aged( and i bet I'm the oldest person on this thread!!!!)

twinkle1 · 15/09/2005 17:55

to answer questions, as far as i know some people have more braxton hicks than others because they have higher hormone levels and or a more sensetive/irratble uterus. No its fine to rub tummy, i just mean if you are having braxton hicks and start rubbing tummy you may well bring more on!!! or not depending on how sensetive your uterus is.
Kristina the difference betwen getting spinal and epidural is they leave a v fine plasic tube taped into your back versus spinal where they put needle in inject and then take needle out. Never had epidural but spinals both felt fine, just a bit uncomfy, its just the thought of the needle that freaks me out, will still be having it done for this c/section.
On a different note it is so cold here, so im off to put the gas fire on

babyonboard · 15/09/2005 17:55

I have all but avoided specific 'maternity wear' bought a couple of bits, the ntook advantage of all the elasticated waist skirts and longer length tops that are around at the moment (miss selfridge and topshop are great for cheap ones of these)i figure i can wear all those afterwards..which makes me feel better about spending..
also made a few things, which will be passed on to pregnant friends in later months, as , and i am so proud!, they where wholly succesful and rather dashing!

babyonboard · 15/09/2005 18:01

ooh and jenjam..try ikea..and mothercare they both have what sounds what you are looking for and you can browse online..
nova..hope you make it out tonight..it might make you feel better!

Busyalexsmummy · 15/09/2005 18:07

this

won this cot in beech colour off ebay last night for £30!!!!!!!!!!! am picking it up saturday!

babyonboard · 15/09/2005 18:09

wow busy..thats amazing!
i've been trying to get the mothercare glider cot on ebay for ages but it's always too close to new price when you count courier fees.
fortunately my auny has a cot-bed that we are inheriting as they are decamping to new zealand and don't want to pay shippage , and as baby is only 13 months it is almost new! yey!

Enthusia · 15/09/2005 18:11

Busy - what a bargain, I was looking at that one in store - very jealous now, think you have beaten me on ebay bargains!!!!!!

RE: Maternity Wear

I bought a fantastic top w/matching jogging trousers from Dorothy Perkins specifically for Yoga but have been practically living in them. They are really comfy and I have to admit not at all sloppy looking. The top is a v-neck with shorter front to accommodate/show off bump and the back a tad longer. The trousers have a really comfy elasticated waist. I bought this in the blue/grey colour and it was well worth every penny.
I posted before about their maternity sale. They were doing BOGOF on the linen style trousers and vests (vests being £3 bogof and trouser £15 bogof) which i thought was a bargain. I wear them all the time. Unfortunately I cannot stand nightwear anymore and am glad I did not fork out the extortionate prices for maternity PJ's.

Another lived in item is the denim skirt they have in Mothercare, perhaps not everyone's cup of tea but I really like it. It has elastic bits at the side so that the skirt sort of grows with your bump. I've been wearing that for a couple of months now (not continually of course).

And of course, there is ebay! I bought a JoJo linen suit when first pregnant though shirt doesn't button over bump now and trousers are still a tad big and a couple of summer dresses. They washed up well and were a real bargain.

BoB - I'm very impressed with your tailor skills. I'd love to be able to make my own clothes. Really I would. Haven't a clue.
(Forgot to mention that i bought some clothes a couple of sizes up with elasticated waists but do feel a bit frumpy in some of the skirts)

Nova - Sounds like a nice relaxing afternoon. Hope your dinner out goes well and that you enjoy the company.

goldenoldie · 15/09/2005 18:18

Twinkle - lucky for me I never have any problems with GA, not even feeling sick.

Kristina - can't advise you on the cars you mention, but we have just got a Volvo V70 with two extra toddler seats in the back!

Enthusia · 15/09/2005 18:19

Right off to antenatal, wish me luck!!!!

goldenoldie · 15/09/2005 18:20

Welcome Scottishmum - N10 is Muswell Hill?, there are a few of us in N. Ldn. Hope you can make the next meet-up.

KristinaM · 15/09/2005 18:20

Good luck Enthusia - try to keep a straight face if they are all nutters

tessasmum · 15/09/2005 19:07

I really can't keep up with all this!

Welcome to new people, you must have already picked up that we are barking on here however we don't bite

Feeling pretty rough today, well, feeling my age I think! Kristina, I'm sure that I can beat you on age here, though I haven't looked up the stats, and I'm feeling every one of those years today. Strange as I was full of energy yesterday though I am having real trouble sleeping - last night I woke after about 2 hours because I was very hot, then DH had a nightmare so I got yelled at, then heartburn tried to start up and finally got leg cramps. At this point I gave up, went downstairs and watched hideous American birth programmes featuring every intervention known to man, all performed by men. Enough to give me nightmares of my own
Tonight I am going to have a long, deep bath (with no 2 year old stealing my bubbles or trying to get in with me!) and sleep the sleep of the dead! Here's hoping

Busy - lovely cot and what a bargain.
We went for cotbed for Tessa and have just acquired a cot for No 2 (a long story that I may rant over at a later date!) Hadn't thought through another baby at the time but it will work out well for us as they will be sharing a room and by the time they are both growing out of cot/cotbed they will be old enough for bunkbeds if we are still here.
BTW JenJam Tessa's cotbed is from Savannah range (I think) at Mamas and Papas. Think they do both cot and cotbed version and it sounds like it might suit.

As for weight - I'm the same weight as I was at this stage with Tessa but I'm pretty sure I started off 1/2 stone heavier at the beginning this time. What I do know is that the bump is SOLID, very little give at all and I still haven't a clue which bit is which. I could feel a bottom last time and wriggly limbs but placenta is at the front now and I think I just have a bowling ball in there

As for maternity stuff - ebay and Matalan! With the hope that last times stuff will do when it gets cold otherwise I'll be hibernating!

All this talk about cars - must try out the Jane lie-flat seat in the back with Tessa's car-seat.

Still knackered but have managed to rabbit on quite well, I'll give someone else a chance now!

BEKsmum · 15/09/2005 19:07

Afternoon girls, have come on here to get away from my son who has turned into the spawn of satan. Shouting, yelling and whacking me as we walked down the high street - lovely Got to ask why do people stare, you'd have thought they've never seen a child throwing a wobbly before. I spent the time deep breathing and walking along trying not to make eye contact with anyone

I've just spent an hour with a friend looking for her wedding dress and she looked fantastic, shame the kids were being such a pain in the arse!

Bob rofl at your and your contact lenses, I've put two in one eye before and wondered why everything was blurry if that makes you feel any better!!!

Chacha, sorry to here you are in so much pain, I've just been told off by the mw for pulling myself up by the stomach muscles, she said this can lead to back pain so her advice was that when lying down roll on to your side and ease yourself up, & when sitting down again turn slightly to the side and use your arms to push yourself up right. Hope that helps a bit.

Enthusia don't worry we all have days like this. Find something to spoil yourself with and it'll soon pass.

Welcome aboard Scottishmum.

Visit to mw was fine, got told off for not drinking enough water and told to rotate my ankles and get them above my heart in the evenings if possible, that's ok but makes watching telly upside down in bed a bit difficult!! Baby is now head down and mw said that it was very long - eek, but this also explained why I have felt so uncomfortable this week as baby had decided to go from breech to the right way round so I'm quite pleased about that. Also blood pressure has gone down to a reasonable level so am feeling very pleased with myself all in all.

Right ds is off to bed so I'm going to go back downstairs, speak to you all tomorrow Beks (31+4)

tessasmum · 15/09/2005 19:24

Oh, just remembered. I sorted out hiring a TENS machine today, can I join the organised club?

ChaCha · 15/09/2005 19:30

Ohhhhh...Tessasmum - explain pls. How did you go about hiring one and how do they work?

Beksmum - Your m/w appt sounds like it went well and you are right to feel pleased Keep drinking that water though and thanks for back tips. Must try that.

Londoner · 15/09/2005 19:45

Hello all!

I've been at work last few days & come back to not only reams of conversation but a new thread as well, mon dieu! I don't know where to start, I'll have to catch up over next few days I think!

BTW, don't know where your recipe forum is but I hit gold tonight girls.....
Have been thinking quite a lot recently about Palmiers, you know those delicious palm leaf shaped sugared pastries?(MMMM...) Well, I bought some puff pastry, thought this would be a good start... Pre-heated oven to V. HOT, rolled out a rectangle of puff pastry putting granulated sugar on the rolling surface first. Then sprinkled MORE sugar directly onto top surface of pastry. Next, define where the centre of rectangle is and roll in pastry from the left then right until you reach the centre... so you have a sort of 'proclamation scroll' of pastry. Turn it onto its side and slightly squash it or firm it. Then wrap in cling film or foil or something and put in freezer for 20 mins.
When chilled, take out, unwrap and just slice the roll into @quarter inch slices and place @ 2" apart on a buttered baking tray. Cook on top shelf for 7 mins, turn over & cook for further 3 mins and transfer to cooling rack.
These are amazing! Look just like real palmiers! And taste divine... and so easy!

Have managed to get kids to do every single thing I wanted at top speed this evening with promise of another palmier, lol. Now watch my waistline grow!

Look forward to catching up with you all tomorrow!

Enthusia · 16/09/2005 07:39

Morning all.

Right then Antenatal.

It was actually pretty good. It was being taken by my midwife, which was good, she is about 50+ and a no nonsense kind of women, but realistic! She went through the 3 stages of labour and quite a few of the couples there knew about the various bits, the lady next to me knew more about some of the pain relief options than I did, like Pethidine. They were also a few people who didn't seem to know much at all. So a mixed bunch.

The MW explained a few bits I didn't know about; such as the injection you can have when the baby is born to speed up delivery of the placenta; when the hospital like you to come in, and some of other pros and cons I had not heard about some of the pain relief options.

From the list of cons on the pethidine side, I don't think I want to try that, anyone on here used it and liked it?

The MW explained the epidural as being 'not painful on insertion' and actually crossed out my con of it being painful when the needle is inserted and the tube pushed in etc, she said that you don't feel anything. Is this true?

She was very relaxed and made the whole thing humorous by adding things like, 'mad shopping' and 'spring cleaning' to the list of labour symptoms. She also said that it was very difficult to tell the difference between Braxton Hicks contractions and real contractions if you have them full on and that the only real difference is that Braxton Hicks fade away. She even mentioned using TENs on BH, so she obviously thought they could be painful!!!!!!

Met a few people there that seemed nice, especially one lady that I said should join us on here, but I did find it weird that out of all the people in the room there were only one or two that I felt I could chat to properly, yet on here everyone seems friendly, with it and open. Is it just because it is the internet and it is different, or that the kind of people who log on here (ie, us) are a certain kind of people or what? Did find that very strange.

Anway that was about it. Have my NCT antenatl on Saturday that DH is coming to and that lasts for 6 hours, so will probably find out more then.

Beks - well done on your BP, obviuosly Spawn of Satan is not effecting it too much

Tessa - hope you slept better last night and did not watch anymore horrible birth programmes!!!

Right then today - my first ever coffee morning at 10! Then shopping then meeting friend in pub for a drink after work - get all gossip from start of school year hooray!!! Sounds like a good day, thank God for that, need it after yesterday!

Oh and just a quick question, has anyone else got earache or know if it is anything to do with PG, it has been coming and going in my right ear now for weeks, haven't had it checked out as it can go away for days and then only comes back for a couple of minutes, at mo though it goes away for about 20 mins and then comes back for a min. Hey I am having contractions in my ear better start timing them!!!!!

Hoorayyyyyy 32 weeks today!!!!!!
