Here we go ladies, a brand new sparkly thread that should see us all into our 2nd trimester Smile

Many thanks for the warm welcomes Smile

I've felt lots of movements this evening, I was sitting in quite a twisted position which is why I think I felt it so much.

OP posts:

GoldFrakkincenseAndMyrrh · 14/12/2010 16:15

I'm sure your sister will see sense, cycle. If all else fails then burst into tears!

LisMcA · 14/12/2010 16:24

Yeah its in Inverness Frakk. I'm not sure about leaving him with someone I don't know.

I've secretly sounded out my mum and sister to see if they fancied a weekend at a nice hotel in Inverness :o but i'm hoping i can maybe get bridie to reconsider.

SaltedPretzels · 14/12/2010 16:28

Petalouda thanks for taking the time to do these things they are very much appreciated. I wonder if more people would like to move near Cumbria I'm a little lonely up here lol. Heading to Epsom next week to visit family so that will be great.

Have just finished buying everything Smile got the Pram, cot bed, crib car seat and pushchair at the weekend so now we just need baby!

I've had a catch up with all your posts now I'm back home. I'm shocked at some of your bosses attitudes, we employ 18 staff at our Mountaineering, guided walk and outdoor pursuits company here in Cumbria, whilst I understand it's hard keeping a role open and paying for the new mum and the stand in, there is Government help with funding this period, so your employers aren't greatly put out. If they are kicking up such a fuss, 1 they have to deal with their own issues and 2 it's an indirect compliment to how damn good you are at your job, how valued you are in the workplace and how much you'll be missed, so well done you for being fantastic!

Oh before I forget, check out your local auction house, we went as a number of small business fail at this time of year especially in this climate (not good for them) however, some are children's and nursery shops! We picked up a lovely £300 Cossatto 3 in 1 cot bed for £26, I love shopping ha ha Xmas Grin

Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your kin

Xmas Grinxxxx

GoldFrakkincenseAndMyrrh · 14/12/2010 16:30

Oooh is that the Cosatto one that the side drops on, salted? I've been looking at that via Amazon.

SaltedPretzels · 14/12/2010 17:23

It's the Modo, lovely dark chunky wood, very contemporary, we love it. There were many people bidding on bulk things to sell on, we were one of two pregnant couples just getting what one off bits we wanted, it was a pretty easy auction to win anything that came in a one quantity for real cheap. Silver Cross Linear 2 in 1 pushchair £50 (other couple wanted it too but no way was I giving in, I like this pushchair) and the car seat that fits the pushchair for £10. Can't believe how lucky we've been, sorry if it sounds like bragging but we are really happy and thought some of you may not have thought of checking an auction out. Make sure f you want new and perfect that it's a liquidation stock auction as others are for fire damage, or second hand etc.

caramellokoalalover · 14/12/2010 17:41

saltedpretzels you sound all sorted, and thanks for the tip re auction houses, I hadn't considered that. I don't need that many of the big items as still have them from DS but I do need a moses basket/crib for the first 6mths in our room.

Has anyone thought about a hammock like the Amby Nest one, or used one already? I really like the look of them but am not sure about whether it'd be a nightmare to make the transition from the cosy hammock to a flat, flat, fat cot when bubba is 6mths old. Any thoughts anyone?

cyclebump can't believe your boss, what an idiot!

All these wedding palavers are making me wonder now whether I had been too hasty assuming my newborn would be allowed to come to my friends wedding at the start of May. Guess I'll have to wait for the invites to go out and then test the waters.

Petalouda, love the stats! Thanks...hoping you're in need of procrastination again soon so you can work some more numbers magic.

Sassy20 · 14/12/2010 17:46

Thanks for the welcomes and thanks April for the update on SMP- good news - every bit counts!

Just wondering if anyone out there has had a flu jab or has any up-to-date info on it. I know it's been in the news today saying pregnant women should get it but is it just propaganda again or is it better to be vaccinated - anyone got any ideas?

Thanks.

Confused
LisMcA · 14/12/2010 17:54

Salted That's the same travel system as we've bought. Envy at your bargins. Although we have been given it by my parents. I thought we did well to get £130 off at Babies R Us!!

LisMcA · 14/12/2010 18:01

Sassy on the flu jab front I can't get a straight answer from any medical professional. I had swine flu last year (it was not pleasant at all) and therefore have immunity now. So I asked if i needed the jab if it's immunising against the same strain then I shouldn't need it. But no one can tell me.

From my midwife I got "do you want to feel like you did last year" no "well you'd better get it".

GP was slightly more helpful, but just kept repeating the government spiel of it's recommended that all preganant women get it.

I haven't got it yet, have GP appointment tomorrow with another GP so I'll see what they say.

Not much help I know, but there have been a few threads on the pregnancy topic if you do a search maybe you can glean more info there.

Sassy20 · 14/12/2010 18:08

Thanks LisMcA.
I wasn't going to bother but husband is keen for me to get it after doing some reading up and the way bugs seem to fly around my workplace it might be wise.

Wish I knew if Govt spiel was more about actual good advice or like someone I know suggested them trying to get rid of a load of leftover vaccine from last year!!!

Might ring my midwife tomorrow and she what she says.

SaltedPretzels · 14/12/2010 18:12

Had flu jab 2 months ago, went to drop in clinic at GP's everyone over 60 sat around cloughing up lots of nasty stuff (pleasant) Hmm

Nurse was shocked when I walked in and asked what I'd come for Confused she read her leaflets, I pointed out the posters advertising flu jabs in the waiting room says pregnant women as well as coffin dogers and people with low immunity.

She said it was recommended but wanted to read it for herself, when she was happy, jab and go.

Not had a sniffle Smile rather a jab in the arm than flu!!

Petalouda · 14/12/2010 18:16

Wow, I feel like I've missed out this afternoon!

Architien thanks for your story. I've been a bit fearful for my job, but realistically I know I can take them to the cleaners if they drop me.

I'm planning on taking only 4 months off - we get 100% pay for first 2 weeks, 90% for the next 4, and then 50% + SMP for the next 12, and then SMP only. I'm the main earner in our house, and we've just bought our first house, so I'm planning to return a day or two before the end of the summer term so I can get full pay for August (summer hols - we're lucky if they last the whole month these days).

I'm also planning on going back full time. It sounds brutal, and I know it's going to be difficult. But if DH can flex his days to work weekends and have the baby 2 days during the week, thats only 3 days childcare to pay for. And, we should be able to afford that out of my increased pay this year (god bless the teachers pay scales, and me being close enough to the bottom to benefit!) and extra cash after paying 2 loans back earlier this year!

I'm also honestly not sure I could cope with being a SAHM. I don't doubt it's hard work. And as Muffin said, it's probably a good idea to stay in the career I've only just begun! (plus it's school, short(ish) days and holidays galore!)

Salted interesting to hear about your mountaineering company! DH is into all that stuff, he works in retail, selling all the kit but really would love to be an instructor (again, he used to teach kids!). He's talked about doing his SPA & the other qualis, but they're just too expensive for him to do at the moment, and he couldn't clock up the mountain hours needed. I think Dartmoor's not technically mountainous enough to count!

3 more days at work for me! Then less than a term to go till mat leave! woop!

Sassy20 · 14/12/2010 18:18

Thanks Salted.

I've got one booked for Friday so I think unless I hear anything drastic before then I'll just go ahead as would rather not have flu. Hope I'm not surrounded by pensioners coughing!

Smile
BeetleBaby · 14/12/2010 19:10

Wow busy day on here today!

Only three more wake ups before Christmas holiday, I am so grateful because I honestly don't think I'd have the energy for another day! Not helped by my back and sciatica/SPD being bad, so I'm not sleeping at night and rocking the 'waddle/hobble' walk during the day.

Sassy I've had the flu jab, but then I usually have it anyway due to being Asthmatic. I didn't get it a couple of years ago and ended up with the flu the week before Christmas. Was horrid and I learnt my lesson!

Salted I am Xmas Envy at your bargins! Hopefully we'll be able to pick up some deals at the Mama's & Papa's factory and outlet shops next week while I'm up north.

I am rather Angry at DH department. He's a researcher but also does some teaching during term time. He asked what arrangements are needed to cover his teaching during parternity leave. Apparently it's a case of "oh, usually people just come in and teach anyway" Xmas Hmm Well, he won't be, he'll be at home on nappy changing and tea making duties if I have anything to say about it!

nitnat84 · 14/12/2010 19:51

ok any teachers out there?
I plan on going back to work in September but it seems silly not to be paid for the 6 week summer hol so can I end maternity leave at the start of hols and be paid for the hols or do I have to do a few weeks in July to be put on payroll for the summer?

nitnat84 · 14/12/2010 20:23

Petalouda- just read your message about going back at the end of summer term. Are you 100% def u have to as I keep hearing that you don't and others saying u do?

happycamel · 14/12/2010 20:33

"April" I noticed Petalouda say the map was putting you in Frimley, New Zealand. Does that mean you're actually in Frimley, UK?

I'm in Sandhurst, work in Frimley and am booked in to Frimley Park. I just wondered cos it would be lovely to know someone else going to the same hospital.

Jaylar · 14/12/2010 20:34

It's rampant posting on here today.

I've had flujab. Other half who is a geeky scientist read up on all the data and said it was a no brainer. And Sassy20 it's not possible it's a ploy to use up old vaccine (though I do love a good conspiracy theory) as it's live and each batch has a very short shelf life. I had no side effects and not even a sore arm.

Well done you Petaloda for trying to arrange childcare with your other half. I went back to work full-time when DD was 18 months as there were no PT options out there. DP went down to doing 4 days over 3 which was tough but I earn more than him so made practical sense. It was a tough transition but did wonders both for his relationship with DD and also for ours.

I became really resentful at him having a life outside the house (being SAHM was not my preferred choice) and I felt I was doing everything on the domestic front. But him having over a year of being main carer has transformed our family for the better and made us very equal parents in a way we just couldn't be before.

I'm being made redundant at the end of Jan so he's handing the baton back to me as main carer for another 12 months or however long it takes me to get a job, but he's still chosen to rearrange his hours so that he'll be doing 5 days over 4 because he can't bear the thought of just seeing his kids at the weekend.

Sorry for rambling thread but I do think if you have the chance for both parents to go part-time or switch roles around it does end up being positive for everyone in the long run.

kittycatcat · 14/12/2010 22:29

Hi all. Have caught up on a the posts but am on my I phone so apologies for lack of personal comments. Grrr for those of you with crap bosses!
In other news! I'm carrying for the blue team :-) We had our scan this morning. All is well but I have to go back jan 6th for heart examination as the little fella wouldn't oblige and get into position. I was sent for a walk. Nothing. Sent to the loo. Nothing. So back I go. Which is kinda nice tbh. Big event in at work on 6th so dreading telling work tomorrow.

GoldFrakkincenseAndMyrrh · 15/12/2010 00:50

beetle - I'm the one having the baby and they intimate that I might want to carry on with some things anyway. That's universities/academia the world over. They can't do anything if he sticks to his guns though but it's probably best if he arranges cover with someone on the understanding they return the favour.

Hope baby obliges for your next scan, kitty.

Anyone else still waiting or am I the last? Just a week left to go!!

Thaney · 15/12/2010 07:57

Sassy I had a flu jab and had no side effects at all. From what I understood of it, however bad flu is for you it is much worse for your unborn child. They are unable to regulate their body temperature in the womb so can overheat very easily if you have a temperature. This can cause problems with brain development.

AprilMeadow · 15/12/2010 08:59

HappyCamel, I actually live in Fleet but will be having baby at Frimley :) I was born there along with my brother and my dc's were all born there as well :o

I've spent a little time on Ante-natal, CDS and Post-Natal and cant fault any of the departments. Most of the midwives i have had have been really lovely, infact I had the same mw deliver dd's 1&2.

Sassy20 · 15/12/2010 17:09

Thanks for everyone's comments. I feel a lot better about having my flu jab now and will definitely go ahead with it.

Smile
ecuse · 15/12/2010 18:23

I asked the GP at my 16-week check whether I could have a flu jab and she said no, they're not giving it to pregnant women this year. But after this conversation I checked the NHS website and it said pregnant women are recommended. So I phoned the surgery and told them I wanted one and after some conferring they said I could have one tomorrow morning. Result! Hadn't worked out the bit about it being worse for the baby, convinced me I should push for one, so thanks!

Liv77 · 15/12/2010 22:29

I have my 24 week check with my GP on Friday, this thread has reminded me I was going to ask about the flu jab as none of the midwifes/obs have mentioned it at any of the other checks.

I have a stinking cold at the moment, definatley do not want Flu!
