Here we go ladies, a brand new sparkly thread that should see us all into our 2nd trimester Smile

Many thanks for the warm welcomes Smile

I've felt lots of movements this evening, I was sitting in quite a twisted position which is why I think I felt it so much.

Hrmm the return of the snow, well more blizzard! Started to settle and really massive snowflakes!

On one hand it's great as we have a winter survival skills course this weekend to teach, on the other hand we have family in Epsom to drive to on Monday morning. Living in the middle of mountains has a couple of disadvantages when it comes to 'needing' to get out!

Was really sick again this morning Sad has anyone else got the horrible side effect of pregnancy Blush excess mucus i.e in nose and back of throat.

Found out it's got it's own made Pregnancy Rhinitis! Yuk! It's nice waking in the night and first thing in the morning to have to cough it up Hmm where is my bloom Hmm

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 16/12/2010 13:05

I'm still waiting for the bloom as well SP, but I haven't had it the last 2 times so I doubt it will arrive this time!

DS and I have got a cold at the moment, so we are suffering from excess mucus. I cough to clear it, but if I cough too hard I end up gagging - not pleasant.

I had my 20 week check yesterday and all is well. The baby played dodge the doppler, so the MW was all over my tummy trying to catch the little blighter Grin

Can you believe Christmas is nearly upon us? yikes. Too much to do and not enough time.

OP posts:
SaltedPretzels · 16/12/2010 16:04

LOL they do run off from that doppler don't they (unless their asleep)!

With my 2DD I bloomed, felt on top of the world a little nausea for the first few weeks then perfect pregnancy, maybe this is a boy Hmm

9 days just sounds too crazy, although I guess it will be over in a blink of an eye, next year will be wonderful with a baby, they don't cost as much as my two teenagers, this years wanted listed is pinned to the notice board in the kitchen, they even took the precaution of laminating it so it doesn't just blow off when I open the back door like it did last year Hmm
Get a load of this:
Anti gravity experiences and a car to learn in for 16 year oldShock and a scooter for 15 year old Shock.

When I was 15 & 16 I got a TV or stereo at best! Hmm Santa had better start subsidising Christmas Xmas Grin

Cyclebump · 16/12/2010 16:30

I've been kicked all day again today, and not always in nice places Blush

It's nice though as baby went a bit quiet for a couple of days when I had a nasty cough, DP pointed out he was probably as knackered as I was and it had knocked his routine out of kilter.

Have really bad hip and ligament pain though, is truly pants, anyone else having this?

architien · 16/12/2010 17:30

Well reporting back after a day or so of letting things sink in.

I had community midwife appt two days ago. I came out in a crying rage. It's the first time I've seen this person (i'm sure almost everyone here is in the same boat with seeing a different one each time). I showed her the scan pic and asked "which way is my abdominal wall" to which she snapped at me that I didn't need to know. Then when I asked about Health in Pregnancy grant form she told me flatly i was not able to apply (date is moved to 21st, so according to HMRC that's the last EDD you can apply). I explained that I had alled to check, she looked at me as if i was lying and told me that her information came direct from the government and was correct. Grrr...

Then when I said what had happened in my first birth and that I live 13 mins easy 30 mph direct drive (3 roads, so would be very quick by abulance if needs be) from the hospital and was considering home birth, she said she couldn't understand why i would even consider it and that i would need an inspection of my home and well (she then searched franticly through my notes) you have a slightly higher than average BMI so you wont be allowed. Besides this is not the time or the place to discuss it. I started to explain twice what had happened to my mother, and what had happened to me in my first birth but she spoke over me. At the end I managed to ask what was the time and place...but she told me she had other mothers to see. My husband was livid. I was bright red.
I've made an appointment with an OB tyo discuss this properly. God help me if i end up with her at my delivery.....

On the plus side...got home called HMRC again to double check. you have to be 24weeks +1 day on 31st December to get it. I get the impression that different midwives are saying different things. Well that might be good news for some of you so I thought I'd share.

BTW waited 15 days for an M&S hamper when I had paid extra for nominated day on 1st December then they dropped it in a neighbours garden without telling anyone. If anyone is thinking of ordering the same from them I just thought you'd like to know as it would save you some trouble.

Pelvic pain persists but it's all quite normal so taking it in my wobberly penguin walk stride.

Baby is moving about a fair bit. I've been teaching my 18mth old to not jump all over mum and emphasising the bump by patting and saying "Aw baby" which he has been copying and more mindful around. It really made me laugh when he was in the bath last night with my husband splashing and then he leant forward and patted my husbands tum and said "Aw baby". Poor husband went bright red although we both laughed and I caught him pulling him tum in the bedroom mirror later on. Poor man!

hippy3 · 16/12/2010 18:39

arch the beginning of your story sounds CRAP your midwife sounds like a B*h. But I did laugh out loud at the end ..... Smile

I have just been trying to see the mini kicks that are going on inside me. But everytime I look at my stomach It stops!! Feels like when one is asleep then the other one is active and vice versa. I get to see them again tomrrow. I do feel lucky being able to see them everyweek. I dont know how I would be able to manage not seeing them so often. I am a TOTAL worrrier ! so this suits me fine.....
Am bracing myself for the snow.....

is everyone ready for xmas...Its only just realised that its xmas eve next friday ! Shock

Petalouda · 16/12/2010 18:52

Hey all,

Architien that midwife sounds like a disgrace to midwives. What's the liklihood you'll see her again? How is a midwife appointment not the time or place to discuss birth?!

Hippy it must be weird with two in there! I'm already convinced I have octo-baby, who manages to kick on 3 sides at once!

I've had a new symptom today - every time I've laughed or coughed today (lots of giggles) it hurts just above my belly button. I'm pretty sure it's my abdominal muscles, nothing baby/uterus related.

It was getting quite sore by the end of the day. My colleague reckons it's my stupidly heavy computer bag (which does need streamlining!) and general bending/carrying/existing. Which is probably right.

One more day at school, then 2 weeks off should fix it. If not, I'm seeing the midwife again in a fortnight.

Anyone else had this?!

hippy3 · 16/12/2010 19:19

petalouda I had this pain just below my belly button. It was weird. It lasted for about a week ten days. Felt like something hard was there..I though it was just my placenta..? Confused but what do I know? I figure we will all be getting strange pains and muscle aches. I keep getting what feels like a pulled muscle either side of my stomach when I walk. Have been told it nothing to worry about..have enough to worry about already as long as Its not contractions i am keeping an open mind ! Smile

It could also be your bag....! x Grin

LisMcA · 16/12/2010 19:42

Hello peeps!

Not much snow here this time thankfully! But it is bitterly cold and everything is very icy!

Doctors yesterday, looks like I have SPD :(
I've been referred for physio with the likelyhood of getting a support belt. Only 17 weeks to go!!

Had my scan at the "too much cake" clinic. Have to say I was slightly disappointed. I fully expected to see Buster in all his glory again but they were only interested in looking at my blood vessels in my groin. We did get a quick glimpse of a bum and feet as he tried to kick away the wand thing the man was invading his space with. DH took the morning off work to come. I'm not even sure what they were looking for. Anyone have any ideas???

arch Your midwife sounds useless. I'd contact the supervisor of midwives for you area and ask to see someone else. At the end of the day you are entitled to have the pregnancy and birth you want and if the midwife you saw wasn't even willing to listen to then that is not the level of care you expect. I'm actually Shock, my MW is a bit useless, but she at least listens pretends to listen to my concerns.

JustKeepSparkling · 16/12/2010 19:45

I get very sharp ouch pains on the sides of my bump, esp when i try and turn over in my sleep.
(gives DH a fright, lol!)

Architien - that is truly shocking treatment, if you are up to it, officially complain. There are paths to follow, i think you need to write to the Head of Midwives (HOM) of your pct/hosp trust.
Well done on finding out about the grant, i think i'm eligible, 24+6 on Jan 1st? I'm seeing my MW on the 30th so will ask her then.
If i get it, i will put it towards the ridiculously expensive buggy i want Xmas Blush
And definitely ask for other opinions. You are never 'not allowed' a home birth, it may be medically not sensible for various reasons but it is always up to you to decide.
grrrrrr on your behalf.

More snow here today, could do without it tbh. Both DC finished sch/pre-sch though so that's a relief, everyone knackered after too long a term & too many Christmas shows/parties, etc.

Sassy20 · 16/12/2010 19:46

Wow architen don't like the sound of your midwife. I think I'm being spoilt as have seen the same midwife each time and she's been really good.

I was also wondering where my 'bloom' was but according to my friend who had a baby last year it just doesn't happen sometimes. I feel tired and sickly again - although nowhere near as bad as 1st 3 months!

JustKeepSparkling · 16/12/2010 19:51

Lis - I'm guessing maybe looking for thrombosis/embolism stuff if looking at blood vessels in groin. Often caused by pg, though not sure if linked to too much cake?

LifesComplicated · 16/12/2010 22:34

The reason that thrombosis/embolism might be checked due to too much cake is that having a higher than 'healthy' BMI increases the risk factors for those issues. As does smoking, having been on the pill for a long time, poor circulation/mobility and various other things.
It's good that they're paying you good attention. I've had SPD symptoms for several weeks and can hardly walk, but my GP wasnt interested and my MW just said she'd refer me for physio and I've never heard anything since. Grrrr. Sorry for the rant.

SaltedPretzels · 17/12/2010 08:23

Just reading the mumsnet newsletter and look what I found:

Pregnant women urged to have flu jab: The Department of Health has reissued its call for all pregnant women to have the seasonal flu jab, after Health Protection Agency officials confirmed that the H1N1 'swine flu' virus is circulating again and has already caused the death of ten people this winter. The current vaccine offers protection against H1N1 and two other flu strains. (Telegraph 12.12.10; join the discussion on Talk)

Cyclebump · 17/12/2010 09:48

Gosh Architien, your mw sounds like a prize heifer!

I too have been referred to the physio. I have underlying hip stuff so am very pleased to have managed things thus far without TBH Smile

I had my flu jab ages ago and I've managed to miss out on most of the real nasties going round the office apart from the cough and that's nearly gone.

Last day at work before the break today. Hurray!

ecuse · 17/12/2010 10:02

I have had hip/groin pain, although relatively mild I think and have been referred to the physio. She did an assessment and declared it Pelvic Girdle Pain - so I'm going along to the PGP clinic next week to learn some exercises.

She also gave me some wrist splints for the carpal tunnel syndrome, which seem to be helping at bit.

Cyclebump · 17/12/2010 10:19

Oh and is anyone else getting that pain in their necks?

You know what it is, that sudden turn of the head to window shop when you walk past a baby shop now that the third trimester is approaching and suddenly it feels less naughty to start buying baby clothes etc..... Wink

Petalouda · 17/12/2010 10:20

Morning all,

We finally have snow in Devon. My colleague and I got about halfway down the A30 this morning, when we decided that not being able to see the road through the lying snow and blizzard conditions meant we should probably turn around! So the xmas hols start early for me!

Even better - DH is snowed in with me, so I can get him to move/unpack some of the boxes still hanging around!

My sore belly seems to be ok as long as I take things easy, it's only done a couple of twinges so far today. Probably a good thing that i'm not in work.

SaltedPretzels · 17/12/2010 11:35

April & Happycamel

Today my company is taking a group out navigation and winter skills training in the mountains of West Cumbria and you two especially came to mind.

They are a team of midwives from Frimley Park! They are lovely women too, I got their gear all ready ice axes and crampons and asked if they knew how to use them, then traded what I know for a how to avoid forceps/venthose delivery advice lol

AprilMeadow · 17/12/2010 13:44

How bizzare!! Love how you were trading info :o

caramellokoalalover · 17/12/2010 13:51

Do share what you learnt SaltedPretzels, I'd love to avoid forceps/ventouse this time round!

Snow here too in London, but just a little and now the sun is out and it's blue skies. My favourite kind of winters day. Feeling very festive now Xmas Smile

Petalouda · 17/12/2010 15:05

If it were possible to swap ventousse/forceps for ice axes & crampons, DH would be a pro and we'd be on our 4th by now!

Speaking of which, he's finally headed off into the wilderness to work, even though it's still snowing. It was nice to spend a morning with him, I could get used to it! Hope another dump heads over soon so I can call him back.

Sadly, it's too late for me, school finished at 14:40. So woop! It's the holidays!

GoldFrakkincenseAndMyrrh · 17/12/2010 16:58

Oooh what a witch archi! I hope you do complain - MW appointments are exactly the time to discuss anything you want to.

I have an answer to pain just above/below belly button - as the top of your uterus moves up your abs have to move out of the way to accomodate it and any contraction of those muscles like coughing or laughing can result in sharp pain.

I want this HIP grant! Was sorely tempted to wander in and make an appointment at the midwife with my GP whilst I was in the UK but decided that would be a tad dishonest.

In other news does anyone have any natural methods of repelling/getting rid of ants. not so lovely DH forgot to spray the windows/doors of our kitchen before he left (which was after I did) and consequently we've now been invaded again. I've blasted them with chemicals but thinking that might not be best for baby?!

beckie90 · 17/12/2010 19:40

i have spd too had it since 14 weeks and its shocking, somedays its so bad i cannot even get out of bed i was laid there screaming for half hour lol. went for physio she also said my pelvis is tilted higher up one side than the other. never mind only another 17 weeks to deal with it

SaltedPretzels · 18/12/2010 11:22

DH is convinced all babies are born climbers as they come with their own rope and rubber bones Xmas Smile

Midwives day two interrogation ha ha.

General view to lowering the risk of assisted delivery was not to plump for an epidural if you have to get an active epidural which allows you to still feel the contractions. Keep your energy for the second stage by eating and drinking power foods. i.e Lucazade sport, bananas, pasta and cereal bars ll high slow release energy to keep you going and low fat so easier to digest and lets face it if things don't go to plan they are easier to pass out of your body after Xmas Shock

Keeping as active as possible with birth positions that work with gravity appear to be viewed as helpful by all of them.

A couple of them said that they thought the birthing ball was great for women on baby 3 and more as our muscles can't hold baby in the engaged position as well Blush The birthing ball makes the engaged position the comfiest for baby which in turn is easier on us when stage 2 kicks in.

They also all agreed that caster oil is only going to make you sick rather than induce labour, if labour is brought on after taking the oil it will be as a result of pulling your stomach muscles vomiting so aggressively Hmm maybe not tying that option if the time comes.

Raspberry leaf tea (drink of tablets) is undecided some think it helps others think that labour would have started at the same time if people hadn't of taken it but of course they can't prove it. Although they all would try this themselves if faced with a date to induce as it poses no known risks and may prevent an assisted birth if it did work.

They are a really nice bunch one of them lives a few streets away from my in-laws in Epsom. They have invited us to join them for dinner tomorrow on their last day, if I promise not to talk baby all night long Confused is there anything else to talk about Xmas Grin
