Hi all,

I was wondering if and when I might start to expect to feel movements? I'm 16+1, which is probably a bit early...

Has anyone felt anything yet? And if so, what does it feel like? It's my first pg, and I have no idea what to expect.

Mind you, I'd be lucky to feel anything today apart from my sore back - went to the gym yesterday, and I think I might have overdone it a bit Confused. I feel pretty rubbish today, which is not good, as I need to prepare for an interview tomorrow!

jbells any news?

loopy hope your little cherub will feel better soon. How about if you explain to DH that it is a bargain and you are nearly getting the gender scan for half price. Some people who don't like parting with money like getting a bargain - IYKWIM.

rollercoaster I think that is a great idea, adding our predictions to the stats. I will do mine in a mo.

Jbrd I didn't feel movements til I was 21 weeks with first. It feels like butterflies in your tummy, or like your tummy doing a somersault, but slowly. A bit like squirming.

Bonkerz I am going on mat leave at the end of February. Although I only work 3 days a week and my DD & DS are both at school, I want to enjoy those last few months on my own during the day in a very purely selfish kinda way. You will find stuff to do.

Had triple test results through, which is 1 in 590 and a low risk for spina bifida. Not sure if this is good for my age (39) or not Confused

hello everyone, just a quick one will catch up better later once DD has gone to bed

scan went well was a lot clearer than last time everything looks fine, im measuring at 14 wks 1 day which makes my due date the 23rd of may, the pic wasnt great agen tho as baby was being uncooperative and facing my tummy so u can see a nice skull and jaw that looks like a skeleton from halloween lol

next scan is booked in for the 6th of jan, dont know y but afta seeing this scan now hav a feeling its a boy altho cud b completely wrong

Rollercoasteryears · 23/11/2010 16:53

JBrd I didn't feel movement until about 18 weeks with my first pregnancy I think, and to begin with I was always unsure if it really was movement, or just digestion/wind! It begins very subtly and yes slow butterflies pretty much sums it up.

I have just added my prediction to the stats.

Loopy sorry to hear about DD3, pleased to hear she's on the mend though. Let's hope that's it for illness in your family for the time being! I work 3.5 days a week, which is plenty I find. I was doing 3 days a week, which I preferred as a work/home balance.

MummyW I think that's above average for your age - my results letter said that the average for my age (36) was 1 in 360, so it must be less than that for you, so you're probably doing at least twice as well as the age average!

17+2

QwertyQueen · 23/11/2010 17:59

MummyW that is very good for your age :)
Mine is 1:344 and I am 37... but retesting later

Jbrd I felt flutters at about 19 weeks first time round...

Have got a Desperate Housewives DVD and Maltesers ready for when DS gets to bed yippeeeeee :)

MummyWilliams · 23/11/2010 19:06

jbells excellent news!

rollercoaster & qwerty thanks for the reassurance. Last time we had combined nuchal results but this time coz baby was on its tummy the sonographer couldn't get a good view for the nuchal measurement - but did say that it looked fine.

I have uploaded a pic of our scan done at 13+2 shows baby lying on its belly.

Hello hello everyone, SORRY it's been forever since I was last here. Have missed about 12 pages of thread so not sure when I'll have time to catch up with everything!

Hope everyone's well, I've mostly been crazy busy with work, plus DD was ill for a week and I've had a few ups and downs myself - combined test came back 1:170 (I'm 38, but still...) which was a bit of a shock as last time I got 1:1340 though that was a) nearly 3 years ago and b) just nuchal fold. Have been trying to talk to someone about it for the last 3 weeks or so, but I'm classed as low risk so is not as simple as it might be.

It also turns out I have a blocked urethra, which was thought to be a UTI but isn't. Have an appt with the Obs/Gyn clinic on Friday so hoping they'll work it out. Spent part of Saturday in A&E because of it too. Happy days!

Anyway that's enough about my woes. Will try to be a better MNer and keep up with the thread now!

mslucy · 23/11/2010 21:54

MummyW and Zinnia - I get my blood results on Fri when I see the consultant and have already started worrying about them.

They were done on the same day as the 12 week scan and I guess that if they were bad they would have called me soon after they did them. This is what DH thinks and my experience with the hospital I go to tells me that they call you if you get any unusual blood results.

My nuchal was fine - which was iffy with ds2 - but since I'm 40 (and possibly the oldest person here Grin) I can't help but worry.

I had a CVS last time, I guess if something's wrong with me this time, they would go for an amnio as it's too late for a CVS now.

mslucy · 23/11/2010 21:55

having lots of lovely little flutters tho - I felt it early in the last pgs as well, prob because I'm such a runt. Wink

16 + 2

MummyWilliams · 23/11/2010 22:38

zinnia its been ages. The ladies have been worrying about you. Glad to hear things are ok 'well sort of'. I read somewhere about blocked urethra's, I don't know why. It can present itself from 12 weeks if I can recall. Hope they can sort something out for you, sounds very painful. With regards to test results, 1 in 100 or less is considered 'high risk' - I am not sure, but think that is what I have read on this thread somewhere.

mslucy when was your 12 week scan? I had my bloods done last Wednesday and got the results today. You can call your midwife/gp and ask them to give you the results. I'm sure like you say though, that if it was high risk they would've been in touch. But you want to know, which is completely understandable. Have you had/do you have your 16 week appt. with Midwife?

zinnia · 23/11/2010 23:20

Thanks MummyW, sorry to have been the cause of worry to anyone! Wouldn't particularly recommend a blocked urethra, but hoping they will sort on Friday.

As for the test results, round here it's anything less than 1:150 (think it might very between PCTs) so I'm fairly close to the wind, but don't think I want an amnio or CVS anyway as have anti-D antibodies floating around in my bloodstream so would be that bit riskier to have a diagnostic.

Anyway mslucy, if your PCT is like mine they would definitely have called you if your results were high risk (think this is recommended practice), but would second MummyW in calling your midwife if you're anxious.

on the upside felt first definite movements at 15+1 (ie Saturday last week), 2 weeks earlier than last time :)

Had 16 week GP appt today (am 16+4). GP kindly informed me I was having a "complicated pregnancy", which tbh I had kind of figured out for myself.

thanks for all your support - you're all telling me what my rational brain (as opposed to my neurotic brain) already suspects.

I have my 16 week appt with the consultant as I am "high risk" - ie 2 C-sections already.

She looked after me in both my other pgs, so I know I'm in good hands.

mslucy · 24/11/2010 08:22

zinnia just noticed you're NW London (like me).
I'm in Kentish Town - where are you?

zinnia · 24/11/2010 10:03

ooh mslucy a mere stone's throw away! I'm in West Hampstead. Which hospital are you going to? I'm thinking maybe UCL as you haven't had a letter about your scan result yet? Royal Free were quite prompt with mine.

Hello loopy sorry I've been AWOL for so long. Did think about ARC but felt a bit ashamed in ringing them thinking they are more geared for people who have actual cause for concern rather than a

sesamesmith · 24/11/2010 10:04

Just got an ultrasound machine off eBay - it's amazing! Took ages to find the heartbeat but there it was, clear as a bell. It was much lower down than I expected. Hubby listened too - special moment! It's made by Angelsound - careful if you're buying one as some don't pick up the heartbeat till 20 weeks...

Mslucy I had awful worries with the blood tests. They didn't explain that the risk result comes in the post. The doctors and midwife kept saying they'd look into it and didn't. I felt very let down. Eventually it arrived in the post, more than 2 weeks later, dated shortly after the bloods were taken.
Btw, I'll be 40 in January, so only just behind you. Hurrah for older mums!

Poor you, Zinnia. Hopefully things will improve.

15+6. 16 week midwife appointment tomorrow. Glad hubby can come.

Bronchitis easing now, just left with asthma - pants! (And panting, ha ha) Managed to play tennis last night in the cold so feeling good about things.

Hope things going well with everyone. Sorry about poorly children etc xxx

tiredandgrumpy · 24/11/2010 10:30

Hi there. Am jealous of everyone's flutterings. This will be dc3 - I felt dc1 at 17 weeks, dc2 at 15 and am now 16+ without a definite flutter. However, picked up my maternity notes today and it looks like my placenta is on the anterior wall of my uterus, so perhaps that means I'm less likely to feel them until they're a bit stronger. I don't know. I'm still rather windy, so may simply be mistaking the kicks for wind bubbles!

Midwife appt this afternoon, so fingers crossed for a heartbeat!

In out pct, you're considered high risk if the results of nuchal are more than 1 in 200. I noticed a chart which showed that the average risk for a 38 year old (i.e. me) was 1 in 189. So 1 in 580 is way outside the dodgy range and also pretty good for a 39 year old! Think of it as a percentage - 1 in 580 is less than 0.2%! i.e. the docs think that there is a 99.8% chance that the baby doesn't have Down's.

gingerwench · 24/11/2010 12:24

My amnio is now on the 3rd. Not overly worried as 1 in 100 is still 99% chance it is not DS.

Nausea has got massively worse. Not been able to keep food or even much liquid down in the last 24 hours. I've been used to retching in public but the last 2 mornings I've actually vomitted in teh street which is just mortifying. I want to shout "I'm not hungover just pregnant!"

feeling very sorry for myself and struggling in to work to distract myself

cowboylover · 24/11/2010 17:15

Oh gingerwench That sounds dreadful! Is there anything they can do to help you?

I had MW blood tests today and she said I have lost 3 stone (still high BMI) in pregnancy and blood pressure has dropped to 80/50 so they are going to keep an eye on me but may have explained why I have been getting the bad headaches and feeling really tired. Got to go to the Midwife in the next 2 weeks when im 16+ weeks to have the downs blood test as in our area they dont do the nuchal measurements so just trying to fit in more time off work! They are worried about me as I didnt think I was going to be long at the hospital today and ended up there all day so have to reasure my boss im ok!

mslucy · 24/11/2010 18:10

zinnia - Whittington for me.
It's 20 mins walk from our house and I really like it there - I've had 2 babies there, IUI (for DS2) and numerous visits to the EPU (for check ups during fertility treatment and an mc 2 weeks before this one was conceived).

When I had queries with the nuchal with DS2 they gave me my bloods asap, plus counselling and an immediate referral to UCH for a CVS.

My experience with the hospital has shown me they act very promptly and call you with even minor queries - eg low levels of platelets with DS2.

Obviously things can go wrong, but I think they would have been in touch by now.

I'm glad there are some other older mums here - tho still think I'm the oldest Smile

DMCWelshCakes · 24/11/2010 19:01

Hello everybody. Haven't been here for a while as it's been a really busy week. Hope everyone's still ok.

Had a bit of a scare as DiddyDragon jumped on top of me yesterday & landed on my bump. I'm fairly sure I felt movement last night, but the baby's been quite quiet today. Again, I'm fairly sure I've felt some more movement so instinct says all is well. Maybe it's just sulking after getting landed on.

Can I ask if anyone has any recommendations for a good doppler? I'll be 17 weeks on Friday but could do with some extra reassurance.

jbells · 24/11/2010 19:31

hello all. hope everybodys had a nice day
i took DD swimming again today was lovely just hard work getting ready b4 and afta, my head cold wont shift either :( then in afternoon went for lunch with my stepsister who is 38 wks pg, it made me really look forward to having a nice big round bump and being able to see and feel the baby wriggling around :)

DMC- i have just recieved today the doppler bought from amazon. it was reduced to 20 quid so cant grumple on price i had a quick go earlier and managed to find babys heartbeat briefly twice, also had a listen to my own heartbeat for good measure lol

mslucy- dont think that people in there late 30's r classed as old mums in this generation, i felt so so young when i had my DD but infact i was the average age which i wud have never guessed

sesame- thats lovely that u both got to hear heartbeat, hope all goes well at your 16wk check

zinnia- ouch a block urethra (sp?) that sounds painful, sorry youve been feeling unwell i hope u start to feel better soon

mummyw- wot a lovely pic, much more angelic that my skeleton face pic lol

sorry if i have missed anyone, waves to all, and passes round some imaginary chocolate cake, were pg were allowed hehe

cowboylover- wow thats great 3stone i have put on 7 kilos since previous pg noticed on my notes at hosp the otha day

tiredandgrumpy- feeling no flutters here either altho its still early days dont think i felt them till afta 18 wks with DD

gingerwench- so sorry your still feeling so ill that sucks, is there anything that makes u feel any better i found the fizzy drinks helped me

loopy- did u manage to book in scan, ooh even im excited for u to find out lol

MummyWilliams · 24/11/2010 20:09

ginger hope you feel much better soon. Sounds really rotten.

loopy not worrying now, was a bit at first. But hearing everyone elses side has made me feel at ease. So when's the date set for? I'm mega excited to hear.

DMC everyone has been mentioning the Angel doppler, I think jbells managed to buy it from Amazon for £20 - sounds like an absolute bargain. I tend to feel movements more in the late afternoon and evening, there is a definate pattern. I think when you are on the move you don't feel it so much at this stage. Someone recommended lying in the fetal position, this can make the baby move because it feels a bit squashed. If you are worried, get to your Midwife. I had a fall down the stairs on Saturday and was terrified, but luckily was booked in with Midwife on the Monday and everything was ok. Also baby is still buried low down, at 16 weeks the top of your uterus is just under your belly button - I think that's right anyway Hmm

mslucy I will be turning 40, 5 weeks after this little one is due. You are not alone. Bear

jbells I hope your head cold shifts soon. Have you tried steaming? And can I be greedy and have an extra large piece of that chocolate cake - feeling greedy and hungry Grin

mmm! chomp! chomp!

16+4 Smile
