Hello everyone
lovely to hear from everyone although I am so I can't reply individually.

Congratulations to you crazydayz for twins!

I had my first scan today (private nuchal). My NHS dating scan is on Monday. I measured 12+5 today which would put due date earlier at 13 May rather than 16 May but will see what the NHS one says before I change my stats. Nuchal results will be back on Monday however am feeling positive since measurement was 1.8mm and the sonographer said she got a perfect view so that is encouraging.

It was brilliant to see proof that I'm not just a lard bucket and there is a waving little falafel (my name for this bump) in there. Relieved not twins since already have DS. Relieved to tell people at work who have since said "we thought you were looking pale and ill". Looking forward to telling the rest of the family tonight too although very closest know already

cowboylover · 03/11/2010 13:41

Congratulations crazydayz for twins!

I have been feeling rough all day and all feeling like its a litle to much to take sometimes! Someone at work who I usually can ignore for her usual rude style made me cry yesterday and got totally stressed out so im glad I got work from home day today but dreading tomorrow already! I know the baby is long time way but I feel like I have lost all focus and control sometimes.

I have another scan on Tuesday so really looking forward to seeing my little wiggler again and hopefully how much it has grown in 3 weeks.

valz · 03/11/2010 14:23

Hi Ladies,

crazy thats is great news, i think your the first twin pregnancy on the thread, ive 15mo twin boys and they are great. is this your first pregnancy?

jbells totally shocked at how your birth went, any wonder you are left traumatised.

I live in the north of ireland and just wondered if the service here is much different from england having read some of your stories. at my local hospital your husband or whoever you wish can stay with you on the maternity ward right through til the labour ward. i have known them to send ladies home for a while although when my waters broke, when they checked me i was 3cms, they sent me onto labour ward when i got there i was 5cms, i had planned on getting the epidural which i did and worked brilliantly, here when you ask for epidural they automatically put in a catheter cuz obviously there is no way you can control the bladder. both babys were head first but the first twin was facing the wrong way so after pushing for a hour and nothing moving i was taken to theatre where i was given an episiotomy, forceps was used for the first twin and 20mins later the second arrived with help of the vacuum. during a conversation about the birth about 3 months ago my husband mentioned that when my first boy was born the second turned to breach, this i was shocked to learn as i was totally unaware of this, to which my husband said sure thats y it took 20min because the consultant had to turn him, i never felt any of this...thanks to the epidural of course. i was tender below for a week or so but nothing stingy or uncomfortable, i actually couldnt even find my sticthes when i looked for them so much so i had my sis and hubby have a look, they couldnt see them either. the consultant i was under is said to be one of the best at that hospital, i really do hope i am under him for this pregnancy.

I am a little more nervous this time as i know with a twin pregnancy you get treated a little more caustiously which is y i was probably sent to labour ward straight away and didnt suffer too much before i had an epidural on board. also just wondered is the epidural not readily available over there or do most of you just choose to go with the gas and air as a prefernce? at my hospital the epidural has only just been made available 24hrs, it used to be 9-5 hours weekdays, although it was available 24hr to mothers of multiples because there is a higher risk of needing emergency cs.

my scan is at 5.45 this evening, ive never known a day to go soooo slow, i just cant wait, i really should be working as the boys are having there nap but my mind is just babies at the mo. will log in later let yous know how it went.

HotButteredToast · 03/11/2010 15:25

crazydayz that's wonderful news! Well done. Do twins run in the family or was this a happy accident?

I've got my GD test tomorrow. No food from 9pm this eve, which means no tea and toast first thing tomorrow. Argh! I'm envisioning food-deprived grumpiness already, rather than a zen like ascetic state.

First blood test at 9am followed by a bottle of Lucozade. This will be rough beyond words as I always associate the stuff with particularly virulent hangovers or food poisoning. There's nothing better for replacing all those missing salts. Bleh.

Then at 11am it'll be the next blood test to see how I'm coping. Cross fingers it's nothing but we'll see. Has anyone else gone through the GD test yet?

valz I watched a series on BBC recently called 'Special Deliveries', all about a maternity unit in... ermmm... I think it was Ulster. The set up there seemed really caring. Good luck with your scan this arvo.

HotButteredToast · 03/11/2010 16:18

Loopmumsy I shouldn't be GD prone as there's no history in the family nor do I tick any of the boxes that would suggest possible GD. However, I was horribly ill with a fever a couple of weeks ago and the blood tests from that indicated odd sugar levels and the liver doing dodgy things (one too many shandies in the past perchance?) so the doctor just wants to be sure.
Unless three decades of mainlining jam doughnuts are about to come up and bite me on the arse. Oy vey...

thell · 03/11/2010 17:08

Congratulations Crazy!
My friend had twins, but very hot on the heels of her first baby - the husband looked utterly shell-shocked for the whole of the pregnancy!

HBT....mmm, toast with butter! And shandy...

DontWorryBaby · 03/11/2010 17:35

Crazy congratulations! I'm a twin - I've got a twin brother who is eleven minutes younger than me. I think twins are fab but I didn't have to parent us so it's easy for me to say. I'm sure you'll do brilliantly! Smile Oh, and make sure you put your feet up & look after yourself!

jbells · 03/11/2010 18:20

hey everyone

thanks for all your replies, i am thinking long and hard about my decision between natural birth and cs , but got lots of months to think atleast, to be honest its not as much the birth that im frightened of but more the afta effects, everybody warns u about the labour but no one tells u about trying to go to the toilet with stitches and wot u will feel like downbelow afta lol, think its bcos i still dont feel completely back to normal and that my stitches still hurt at times and still during sex that puts me off natural more, sorry for TMI

crazy- wow congrats u must be overwhelmed, i always wanted to have twins first time round not sure id manage with a 2 year old and then twins tho hehe

qwerty- ive watched all the mini films on that link b4 now there so fascinating to see

pistatio- go for it mat clothes r much comfier, i havnt bought enuf yet, seems that my belly has got a bit smaller this week mayb i was holding a lot of water b4 or maybe its pyschological bcos im not as far along as i originally thought lol

hotbuttered- its weird how u miss food when u know u cant have it, i get very grumpy if im too hungry

valz- wow considering u had 2 your birth went very well :) one shud be a doddle this time lol i think where i am u can have the epi at anytime

i have been so wingy today and yest crying at everything, anything small that goes wrong is making me cry, i even cried watching masterchef last nite lol

MummyWilliams · 03/11/2010 18:30

Crazy fantastic news! Double congratulations. So as you name suggests crazydayz ahead Wink

cowboylover don't be down on yourself. It is hard to stay focused. I can't be bothered with anything lately. The house is a mess and I can't be bothered to go to work (which is bad because I work for myself so no working means no money).

loopy gosh! all those different roles you have. I always say at the end of a day at work, right its off to do the other job (be mum)! You have so many hats, I wouldn't know whether I was coming or going. Hats off to you!

pistachio hennes (H&M) do nice mat clothes.

Hotbutter good luck with test tomorrow, sounds like a right affair!

jbells your birth story sounds horrific. I know its really hard and very easy for me to say, but no two pregnancies are the same and neither are two births. From someone who speaks of experience with having had two CS (one EM, one EL), what I wouldn't do to be able to have a vaginal delivery. Having a CS is hard on the body for a very long time, not to mention the minimum 3 day stay in hospital. Yes there are risks too! But also you have a lifetime scar which forms thick scar tissue, which leaves you with a mummy tummy shelf.

iheart thinking of you, hope you aren't too bored and are bearing up.

thell glad you are feeling better. The nausea keeps getting me at times, I'm 13+4 today.

I ended up at the doctors yesterday, this cold/flu/chest thing has really got me. I've had it for 1 week 3 days. Anyway doctor says i've got a chest infection, so am currently taking antibiotics.

xxx

Phew! Just caught up on 3 pages of chat!!! What a lot has been going on, so sorry if I miss anybody out...

Bizzeebee Hello and welcome (belatedly, as everyone else has already said that!)

Iheart Jeez, that was one nasty hospital visit by the sounds of it, how are you coping with the resting up? Amazing and wonderful that the baby was still all ok. Keep resting as much as you are able to.

Jbells, MrsLucy & Zinnia Sorry you're all feeling poorly, I seem to remember with DD I had one awful bout of flu at about 12 weeks and then wasn't ill again until I stopped bf when she was about 6 months. So hopefully you'll all feel better soon and be good and well for the rest of your pregnancy cos it sucks not to be able to take anything to make you feel better - paracetamol just doesn't cut it!

Jbells and Qwerty I have been feeling quite lonely during the daytime as I don't have many friends with children - and the ones that do work full time so I hardly see them. I am living in the area DH grew up in and it's a little village so I need to make the effort to get involved in village life a bit more. It's hard though cos I'm a bit shy with new people and would rather sit in a corner until they come and talk to me! So if you come up with any top tips on meeting new mums let me know!

Tinwe Tiredness has just lifted for me at 14 weeks so fingers crossed for you. BUT I do sleep for an hour during the day if at all possible and it really helps. Re napping at work, we were lucky enough to have a car park at the office, so I'd just go down to my car, recline the seat and sleep for 45 mins. Would then go and eat lunch whilst I worked at my desk. Wouldn't have lasted without it and I remember driving home during the last couple of weeks before maternity leave feeling like I wouldn't stay awake for the hour drive. It was awful!

Mummywilliams and DMC Think I may have been feeling movement too but yes, could possibly have been wind. Sure it's too early though?? I suppose MummyW if this is your 5th you'd know when you felt the movement Grin

Re Cravings I fancy eating anything that someone else has cooked!! lol, although many things are tasting odd these days. Is anyone else being a bit lazy with feeding their other children? I mean, I do feed her but have been quite boring with repetitive meals as just tired by dinner time and a little sick too.

Crazydayz BIG Congratulations on twins - what a shock though!!!! If these are your first you'll cope as you won't know any different I suppose. Best of luck with the pg, hope you have lots of people around you who can help when you get too big to move and after they're born.

Anyone else getting a daily dose of headache? Mine turns up around 11am and stays until about 3pm. Paracetamol is not helping.

Who have I missed???

runningmonkey · 03/11/2010 19:24

Wow crazy what fabulous news. Congratulations! My friend had a 20 week scan the other day and was kept waiting a long time because apparently the scan before was a discovery of twins and the Dad fainted :o

jbells that sounds like a horrendous experience. I hope you have a much better time this time around.

Big hello to everyone else, am not supposed to be here. should be planning lessons for tomorrow

sesamesmith · 03/11/2010 21:42

Yehay! Rang today to see if we could get get a cancellation appointment for the nuchal scan, and success - all done! 5 days further on than thought, due date May 12th, all looking good. Can't believe how the little thing was jumping around - wow! Just awaiting blood tests, so cross fingers...

Crazydays that's fab - 2 for the price of one, how exciting!

Good luck to all you good people :)

kiwigirlinlondon · 03/11/2010 21:49

congratulations crazydayz - that's so exciting!

Loopymumsy - thanks for letting me know that you thought having a doula was worthwhile. I read about it in a book I got out of the library which I'd totally recommend for anyone (especially first-time mums) wanting advice about how to have a successful birth, what actually happens etc:
Blooming Birth: How to get the pregnancy and birth you want

fijibaby · 04/11/2010 01:55

Hello everyone, belated welcome and big waves to the newbies!

Tinwe thank you for the concern re: headache... it's still there but comes and goes particularly when I stand up/bend over, still getting partial blacking out when I get out of bed so thinking it is just normal pregnancy stuff! That and the crushing tiredness and constant nausea... I'm just a bundle of laughs at the moment! Grin

Very Envy of Mslucy, Double Deckers are my favourite but are not available in NZ let alone Fiji, always stock up on them whenever I get back to the UK but as noted by jbells and hotbuttered it is the things you can't have that you miss the most. On that note hummous is a banned substance for pregnant women according NZ food safety... something about tahini that they suggest you avoid and I LOVE hummous. Grrrr.

Qwerty thank you for the link to the animation it is lovely although I had visions of my baby looking cuter and rounder rather than quite so much like an alien!

Congratulations on your twins Crazydayz. My mum is a twin and so are my brother and sister (14months younger than me). Mum claims she doesn't remember much about us as babies because she was far too busy to think about anything but I'm sure you will be fantastic. Good luck! Smile

MummyWilliams hope the antibios kick your chest infection into touch quickly, it doesn't sound like too much fun at the moment.

southpacific my poor deprived cherub is making do with cold spaghetti out of the tin, and bless him he loves it!

Off for a little lie down, lovely!

JBells your first birth experience sounds awful, you poor thing. Re the build up to the delivery, is there a midwife led birthing unit you could go to? That's where I had DS and I had my own room with DH with me throughout, which was very reassuring. I would have absolutely panicked if he'd had to leave me. I realise that doesn't help with the after effects- surely your stitches shouldn't still be hurting? Have you had a MW have a look at them?

Loopy and Zinnia - I am ever so slightly Richard Armitage obsesssed too - though am very upset by the latest plot developments, not least because it seems to mean he is leaving Sad. There was a fanastic thread in AIBU recently about RA, with loads of MNers admitting to a huge crush, which was hilarious, recommended reading! Also recommended viewing here: (sorry for the slightly over enthusiastic side-track here Grin) (apologies if the link doesn't come out properly, I've never tried to post a link on MN before, any tips gratefully received!)

MummyW hard luck on the chest infection. Have the antibiotics started kicking in yet? Hope you're feeling a bit better.

Southpacific yes I'm getting a headache almost daily too. Paracetemol does normally shift mine though - hard luck that it doesn't for you. I'm not sure if my headaches are pregnancy or stress related though - I went back to work on Monday after being signed off for three weeks - was ok on Monday, but by Tuesday lunchtime, felt completely overwhelmed, stressed and tearful again. Probably didn't help that no one at work (HR or any of my bosses) had bothered to come and see me for a chat and to see how I was and how they could help with my workload, despite them knowing I'd been signed off with stress/exhaustion and possible AND. It's a very caring place... I developed a headache on Tuesday which only left yesterday evening, so I think mine are certainly at least partly work stress.

Congratulations to Crazy! Running monkey, I can't believe they missed your friends' twins until the 20 week scan! I think I might faint if that happened to me Shock

loopy I'd be interested in borrowing your book if that's ok?

valz · 04/11/2010 12:40

Hi Ladies

Scan went well, due date May 13th, all midwife led this time, wee baby wriggling and bouncing about. couldnt believe it when midwife told me i get the big scan at 20 weeks then thats it til my due date...i knew scans werent as often with a singleton pregnancy but i didnt know it was possibly only 2 throughout the whole pregnancy, she did mention they use the doppler but i luv the scans so much!! i asked her was it due to cut backs and midwifes not having the time for scans, she said no it was because they dont like doing unnecessary scans because thats unnecessary rays on the baby....such a load of sh*te!! Just wondering are you all on the same boat, r the scans as scarce in your hospital too? im just concerend a little becasue surely a scan every now and then can make sure babys in good position and at no risk ie position of umbilical cord etc. Anyone feel the same as me or am i just moaning?! anyways i told her i would go to my gp midwife for all my appointments to avoid the wait in hospital which im quite pleased about!

Rollercoasteryears · 04/11/2010 12:57

Hi Valz, glad your scan went well. I only get two scans (at 12 and 20 weeks) too - and it was the same last time, which was my first pregnancy. That was in London and I'm now in Hertfordshire, so I've always assumed that's the norm and have been quite surprised to find out from this thread that some people have a scan at about 8 weeks. I did end up having another scan at about 36 or 37 weeks last time, but only because the MW thought DS was transverse and the consultant needed to double check. In fact, I also paid privately for a nuchal fold scan last time and also for a 4D scan at about 28 weeks, so I had 5 in total, though 2 was clearly the norm.

If anyone is interested, I highly recommend the 4D scan experience - it's basically like watching a video of your baby in the womb, and you get photos of it too - so exciting! (But not cheap - think it's about £150 round here)

southpacificfish · 04/11/2010 13:47

Rollercoaster We got lucky first time round with the 4d scan as the consultant was playing with the machine whilst the normal operator was on holiday! yay free 4d scan at 20 weeks, it really was very cool!! pleased paracetamol shifts your headaches and stress definitely makes them worse - although I'm a SAHM, I still have my DH and BIL's (separate companies) bookkeeping, invoicing and VAT returns to do, and that usually makes my headache worse! Hope you get a bit more sympathy and understanding from those at work.

Fiji I think tahini is made from peanuts which is probably why it's banned...

Loopy yes good advice re water intake. Am trying to drink more and more now that I'm not constantly weeing!! I don't drink tea or coffee ever so it is only water that passes my lips but probably only 3 pints a day and I could do with a little more.

Oh and I seem to be addicted to quavers! Have just had a cheese, ham and red onion toastie for lunch and think it may have been a mistake. All I can taste now is onion. Hmm
