The old thread was getting quite full so I took the liberty of starting a new one, I hope nobody minds! I thought I'd keep in with our glowing and growing theme (I'm not very creative, sorry).

OP posts:

Do they let you have baths in hospital I wonder [hhmm] ? Actually, I'm not sure if they even have baths in hospitals as I've never really stayed in hospital before Blush....Hmm, I'm now imagining some kind of school style joint shower room in hospitals to try and save the NHS money.

Crumble sounds good please needtosleep [hgrin]

Absolutely shattered this afternoon after having to teach all on my own for the first time in yonks as supply lady helping me out was off ill.

On the subject of cheap nappies being as good as/better than the pricey stuff, it reminded me that DH and I use Tesco value dishwasher powder, not because we're cheap scates (well, I speak for myself anyway!) but because it really is the best dishwasher detergent we've found after trying nearly every one available out there. The fact it's cheap is just an added excitement [hgrin]

Have had lots of snowy pictures in the garden etc I took from big snow fall earlier this year printed and am now putting them into blank photo cards ready to send as christmas etc cards :)

SlaughteredSheep · 20/10/2010 15:57

Wiggles, please don't tell me that your DD2 was 2lbs bigger than your DD1! DD was 8lbs 7.5 and I am not having a 10 and a half pound baby .

Zero, it's entirely up to you. I intended to use cotton wool and water at first as it's kinder to the skin but we had some wipes which I ended up using all the time as water doesn't tend to get rid of the poo smell as effectively. Also the meconium is hard to get off with just cotton wool and water (think tar like substance).

angels1 · 20/10/2010 16:03

Blush what on earth is meconium slaughtered ? eek, I'm feeling so naive today Confused

SlaughteredSheep · 20/10/2010 16:07

Angels, in my hospital they had a private bath in the delivery suite and then a communal shower on the ward. There was one between 4, it was one bathroom with toilet and no one else could get in if you were using it. The MW made me have a bath, in the delivery suite, as soon as I'd given birth (i would have had one anyway but she was rather insistent) and then I had a shower the next day. I'd recommend taking some flip flops, or something, for the showers as they don't get cleaned between each person using them. I think they let you baths in labour too, if you want to.

SlaughteredSheep · 20/10/2010 16:10

Meconium is the baby's first poo. It's a blackish-green in colour so don't be shocked when you change the first nappy, it's supposed to look like that! It looks a bit like tar and it's really sticky. It can last the first few poos, I think and then it changes to a lovely yellow colour - bleurgh!!!!

angels1 · 20/10/2010 16:15

ah slaughtered so that's why they always talk about new mums being obsessed with baby poo - clearly there's more to it than meets the eye!!

hornedtoadjennyp · 20/10/2010 17:08

My dd was 6lbs 4 and my ds was 8lbs 9 and I am also scared that this little one will be enormous! [halloween scared emoticon]

knittakid · 20/10/2010 17:14

wriggles, it was needtozzz who made the crumble, but can I come too please? that sounds amazing and has really made me hungry now.

needtozzz that's exactly the kind of thing that'd happen to me, so no pool for me.

Has anybody used reusable nappies? how much work are they? any fav. brands?

Feel so behind most of you! I've only got a couple of outer-layers of clothing and nothing in the way of furniture/big stuff.

Has anybody used one of those little chairs, rockers I think they are called? We can't decide what to get for sleeping/being during the day (i'm hopping babies are like kittens, lots of sleep? am I being optimistic?)

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 20/10/2010 17:39

We used reusables with DS but then had broken washing machine for first five or six months of DD's life and never got back into them. Vaguely planning to do them this time, though. In terms of recommendations, depends very much on you and your lifestyle. How would you prioritize between cost, ease, eco-friendliness? Do you plan to tumble-dry regularly, occasionally or not at all? How much drying space do you have? How often do you plan to wash a nappy load?

EauRouge · 20/10/2010 17:40

Yes, if you are planning to use washable nappies then wait until the meconium's all gone! DH ended up with some on his jeans and it never came out Grin

knitta I use the tots bots nappies but the tots bots wraps are rubbish. The motherease ones are much better.

Do you mean the bouncy chair things? DD loved hers but I don't think they are meant to sleep in them for long periods of time. We got a moses basket stand that had rockers on which was lovely but DD ended up sleeping on me a lot of the time Grin

jackinthebump · 20/10/2010 17:49

Wow, lots of talk on nappies! Hadn't really though too much about that yet!

Off to the baby show at Earls Court on Sat with SIL, just discovered there is planned maintenance on the tube!!! Do they wait until something is on to do this or what?! Confused

americanexpat · 20/10/2010 17:52

knittakid - I've only just today bought some vests and have nothing else except the hat I knitted. It still seems "too early" to do much but I know I'll be saying that until I'm in labour!

Had a look at sleeping options at Mothercare as well. There's absolutely no way we'll fit a cotbed in our bedroom, so that leaves a crib or moses basket. Any opinions on either? Will the moses basket be big enough to go beyond six months? Maybe this is a stupid question but does the baby need to sleep in the same room as me all the time, even for naps?

wigglesrock · 20/10/2010 18:18

Sorry if I started a crumble riot!! If Mr Wiggles wasn't working tonight he'd be enroute to shops right now!! I used a moses basket for dds, dd1 was fine in it until about 4 months or so, dd2 only briefly used it 8 weeks or so, she didn't like it. We couldn't fit a cot of any description in our old bedroom, so when they outgrew the moses basket dds went into their own room. Well dd1 did, dd2 would only ever sleep with company, 3 years down the line not much has changed [hwink]

Knittakid dd1 was like a kitten, brillant sleeper, seriously there were times when I felt like wakening her for a bit of company but I remembered my mum squealing "never wake a sleeping baby" I paid for my smugness with dd2 Blush

Angels there were 3 bathrooms with baths in my maternity ward with 4 other shower rooms, seriously the midwives were constantly trying to get you in the bath. There were then 2 other baths beside delivery rooms, favourite bit of having dd2 was having a lovely bath after delivery while Mr Wiggles held her.

SlaughteredSheep · 20/10/2010 18:30

Knitta, we had a Linkadoos infant to toddler rocker for DD, it's in the attic now but we will be using it again. The one that we have is from birth to three years, similar to a bouncy chair but the bouncy chairs only last until they can sit up. DD used to sleep all the time and used to spend a lot of time in hers, as someone else said though they're not supposed to sleep in them too often as they're meant to be able to lie flat.

We have a Moses basket too but they don't seem to fit in them long!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 20/10/2010 19:28

Doubt Moses basket would last beyond three months tops, TBH.

ledkr · 20/10/2010 20:14

jack im there Friday with dd am looking forward to it.I think the moses lasted me a bit longer than 3 months but mine are quite diddy. I did see some bigger ones online when i googled moses baskets but they were a bit more expensive.
DD is out with the brownies and dh is at work just had a great big bath for ages which was lovely and really helped with my aches and pains.
Annoying colleague update Is refusingto help with the office pack up and move as she is pg. She actually said this to me as i sat there with my 8.5 sheets of toilet roll tummy. She also said she is finding it hard to walk far when i was chatting to another person about my spd stopping me walking far.

I have booked my leave woopie.Mat leave will start on the day of my section as i had leave to take so i can have a nice long time off. Thats if i have ajob after all the cuts.

wigglesrock · 20/10/2010 20:23

Great you've leave etc organised Ledkr - gives you something to aim for (not that I'm workshy). I don't know how you are holding your tongue with work colleague - you're a better woman than I Grin

ledkr · 20/10/2010 20:32

ooo yeah it feels all real now. Its a great time of year for a baby. I had dd in Jan too. It goes so quickly as its xmas and then the countdown. I didnt hold my tongue today tho when she yet again commented on my tea consumption. I said well maybe you should try it i certainly seem to be the healthier one. Could hear titters all over the office. She also questioned why i wasnt breast feeding today(she of course will breeze through it)i expalined that i had no boobs. Always gets them that one. Grin i know i am wicked but i didnt suffer all that not to use it occasionally hehe

wigglesrock · 20/10/2010 21:06

I know, can't believe how quickly this pregnancy is going, dd1 was born in June and dd2 in October and they dragged a little.

I finish work on Christmas Eve but have 2 weekends off in November (I work Fri, Sat, Mon and 1 night) so not that far away [hgrin]

smallblackflowers · 20/10/2010 21:10

ledkr sounds like your annoying colleague has a few psychological problems!!

Well, I've just bitten the bullet and spent £339 on a new pushchair....my last one was 2nd hand, and I never liked it that much - planning to ebay it when I get around to finding all the bits and pieces! DH was out of work from when DD was born until about 3 weeks ago, so am celebrating having some cash flow again, and a bit of retail therapy helped to cheer me up after a crappy day - found out that I didn't get the promotion that I went for and that the person who got it (IMO) is massively inferior skills-wise, but as a man is obviously not up the duff.....cynical, moi...

Keep meaning to get the toilet paper out for a measuring session, but always forget until I'm back on the sofa with my laptop. Maybe next week.

My DD didn't really sleep anywhere but on me or in a sling during the day, briefly tried a moses basket and bouncy chair but she wasn't keen, and I wasn't one to let her cry when I could easily make her happy. No back rod was created, as she has slept through the night in her own cot since about 7 1/2 months, and is a happy, confident little girl.

SlaughteredSheep · 20/10/2010 21:14

Ooh that woman is a PITA! What fucking business of hers is it, why you BF or not? Angry nosy cow! Tell her to eff off! .

I can't believe how quickly it's going either! DD was June too and I actually wanted another summer baby just because I imagine the sleepless nights being a bit easier when it's warm! But I have to say that I'm really glad it's Feb as Feb can be so depressing, so it will be nice to have a new baby to look forward to! [hsmile]

angels1 · 21/10/2010 09:12

ledkr grrrr at your pg colluegue Angry .

Hope needtosleep enjoyed all the tasty home cooking last night [hgrin]

I can't believe how early sleeping is getting uncomfy - I thought it would just be a late third trimester thing Shock . I woke up last night with horrible pelvic type pain - really made me feel for those of you with SPD, it must be so debillitating. Also, have noticed over the past few nights that I think I could be, ahem, leaking a little wee at night Blush . I haven't yet worked out if it's wee or discharge (as I do seem to have quite a bit of discharge in mornings now) but there's a definite moist feeling with the occasional slight leaking sensation. Is anyone else going to admit if they have ever had this? Or is it just me?

I keep getting the ocassional 'oh. my. goodness. I'm actually pregnant arn't I' moments, and have now started getting 'what am I doing, my life will never ever be the same again am I sure this is the right thing' moments. Which is quite scary, especially as this baby was very planned and wanted. I'm hoping this is just normal thoughts, as I get lots of 'oh, how exciting, can't wait' moments too... [hhmm]

Grannyapple · 21/10/2010 09:38

Morning ladies! angels I am so with u on the random
moments of realisation that this is it!! This baby was v much planned for us too-kinda of hit me today again as it's our 10 yr wedding anniversary today, so we've got the day off together. Going to fifteen for a spot of lunch ( think I might eat the WHOLE menu as I am sooo hungry)-hit me last night that this'll
be our last anniversary without kids-may not be so much of the selfish lunches from
now on in!!

Eh, I have lots of discharge..have done since the beginning. MW said perfectly normal...tho I do too fund it a bit annoying in the morning waking up to the ahem moistness!

Hope everyone has a lovely Thursday.....nearly end if the week, woo hoo!

americanexpat · 21/10/2010 11:41

I had a lovely post composed then problems with the site lost it. [hsad]

If a Moses basket will last only 3 months, will a crib last closer to 6 months? We could possibly fit a cot in our bedroom if we chuck out half the furniture (crib might require getting rid of 1/4 of the furniture). Is it really so horrible to put them in their own room before 6 months?

angels - I still have moments where I wonder if having a baby is a good idea, this baby was completely planned and it took us nearly a year to conceive. Logically I know it's what I want and the right time for it, but it's bloody terrifying thinking about how much our lives are going to change. Like it's suddenly hit me I'm actually an adult. [hgrin]

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 21/10/2010 11:48

Sorry i've been away from the old laptop, have friends staying with a 13 week old baby...OMG! We are in for a shock.

I love the name Noah but DH voted it. Likewise my DH is a fuss pot. However it's come up with some odd names which has surprised me

Girls names sorted, final last words [hsmile]
Honor - Top Runner
Beatrice/x (DH likes Bibi/Bebe but I've said she will need a proper name for CV's etc. But very annoying it's becoming very well used.
Iona
Isla
Claudia (love it, but it means 'lame')
Charlotte

Boys: Mmmmm poo we can't agree?
Kit - (the brave choice) but I think the short first name works well with our long surname. Hate Christopher and know nn can be Kit.
Hamish - Trying very hard to win over DH with a Scottish name.
Lawrence - Just quite like it.
Hugh - Already have one in the family.
Jamie - The only one we both agree on (ie both like) but it's just a bit well..blaaaa!

What do you all think??? Gosh am I opening a can of worms here! xx
