The old thread was getting quite full so I took the liberty of starting a new one, I hope nobody minds! I thought I'd keep in with our glowing and growing theme (I'm not very creative, sorry).

TPT- I am 7.5 sheets, bigger than I thought! My belly button is starting to shrink too. Good luck to all those having scans today.

knittakid · 05/10/2010 10:27

TPT - 7, also bigger than I thought, was just thinking that if it was something embarrasing I would not post it (please take into account that I am a small person...)

I was just about to ask about washable nappies, prof, and those cheap ones don't irritate the skin any more than the natural fibers ones?

I'm glad (sorry) that those of you having scans today could not sleep, as mine is tomorrow and I could not sleep yesterday! Good luck today.

Wanderingsheep · 05/10/2010 10:51

Knittakid, I was actually thinking the same! I'm small too. In my last pregnancy I looked like a barrel with arms and legs by the end. My bump was huge and when you're small the baby doesn't have as much room so it seemed to stick out reeeeally really far!

Hello everyone,

Just come home from the scan and we're having a BOY! So happy!!!! When it came to scanning that particular area he was pointing at his bits so we couldn't miss them!

He was wriggling about a lot and kicking and at one point he grabbed the cord and looked as if he was singing into a microphone.

Just a slight problem (trying to tell myself it's nothing major but bit frightened) in that they could only find his left kidney so I'm going back up the hospital this afternoon for another scan with the consultant. The sonographer was lovely and said that it really isn't an issue if he only has one but can't help but worry.

We were given 6 photos instead of 3, hee hee!!!! Smile

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 05/10/2010 11:10

Fuzzi Bunz are a pocket nappy and are definitely not cheap Grin but as a pocket nappy you can stuff them with whatever you want (the insides don't come in contact with the skin). The inside layer of FB is a lightweight fleece, so still manmade fibre, but doesn't normally irritate the skin (in fact, plenty of people who use natural fibre nappies use fleece liners as fleece wicks moisture away from the skin quickly).

There are pros and cons to every type of washable nappy but, TBH, if drying time and space is a serious issue for you you pretty much have to go for manmade fibres (although possibly prefolds or old-fashioned terry squares would work on the basis of opening out flat, but even then would take longer to dry than the microfibre equivalent). Hemp and bamboo, for example, can be lovely (and hemp is v absorbant in terms of how much fluid it absorbs, although it doesn't absorb very quickly so is often better used with a top layer of something that does absorb quickly) but both of them take forever to dry.

Hello....! Haven't been active on MN's for a wee while. HD and I have justed moved house, it's been a nightmare. But just so delighted that we will be settle and sorted for baby in Feb.

20 weeks scan next week, but i've got to move from UCH to C&W. Should I just wait for a new appointment at C&W or just keep my 20 week scan...? Need to get a new GP, however don't have anything yet with my name and new address on it. Could that weeks at this rate.

I was also thinking about washable nappy so it's been good info...!

:)

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 05/10/2010 11:43

Also what are people views on finding out the sex..at 20 weeks.

Part of me would like to know, however the other part of me knows I won't be able to keep my big gob shut.... xx

wigglesrock · 05/10/2010 11:47

Hi all, just to let any eager shoppers know that M&S started a sale today, there are quite a few baby clothes on offer, especially if you know if its a boy or girl (Pah my pesky hospital doesn't tell you!!). Assuming the sale is UK wide and not just where I am!!

Need to sleep Good luck with scan this afternoon, thinking of you and baby boy!!!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 05/10/2010 12:13

I'd keep your original scan date.

We will be finding out (in one week exactly!); I am no good with suspense. And will be telling people (assuming they ask). First time round we vaguely intended to find out but not tell, but that resolution lasted about five minutes.

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 05/10/2010 12:42

I'm in 1 week too...! It's so exciting.

I'm like you rubbish with suspense, in fact it might be better if they just said, Yes everything is fine.

Let us know how you get on? -)

angels1 · 05/10/2010 13:17

Good to hear good scan news Grin. I too have got mine a week today :)

Does anyone know much about hypnobirthing/going to try it? I've been reading about it and it seems something I might try (and I have nothing to lose I don't think). Don't want to do a whole course but would like to read a book or two and see a bit more about what it's about. Looked up books on amazon but not really sure which one to go for - anyone got any suggestions? Infact, anyone got ANY good suggestions on a birthing book which won't scare the bejeezers out out of like my 'what to expect' one does?

EauRouge · 05/10/2010 13:44

angels, I did the Marie Mongan course and it was very relaxing and interesting but not sure it really prepared me for the birth in a physical or medical way (although emotionally it helped).

I am going to read Ina May Gaskin's book, I need to read a childbirth book for my LLL training and it's meant to be a good one. I think it's quite anti-pain relief but I am more than willing to ignore that part Grin but information on a natural birth I think gives you more faith in your body's abilities. Having said that, there's massive luck element when it comes to natural birth, there's a thread about it in the childbirth forum. So if it doesn't happen for you then don't spend months beating yourself up like I did.

angels1 · 05/10/2010 13:51

thanks eaurouge I'm also ignoring any anti-pain relief comments Wink but just think it would be useful to try and get my brain thinking a bit more positively about the whole birth experience (rather than the terror I currently feel) and see what sort of things I can try to calm me down a bit/feel like I can cope emotionally. I am very mindful that things might go a bit Confused Shock at the time and that I'm expecting to be desperate for any pain relief going, but would be nice to feel emotionally prepared.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 05/10/2010 14:04

I did a hypnobirthing course before DS's birth. It didn't "work" for us in anything approaching the headline sense (partly because with circumstances DH and I didn't really get a chance to practice outside the course, and then he got sent home from hospital overnight when I was in early labour so we never really got it established) but I still found it useful overall -- I think you have hit the nail on the head with the "feel like I can cope emotionally" thing. Some of the mental techniques I used in labour with DD and they were useful then too.

I probably have a book somewhere I could post you (but if you'd seen my flat you'd realise that "somewhere" covers a multitude of possibilities).

angels1 · 05/10/2010 14:28

thanks prof. If it's the Ina May one I've just got it on amazon Blush . If it's another one and you bump into it in your I'm sure not too disorganised flat (it's all those slings you must have taking up all the space is it?!) then that'd be great Grin

Am patiently awaiting delivery arrival of new online purchase (announces proudly) of a maternity coat. Hope it fits OK and doesn't make me look too hippo-ish Hmm . I got fed up with feeling wet and cold and my old coat won't get close to covering me up.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 05/10/2010 14:29

I'm pretty sure it's the Marie Mongan one. I know it's blue... that should help me find it...

NeedToSleepZZZ · 05/10/2010 16:03

I'm going to get the Ina May one soon and download the hypnobirthing stuff, hope there aren't too many whale noises etc as it might not have the desired effect on me if so Grin

Just returned from second scan of the day and we had a 3D one on the NHS as they needed to check his kidney was working well enough and it is so we've been told not to worry Hmm. If anyone has any experience of life with one kidney then please tell me I'm being ridiculous!

Can't wait to hear other scan stories now, fingers crossed for everyone x

knittakid · 05/10/2010 17:21

Thanks prof for the advice, is there a way in which I could keep your posts and re-read them when I need them Smile, they are all so packed with info you should write a book!

needtosleep Don't worry, there must be things that you'll be told to look after, but people donate them and lead normal lives, don't they? sorry don't actually have any concrete info.

Sorry to bring this up, but have just told DH about toilet paper tuesday and he does not think all brands are the same length... but then he is a cynic like that. Should we meassure them and prove him wrong? mine are 5" long.

Wanderingsheep · 05/10/2010 17:49

NeedToSleep, I don't know much about kidneys (well, in fact I know nowt) but I know someone who was born with only one that worked, iirc she was born with 2 one was didn't function at all and was tiny. Her normal functioning kidney had grown to twice the size to compensate and had two tubes! She has lead a normal, healthy life and only found out about having one proper kidney when she was pregnant (she's 40ish I think, so born before they did ultrasounds). She was prone to UTIs but only because of the none functioning kidney so it has since been removed, so no problems at all now!

Wanderingsheep · 05/10/2010 18:03

Sorry, what I said was sooo long winded wasn't it, lol! Basically, I know a woman who has one kidney - she's perfectly healthy! Congrats on your little boy! Smile

JaneDoe, congratulations on your little girl!

Eight and three quarters!

wigglesrock · 05/10/2010 21:12

Hiya everyone, well I bought first baby thing today Grin Ran to Asda to get some bits and pieces and realised the baby event was on, got Tommee Tippee microwave steriliser for £10!! They are also doing the Tommee Tippee steam steriliser for £20, I used it before and was really pleased with it.

need to sleep I know a beautiful boy (9) with one functioning kidney - he is happy, healthy, fun and very very very noisy!!!Wink

Good luck to all tomorrows scanees(?????)

earlgreyismynectar · 05/10/2010 21:21

Knittakid I'll measure toilet paper when I remember where the tape measure might be, however we only have one roll left so will be buying the usual Andrex next time (pretty sure this isn't Andrex, DP bought it)!! It's reassuring to hear other people's measurements! Yay we're all about the same!

needtosleep, congrats on your boy! I don't know anything about this but sure we can all get by on one as others are saying! An ex boyfriend of mine only found out well into his 30s that he had "horseshoe kidney's" on the back of a scan, was no big deal & he was none the wiser! Try not to worry about it x

eaurouge I came across the name Ina May Gaskin when I came across a little known fact (or let's say taboo) of sexual stimulation as a form of pain relief during labour! She advocated this and spoke really positively of it being a natural form of pain relief! Admittedly not the easiest thing to achieve in an NHS hospital setting!!! Lol! Anyone else heard of this?!
Anyone tell me a little more of Ina May Gaskin? I'd be
interested to read more of her.

Congrats on scan results those of you who just had them!

Wanderingsheep · 05/10/2010 21:22

What other bargains do they have, Wiggles? We don't tend to go to Asda as Tesco is nearer but we got the Tommee Tippee steam steriliser on offer at Tesco!
