No news here too!
SamB Hope you feel better after some sleep.
Hermya Cake sounds good! I'm eating anything I want at the moment and not worrying, I figure that I'm gonna need these calories soon. Grin

40+5 today! I've got my sweep appointment at 1pm so if it goes well I could be in labour by tonight! I've heard mixed reports about it hurting or not, but I'm ready now to try it. I think the idea of being induced at the weekend and not being able to have my water birth scares me more than the pain of a sweep. Wish me luck! Smile x

shieldbug · 18/10/2010 11:57

Good luck Vikks. When I had a sweep last week, it was strange (there's lots of pressure!) but it didn't hurt at all. I think it only hurts if your cervix isn't ready for it. Since mine was soft (apparently) it was fine to go ahead. I reckon at 40+5, yours must be ready by now, so it'll be painless. It was over really quickly too. In terms of whether it works or not, there's a 50% chance that you will go into labour within 48 hours. Obviously I was in the wrong 50%, so I hope you have better luck!

nymphadora · 18/10/2010 12:15

SamB will hope for labour rather than bug for you as at least there will be a positive outcome then

hermya don't forget to leave your phone at home if you go out.Wink

vikks good luck :)

NinthWave · 18/10/2010 12:18

Hello all, just a quick message as I'm typing with an armful of snuggly newborn goodness :)

I went in to be induced on Friday (40+2, induced due to big baby and previous shoulder dystocia) and my gorgeous baby son Reuben was born at 11:16 pm on Sat weigning 10lb 6oz Shock!

Natural delivery, had an epidural but due to two amazing midwives I don't have so much as a graze...was back home by lunchtime yesterday and feel brilliant, if totally sleep-deprived!

Lots of love and luck to you all, will catch up soon XXX

Xavielli · 18/10/2010 13:01

Vikks Good luck with the sleep

Ninth HUGE congratulations on your HUGE baby :o He sounds just perfect and the midwives must have been brilliant!

SamB I hope the clearout isn't making you too miserable and you are able to get some fuel into your body before labour really kicks off.

Xavielli · 18/10/2010 13:01

Sleep? haha sweep*

nymphadora · 18/10/2010 13:07

Congrats on your very full armful Grin

SamanthaB123 · 18/10/2010 13:11

Congratulations Ninthwave! Wow, your baby was enormous - well done you!

Vikks My midwife said that if the sweep worked it would take 48 hours. It stimulates your body to make prostinglandin (I think) which takes a couple of days. Sometimes though just being prodded about can get a labour that was ready to go, going.

Hermya I am jealous of you going out to get cake. I can't get off the sofa and dairy is out just in case it is a bug. Will you eat a massive slice for me please?

Much the same here although haven't been to the loo for six hours now which is good. Rally hungry but don't feel like any foods. Or if I do they all contain dairy. I do feel better for sleeping all morning, but haven't tried standing up so it could go either way.

SamanthaB123 · 18/10/2010 13:13

Ooh - who's starting the new thread? I'm rubbish at that kind of thing!

NinthWave · 18/10/2010 13:23

Right, I've farmed him off onto DH so wanted to come back and witter a bit more at you all :)

For anyone worried about induction - mine was absolutely fine. I did need more pain relief than I thought I would - had diamorphine and an epidural in the end - but they took the whole thing slowly at my request, didn't push me into any intervention/monitoring I didn't want, and just really looked after me.

I had 2 lots of Prostin gel, which was enough to get me to 3cm dilated - had loads of practice contractions for the last week or so which were helping things along though I didn't know it!

Waters were broken at 10:30am on Saturday, and I was set up in a labour room where I got to 5cm just with breathing/hypnotherapy techniques. The contractions were weird 'double' ones, coming one on top of the other and then a break for 5 mins, apparently normal for induced labour. Had some gas & air but needed something more once I reached about 7cm, so had diamorphine which was brilliant for helping me concantrate/not let the pain take over me. After an hour or so of that, I asked for epidural as I just had a 'feeling' I'd need it, despite being dead against it up until the day Blush

Got it 2.5 hours later, and it really helped me. I had to go on the drip/be monitored so couldn't be active, but TBH all I wanted to do was kneel on the bed anyway. My pushing had to be totally guided by the midwife/me watching for a contraction on the monitor, but once I worked out which muscles to use, it was easy progress - lots of pressure but no pain.

I felt him descend and felt him crown - had the 'ring of fire' but was so incredibly calm that I just sat still and waited for the next contraction...he had the cord round his neck, but the MW lifted him through it and I felt his body be born onto the bed in front of me, so I looked down and saw all 10.6lbs of him and it was an amazing moment, I'll remember it forever, so so different from my DS being yanked out of me with lights on and alarms going off.

He had to have some help breathing as the cord had been quite tight but APGARs were 6 and 10, so all OK. He shouted at us for a good 10 minutes before settling for his first feed, and he's been on and off the breast ever since, doing really well.

I never, ever thought I'd have anything good to say about an induction or epidural, but I honestly couldn't have hoped for a better birth experience. My pelvic floor is normal, no pain, no stitches or tears, nothing. I'm in shock a bit!

I really feel like Reuben's birth has healed a lot of scary memories from DS1's birth (search my name if you want to see my old threads abut it). DS1 came into the room this morning and said "Look, it's my baby!" which made me all teary, bless him Grin

Sorry for essay but I hope my birth story can reassure anyone else who's nervous about induction/pain relief etc.

NinthWave · 18/10/2010 13:24

Oh and thankyou all for the good wishes, I couldn't get on MN from hospital but the 'good luck' vibes must have worked Wink

nymphadora · 18/10/2010 13:29

Fab story ninth I'm filling up again :)

nymphadora · 18/10/2010 13:52

If anyone was planning on buying a playmat for Xmas or just because ELC have a good offer on here

shieldbug · 18/10/2010 13:55

ninthwave congratulations! Welcome Reuben! Wow- what a size! Thank you so much for sharing your birth story- induction does sound scary, so it's good to hear positive things.

SamB Poor you- I really hope this is the start of labour and not just a stomach bug.

Nothing really happening here. Sproglet keeps pushing down hard as though he/she wants to be born, but my body isn't cooperating. I may have had a couple of mild contractions, but that's hardly significant. I suppose the consolation is that those of us who are left are contenders for 20/10/2010!

Hermya321 · 18/10/2010 14:04

Ninthwave Wow, well done you!!! Thank you for the positive induction story.

SamB You poor thing, you haven't had it easy have you.

Shield I'll race ya!!! Grin

Cake was nice, although I've eaten far too much of the stuff. I'm now eating fruit and yogurt to try and make myself feel better. I've been out to the supermarket and bought some really easy meals for the next few days. I have a feeling I'm going to be feeling lazy.

Hermya321 · 18/10/2010 14:09

I did a new thread for us all.

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 18/10/2010 14:41

Ninthwave-congratulations and welcome Reuben :) so pleased your birth has healed some bad memories - what a relief :)

We're doing well, just been signed off by mw as I have one fat contented baby - 11lbs over birth weight already !!!!

AbFabT · 18/10/2010 15:15

Well done, 9th, and congratulations on the arrival of the huge Reuben. Ouch, what a size!

FT, I've picked up a few herbal teas that say specifically for nursing mums, just from my local health food store. Or nettle and fennel are widely available, and meant to b good too.
