Welcome in ladygonegaga, don't worry you're in good company - alot of queue jumpers around here. Not me of course... congratulations. how you feeling in these early days. Here have some monster munch and a sick bag.

okie you'd better not be going anywhere in September/October!!! FFFFFFUUUUCCCCCKKKKK how did I get to be 3rd on the not list?

reggie woo hoo, finally you're back. Now stop working and start skivving (and shopping). I am happy to say I have nearly everything ticked off list apart from large knickers and nighties/pjs. Oh and home birth sheets and pool.

cab never turned up this morning (yay) so working from home. Mr Moo had put up one of the 2 desks for our study so I am sitting at that, bouncing on ball and basically annoying him. Tis great.

VoilaAnotherGimlet · 07/09/2010 10:57

Hooray Box! Hope you are ok!

reginaMonologue · 07/09/2010 10:59

moomoo Oh how I wish I could stop working, but it's the working that lets me spend the money! Grin.

I am glad you have made progress on your purchases, I am sadly trailing in your wake of expenditure. I think I have almost everything, but I do need birth sheets, maternity pads and that kinda thing. I also have to brave Ikea at some point... Did you make a decision the breast pump / sterilizer in the end? I'm still in a quandary as to what to do about it because I don't even know if the breast will work iyswim. I'd hate to buy something only then to have to take it back. I also have to start my box of baby toiletries and grooming accessories, and of course medicines. Anyone got advice on those things?

Back to work for me... not made easy when you're just realising you may have eaten something dodgy the night before.... good job the bog is only 10 paces away.

SkiHorseWonAWean · 07/09/2010 11:07

reggie Calpol is universally recognised - but actually can't be used until they're 2 months old (first lot of injections) - on saying that we've still not needed it. We did get some colic medicine which you could use from birth which I did use - in retrospect I needed to burp him better, not chuck meds down his neck.

You can rent a medela hospital pump from the trust/hospital for pennies. For baby toiletries I got a starter kit from Burt's Bees to figure out what was wanted and what wasn't. I also have a manicure kit which I use to snip the end of his fingers with alarming regularity. Blush Also a comb & brush set which I've not yet used. His hair is 2" long but is so soft doesn't need brushing...

TwinkleToes76 · 07/09/2010 11:50

Another one???!!! Huge congrats Boxy, hope the big push was ok!

rollerbaby · 07/09/2010 12:18

reg I have borrowed a pump from friend, but had already bought the steriliser from M&P in their sale... Doula then told me that she has pumps etc so not to worry about that - so am glad I didn't fork out. It's not obviously definite that I'll want to or be able to express (according to her - I have every plan to pump and dump!).

I bought infacol in mothercare the other day (is that for colic?) and also got sudocrem and zinc barrier cream. Apart from that just scissors, flannel, comb, baby oil, nappies, wipes etc. Have bought pampers and huggies newborn and will try both on before we then go out and buy loads. Not sure if this is best, but FFS everywhere sells nappies so should be ok?

On maternity pads have bought mothercare with wings and also kotex nighttime which are apparently v good. Plus have puppy pads and waterproof towelling sheet to protect our new bed!

ChoChoSan · 07/09/2010 13:29

Wow, anuvver baby...congrats, boxter!

LadyGoneGaga · 07/09/2010 14:53

honeymoo Thanks for the welcome. No need to pump and dump though. Handily, booze just clears the breastmilk in same time frame as it leaves the blood and pumping won't clear it any faster. You won't want to pump drunk, trust me! If boobies get too full you can just hand express a bit to make more comfortable. But a pump is useful IF you can get baybee to take a bottle. Mine would until about 6 weeks when he refused point blank and I was left with bags and bags of painstakingly expressed milk in the freezer wondering what to do with it.

At risk of sounding bossy on products, this is what I found in case it helps. I had soo many products that I didn't use and took up space:

Do not buy talc - you can't use it on them anyway as clogs the lungs up. You need wipes (for when a few weeks old), loads of cotton wool before, baby bath, baby shampoo, baby lotion as you prob find they are a bit dry when new born (or you can use olive oil if bothered about chemicals), sudocrem and that's pretty much it for toiletries. When really little not meant to use bath/shampoo as bit too harsh but I like the way it makes em smell as long as not got sensitive skin! Don't use Asda stuff as it smells really strongly of lanolin and chemicals.

You can give Calpol at 2 months and Nurofen at 4 months I think. Seems a long way away but you will pleased you have it in ready. Do invest in an ear thermometer. Mine was a fancy one that plays a tune to make themn happy you have stuck something in their ear and then reads out the temp. Which is useful when doing it in the dark I promise!

Also little scissors - you get ones for babies that are blunt as fingers are so tiny you will worry about chopping them off (yes, really). In fact I bit my son's nails for weeks as too scared to go near him with scissors.

I still have boxes of breastpads that I never used as never leaked once in 2+years of breastfeeding. Aalthough friends used to leak copiously so worth having one box in in case. You will be amazed at how much blood comes out in the first couple fo days. I uused proper maternity pads, changing every hour or so at times. Not sure sanitary towels will hack it.

rollerbaby · 07/09/2010 15:04

ooh thanks for shopping list! A friend of mine said sudocrem only for rashes and barrier cream the rest of the time... is tha right?

Ear thermometer sounds like good idea actually. Have got a normal one and a dummy one from Avent, but I guess no good if their asleep. Or is tha likely? If they have a temperature probably crying!

LadyGoneGaga · 07/09/2010 15:39

Dunno, I never tried t'other types of thermometer. They are mostly crying when have a temp but at some point they will fall asleep and then you will be convinced they will succumb to fever in their sleep and not sleep a wink yourself. But mine belts out a tune which isn't really conducive to sleep!

I used sudocrem on rashes, some people use it as a barrier cream all the time though. DS wasn't rashy v often so I didn't routinely use a barrier cream and his bottom didn't fall off (AND we used cloth nappies). Camomile tea is good as a soothing wash when they have nappy rash by the way.

I just checked the list - you're third down now, aren't you. V exciting!

CluckyKate · 07/09/2010 16:17

Bum cream is a bit of trial and error I think - what works for some people doesn't always work for others. Metanium did the trick on nasty flare-ups but Bepanthum always worked best for DD.

Camomile tea is also good for eye infections - tip from my local chemist.

Nose unblocker for when they get really snotty & struggle to feed - you literally suck the stuff out to clear the blockage.

Calpol is always useful to have around - buy in sachets too to keep in your changing bag so you're never without.

Oh, and baby bonjela worked brilliantly when DD was teething. Some prefer teething granules - liek with nappy cream different things work with different babies so is a bit of trial and error.

An for you: piles of paracetamol & nurofen, haemarroid cream, tea tree oil, arnica for bruising and, of course, lansinoh nipple cream if you're breast feeding.

SkiHorseWonAWean · 07/09/2010 17:55

I haven't used any form of barrier or cream on Bear's bum since about 10 days old. No rash, no problems.

I use Burt's Bees dusting powder which is talc free.

reginaMonologue · 07/09/2010 18:01

Thanks all for your tips and advice, the list it appears isn't nearly as big as I thought it may have been which is a relief! With that lot bought I should be 95% of the way there, hurrah!

moo I did read some shocking reviews for the pampers newborn on MN, apparently they've changed the design but probably not in a good way... I think I'll plump for the huggies as they seem to get a good rating. Like you say though, not like nappies are rare, our supermarket has a whole aisle devoted to them!

rollerbaby · 07/09/2010 18:11

Guys just back from GP 32 week antenatal visit. I'm measuring 5 weeks over what I should -i.e. 37 weeks. In a total panic about size of baby etc, or something more serious? I've got to see MW and scan later this week probably, but since my fucking mw office is like getting through to the pope I have no idea when they will call me back or see me. Someone tell me to stop panicking will you???

MrsFC · 07/09/2010 18:11

Have you added lanisohl to your list? I found it saved my poor dry, cracked nipples!

It's so exciting that you are getting so close! I still can't quite believe it will be me doing all this in December!

SkiHorseWonAWean · 07/09/2010 18:40

honey did they test your wee/bloods for sugar? Is there any reason to suspect gestational diabetes? My sister was born at 37 weeks and weighed in at nearly 12 lbs. If this is any possibility then go to the chemist tomorrow and get the pharmacist to check on the spot.

OkieCokie · 07/09/2010 20:15

I am back in the country and officially grounded! Yipeeee! Boss man wanted me to travel again next week but I refused. He is now coming to me. Ha!

Welcome Gaga nice to have you around! You are most welcome here.

I must add on the baby oil thing that I found normal Olive Oil tis the best for dry peely skin and cradle cap - you can buy special baby olive oil but normal household stuff is also fine.

Products! I have a bit to say on this as I have tried lots! Mini Okie has eczema (which is food related so is managed by diet) and I didn't use any product on him or in the bath for ages. I now use Weleda hair and body wash www.weleda.co.uk/baby/icat/baby/ which I have found very gentle and good. Like Ski said Burts Bees is also tres good. I still don't use any product in the bath. I occasionally use pure potions skin salve and nappy salve here which is very gentle too. I really do prefer natural stuff where poss due to sensitive nature of skin.

this apparently is also very good (the orange tube) for nappy rash. I too have used metanium for one very bad case of nappy rash and it cleared it up pretty quickly.
I have since discovered nappy rash only really occurs when poo mixes with wee so if you are vigilant at nappy changing when there is a poo then you should remain relatively nappy rash free. Tis also best to dry completely in all the nooks and crannies to prevent soreness...
Anyway, still excited about all the baby news! Wish Skates was on t'other place as would love to see pics!!

SilverSky · 07/09/2010 20:45

Go boxerbird !!!!!! Amazing! Three bubbas in the space of a few days. Haz seen piccie on fb and he is anuvver gorgeous creature so he is! Great name too. Congratulations to the red head bunch that iz the boxer family!!!

Casserole · 07/09/2010 20:50

Lanisoh cream for sore nipples. Is just the best thing ever. And you don't have to wipe it off before feeding like with some others.

If you DO find your boobs leak lots, lanisoh breast pads were the only ones that worked for me. Others just leaked. But I did leak a lot. If you don't leak, or only a tiny bit, then others would probably do.

I don't use anything on Onepot's bum as standard. If he's a bit sore a day of sudocrem usually does it. I also use it on eczema he gets now and then behind his knees. If that doesn't clear it up, then Metanium does, but he's only ever had bad nappy rash when teething.

SilverSky · 07/09/2010 21:42

Beg your pardon! Welcome LadyLaLa - only nutcases polite gin sippers are welcome here and you sound like a very suitable PESH candidate !!

Gals - I do believe that you can get Lanisoh on prescription so costs not a dollar!!!

Casserole · 07/09/2010 22:09

CAN YOU???

Why did no-one tell me that before?

Although actually I only bought one tube of it - one tube lasts FOREVER. I still have some, use it for all sorts of sore skin type things!

SkiHorseWonAWean · 08/09/2010 07:19

Baybee lottery predictions as per moi.

  1. VAG - laydee baybee - overdue by 4 days
  2. honey - verrrrr impatient lady - will lay quickly with dog as unexpected "helper" (did anyone see the placenta? I'm sure she delivered the placenta. Have you checked in the bin? ... oh shite, where's the dog?)
  3. silver - loud birth heard throughout home counties and possibly to be heard by switty across the channel
  4. switty - panic labour - will give birth 20 minutes after silver
  5. okiecokie - 1 week overdue in a fucking lavender field with her little person doing an African dance of interpretation whilst wearing an organic cotton suit knitted by amazonion pygmies.
SkiHorseWonAWean · 08/09/2010 07:23

PS Fuck - I forgot reggie, she'll end me! Right, reggie will hang on until the last minute, but before okie. Unwilling to rely upon NHS drug management she'll have suspicious looking pieces of folded paper in her handbag in an almost hidden zip pocket - and as she trots along hozzie corridors she'll rattle as she clutches a mysterious bottle with a hand-written label stating "vitamins". Due to the aforementioned, will lay whilst doing the splits and hanging from the overhead spotlight to offend the NHS fat-busters.

Please to all go in to labour within days of each other leaving slightly cryptic messages here so as to whip us all in to a state of frenzy. Skater/cossie/boxer all far too sensible and without drama. Wink
