Hello all,

I just realised I put the 1000'th message on our last thread (uh oh, I think that's the limit), so in my Blush at not realising I'd reached the limit, thought I'd better start a new thread if anyone finds it.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Tallulah I can certainly put pics in of the finished nursery for inspiration if it would help! We have gone for a jungle theme, so lots of cute animal pics (which should look nice for a girl or boy!)

EauRouge · 27/09/2010 19:29

Ooh, are we talking nursery themes? Ours is going to be racing cars which is fine for a boy or girl because I'm the one that's a motor racing nut in our family Grin

Just been speaking to my mum on the phone and made the huge mistake of telling her our baby name preferences- cue long, awkward silence. She hates the boys name we like. :( After I got off the phone I burst into tears Blush Hmm Should have kept my mouth shut! DH had to reassure me that if we have a boy then he won't be bullied mercilessly for having a stupid name and that my mum's just a bit out of touch with baby names.

Wanderingsheep · 27/09/2010 19:53

Ignore other people's opinions of your names EauRouge. The names will grow on them once the baby is here! My mum didn't like DD's name when I was pg with her and kept trying to suggest alternatives. Now she likes it because she associates the name with DD!

We've decided on our name for a girl this time, which my mum loves but I can tell that MIL hates it. She'd never say anything though, I can just tell by her expression plus we have totally different taste in names!

Can't for the life of us think of a boys name though!

EauRouge · 27/09/2010 20:52

Thanks wanderingsheep, I'm sure it will grow on her but I'm still a bit hormonal upset. Mind you I think she is a bit picky, she doesn't like the name we've picked because it's 'too public schoolboy' and she doesn't like the name my SiL likes for her DS because it's 'too trendy'. Perhaps if I ever have a DC3 I should ask for a pre-approved list of dull acceptable names. Grin

hubbard86 · 27/09/2010 21:14

i had my gtt a few weeks ago and it was fine for now have another test at 26weeks which is when it showed up last time. Last time i had gd i was on increasing doses of insulin as blood sugars were not stabilising. Which is what led to the induction and now constant fear of another c section.

Having just moved house we haven't decided on a theme yet as we really want to find out if its pink or blue. I reckon i'm having a boy and have chosen a name which my grandparents don't like but i love so its tough. Going to be really stuck if its pink. Won't find out for another three weeks (19th oct) there is no way i could wait till the end to find out.

My ds has taken to kissing my tummy and saying baby (he's only 26months old) so its really cute, other than when he tries to do it in the middle of asda Blush

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 27/09/2010 21:26

Having been very hands-off on names for the last two, I think my mother is responding to this being our last by feeling it's her last chance to stick her oar in. I haven't told her what our most likely options are, but she's made a lot of forceful suggestions that I've had to tell her are not happening -- lovely names but I have an abiding principle that I want my DCs' names to be easily spellable when heard and easily pronounceable when read, and she likes very very Irish names, which emphatically do not qualify on either count. She feels that I should recognise my Irish heritage; I have pointed out that my actual Irish ancestors have without exception been called things like James, Archibald, Mary, Ann or Margaret, and I've used two of those already as middle names so I think I've done my duty by them...

zerominuszero · 28/09/2010 06:52

Hey everyone. I definitely advise keeping your names as close to your chest as possible, that's what we're doing. So much harder for an in law to object to a name when its attached to their grandchild! My mum wants me to wait until after the baby is born, then let my family get out the astrological charts and then tell me, when he or she is a few weeks old, which letter its name should begin with (it's an Indian thing... it's how my own name was chosen, I was called Baby until I was six weeks!). But I've told her it's not going to happen, especially as when we know the sex we'll pretty much pick a name there and then and stick with it (that's the plan, anyway). I think she'll come round eventually.

Mega back pain this week. It keeps me up at night a lot :(

suzym1984 · 28/09/2010 07:20

zero I am getting awful back pain that keeps me awake too! Been up since 3am today and now have to go to work Sad. I do sympathise with you! I have ordered one of those really long pillows to sleep with, will let u know how i get on.

Does anyone else also get rib pain? especially in one side, my ribs have been aching and that has also kept me up....very painful! Is this normal?

As for nursery, 2nd coat of paint is on and its looking fab! We re going to order some new carpet (nice thick squidgy carpet) and we have ordered a white cotbed. We are thinking of just getting drawers and wardrobe from Ikea or somewhere, as nursery range furniture is ridiculously expensive!

Have a good day everyone :-)

suzym1984 · 28/09/2010 07:20

hubbard mean to say....your ds sounds adorable!

janedoe25 · 28/09/2010 07:37

Good morning ladies, hope everone is well. Mil took us baby shopping yesterday we have picked out cot, changing table and pram. just need to save the pennies now!

suzym we are also going for the jungle theme for the nursery, cant wait to get started!

More excellent scan news i see, congrats everyone. I have mine next tuesday sooo excited! Hope everyone has a good day!

wigglesrock · 28/09/2010 08:52

Morning all, haven't been on in a few days, work a bit stressful and running the social life of a five year old took over!!

Having trouble in work with regard to them thinking I'm not entitled to annual leave while on maternity, their reasoning is that I'm on MA not SMP Hmm. Was on with Labour Relations Agency this am sorting it all out. I'm so annoyed not so much with my situation because I knew I'd sort it out but because I keep thinking how many other women have they told this to. It's a low paid manual job, absolutely raging grrr!!

But I have my 20 week scan tomorrow!!and am going to tell my 2 girls about the baby after it, so vvv excited.

americanexpat · 28/09/2010 09:16

We have the same name rules as the Prof but they apply both here and in America. We've tentatively settled on a first name, I mentioned it to my sister and could tell she wasn't thrilled with it. I imagine they will also be a bit Hmm when they find out the baby will have my surname as a second middle name (my compromise for him having DH's surname). Another reason to keep it to ourselves!

Is the GTT standard or only done after a + urine test?

40Weeks · 28/09/2010 10:47

Hello everyone! Been off the radar for a few days as have been very busy but hoping you are all well. Only read th last few posts - have also made the mistake of telling my Mum and Sis our preferred boys name and neither of them like it although have also stated its not down to them! Havent got a girls name but deffo think its a boy.

Prof my parents are irish too and my Mum always suggests Irish names but my sis has an Irish name and hated it as a child as no one could pronounce or spell it! She likes it now though as not too common but its been a long time coming!

Good luck wiggles I bet you cant wait to tell the girls, hope it all goes well. Grrr to work - its simple, being on maternity leave means NO BREAK in employment. Angry

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 28/09/2010 11:59

GTT is normally done if you have two or more risk factors (or repeated ++ urine tests, I think -- a single + can be down to what you ate just before the urine test, if not much time has passed, or abnormal blood sugar levels in your routine bloods). Risk factors are things like a high BMI, family history of diabetes, previous large baby.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 28/09/2010 12:20

Mind you, I have been surprised at the creative approaches I've encountered to spelling and pronouncing DD's name, which I had thought was pretty straightforward... Hmm

40Weeks · 28/09/2010 12:43

There's always one!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 28/09/2010 12:55

My mother wanted to give us all Irish names, but my father wasn't having any of it. Why she thinks that she can exorcise this frustration by putting pressure on me to do what she didn't, though, I don't know...

(although actually I do. There are loads of names I love but can't use for one reason or another, and I would love it if one of the DCs used them for grandchildren at some point in the (far, far distant) future. The difference is that I wouldn't say so, or at least not unless directly asked and even then only in a vague diffident suggestion sort of a way.)

knittakid · 28/09/2010 18:08

Hello all,
Feel for me, ladies, in this names discussion. I am southamerican, mum is venezuelan, dad is colombian, grandmother is spanish, DH is british. I very very much want a southamerican name (that means, a name in spanish that is used there, or a more indigenous name) since baby is going to have English surname/family/friends/tv/all except me.
All the names I like have lots of other connotations, either religious or things like that, and my family hate all the names I like, or DH has bad connotations to them, etc. I sincerely hope it is a boy, since we agree on ONE boy's name (me and DH, NOT my family) and we can't agree on girls' names.
I understand the 'foreign' name issue at school, but having worked in some, I didn't see any problems with that, perhaps it has changed in the past few years. And I don't give a damm that people don't know how to pronounce my name.
I had to stop thinking about it because everyone was making me mad; and will wait until the scan.

Oneof4 · 28/09/2010 20:18

My stepdaughters have taken to throwing as many names at me as they can think of. Current favourites are David ("you could call him Dave!") and Aliana. No, I've no idea either.

tadjennyp · 28/09/2010 22:01

I think Joaquin is a lovely name knitta (no Spanish heritage so couldn't use it myself) or something like Francisco so he could shorten it to Frank if he felt like it? Also Rafael is becoming more popular and easy to pronounce to boot! My dd wanted to call the little one Alvin as in Alvin and the chipmunks! Grin I vetoed that.

knittakid · 28/09/2010 22:55

Too many joaquins in my family (and an exboyfriend...) but thanks for the suggestions!
I'm just very fussy... Will wait until scan, otherwise would really go crazy.
Good night everyone!

EauRouge · 29/09/2010 11:20

Morning all! I have managed to get my scan date changed so my mum can look after DD, it's now on the 11th so another week to wait :-? but all the kicking that's going on is reassuring.

Hope everyone is well, loving the helpful name suggestions from other DCs Grin

angels1 · 29/09/2010 15:25

hello ladies - all a bit quiet here today.

eaurouge there's a few of us with scans on that week - mine's on the 12th and it's taking sooo long to get there Confused

Had my first lesson back at work today Grin managed OK but could feel I got through it on the adrenaline and am now resting on the sofa!

A query on baby clothes (this is bound to be obvious but I'm new to all this). I've seen sort of body vests for sale for babies - bit like an all in one baby grow but without the legs bit - do all babies have this under their babygrows or is it a summer vest thing? I'm planning on just buying a few all in one type outfits and cardi/jumper type things but I'm unsure as to whether I should be buying these vest things as well to go under the babygrow or if they wear a babygrow with nothing underneath. That's probably the worlds longest worded question for something that I'm sure I could have managed on one line if I thought about it.... Hmm

OP posts:
EauRouge · 29/09/2010 15:30

I was massively confused by baby clothing too. I used to have DD in a vest and baby gro inside the house and then put her in a cardie, coat or snowsuit depending on how cold it was outside. You can get romper suits for the summer that have short legs rather than no legs.

I would go for the vests as well, DD still wears them now under all her clothes. I usually try to get her long sleeved ones for the winter. Sometimes I just have her in a vest and trousers with no t shirt over the top.

That's a suitably long-winded answer to your question Grin
