RinnyX We're taking the car seat with us, hope to be in and out again asap, I dont 'do' hospitals

What sort of things, if anything, are people putting in their Birth Plans?

BloodyBorisKarloffTheBold · 26/10/2010 22:50

Evening all - just a quickie to let you know ELCS date has been confirmed as 5th November.

Excited and terrified in equal measures now.

Promise (honest guv) I will add some personals tomorrow, but am bursting for a wee (again) and doubt I'll have the energy to roll back downstairs again. Until the insomnia kicks in later tonight Grin

Rinnyx · 26/10/2010 23:00

Thanks Mibby I will make sure DP sticks it in the car when the time comes :)
I havnt done a birth plan, didnt do one with DD the only thing on my list is if DP wants to at the last moment cut the cord will they let him

Oh good luck Boris and how fab a bonfire night baby same as my DP Grin

bytheMoonlight · 26/10/2010 23:09

Lurker dropping in!

Congrats to all the new babies and their mums.

My birth plan (mainly based on experience with dd) will be:

  1. Must be active, I know I have to be monitored because of EMCS with dd but still need mobility.
  1. I want either dh to tell me the sex or to find out myself - with dd the antheistist blurted it out and I didn't realise until the time how much I had wanted dh to tell me.
  1. Skin to skin, something I missed out on with dd.
  1. Managed third stage.

I am so tired atm I don't know how I would cope with labour if it started now. I honestly can't remember the last time I had a good nights sleep. I'm due on Monday though so fingers crossed not long now!

Hope everyone is well Smile

llandb · 27/10/2010 00:56

Just popping (as it were) by to say hi :)

Pidgin · 27/10/2010 09:40

blondecat poor you. Sad Those online booking things are a nightmare.

Whose is the other new baby?!

Mibby my birth plan is:

  • want to use TENS, entonox, birthing pool, different positions etc - consider delivering in pool if available
  • want to avoid artifical induction if possible (i.e. syntocinon)
  • want to avoid epidural and injections unless necessary (can't have them anyway in the birth centre so would need to go to delivery ward for these)
  • want the baby delivered onto me for skin-to-skin
  • managed third stage Those are the basics - it's a bit optimistic as I'm sure I'll be screaming for drugs ten minutes in but hey ho, may as well look on the bright side!
Ebb · 27/10/2010 09:50

My birth plan is pretty simple:

  • Birthing pool if available
  • Would rather not have an epidural or pethidine
  • Skin to skin and baby to breast
  • managed 3rd stage

I think if you have a really detailed birth plan and things don't go to plan then you can end up feeling a bit cheated if that makes sense. Obviously put what is really important to you but sometimes things happen that can't be predicted and I think it's better to go in with a flexible mind set.

Moonlight I know what you mean about feeling too tired to go into labour. I told the midwife I was looking forward to having baby so I could get some sleep. She was a bit Hmm but I wake everytime I move because of spd or baby on my bladder so at least once baby has arrived, dp can take the children out so I can get 2 or 3 hrs uninterrupted.

Good luck Boris for your elcs.

Mibby · 27/10/2010 10:18

Thanks for those bythemoonlight, Pidgin and Ebb, mine is pretty similar, and simple, but was a bit worried it should be longer/ cover more possibilities etc

hmmSleep · 27/10/2010 10:18

My birth plan was:

Do whatever I scream ask for at the time, and do it quickly!

You should have seen the look I gave Dh when the gas and air pipe got tangled around the bed just as a contraction started and I couldn't pull it free, never seen him move so fast!

OP posts:
PrivetDancer · 27/10/2010 10:49

My birth plan (although it is currently only in my head) is:

I'd like to deliver at home but if you have any doubts / concerns, transfer me immediately, even if it's only a hunch. You don't have to justify it to me.
[can you sense my slight paranoia? :)]

Don't let the gas and air run out!

Natural 3rd stage - let cord stop pulsing before cutting if possible.

Don't tell us the sex, we'd like to look for ourselves.

Everything else I'll just see how it goes, but I'm happy to go with the flow.

Pidgin, I will have to leave it to the mum in question to announce the baby! I think I would be fairly annoyed if someone else did it for me :o

sarahbuff · 27/10/2010 11:10

ByTheMoonlight I would be gutted if I'd waited all that time to find out the sex and the anaesthetist was the one to tell us! Angry I told my DH I want him to tell me if he can see when midwife gives me baby as soon as he/she is born, and I'm hoping it'll be my own community midwife who delivers (planning a homebirth and she lives in my village so gave me her home number and said she'll come over if she's free, even if she's not on duty). She wrote in my notes that I want DH to check the sex, and I'm sure I'll mention it to whoever the midwife ends up being if it isn't mine...

sarahbuff · 27/10/2010 11:11

PrivetDancer, did your midwife have any issues with having a natural third stage at a homebirth? Mine said I can if I really want, but she seemed to feel much more comfortable with me having the injection. I did stress that I want the cord to stop pulsating before anyone comes anywhere near it with clamps and scissors! Grin

PrivetDancer · 27/10/2010 11:41

Hi sarahbuff - no issues with natural third stage at home, I don't think. If you're in the water they can't jab you at time of birth anyway, presumably? I mentioned that bit to mw already as I couldn't decide what to do (last time it took an hour to get placenta out), so wanted some advice. She just marked down that I hadn't decided yet and we'd discuss next time, but no implication that injection was preferred for homebirths. I'm quite confused about it all tbh, have seen some stuff that says complications / pph are more likely with injection and some that say the opposite.

Are you planning on having the jab after the cord has stopped pulsing then? as I think the injection has the same effect as clamping really.

Fenouille · 27/10/2010 14:09

Well, I have an appointment tomorrow (EDD) at the hospital at 11 to check everything's ok and to see if I can wait a little still or whether they will wait to induce me.

On the bathroom front DH and FIL finally laid the epoxy grouting in the shower yesterday after putting it off for weeks Angry having read loads of horror stories on the web and working themselves up into a total frenzy. It took then under an hour and it looks great I spent all last night trying not to say "I told you so." [hgrin]

The shower should go in tonight and the shower wall started, and assuming I'm not induced tomorrow, the wall should be finished tomorrow night with sink in on Friday. If not DH will be explaining to my Mum why she has to wash in the kitchen sink Grin And the plumber should be here on the 2nd Nov to fix the loo. As they keep you in for 4 days here as standard that could work quite well.

Your birth plans are all a lot less complex then mine Blush although the MW didn't pass too much comment on it (and highlighted in red the bit saying I wanted DH to announce the baby's sex). One thing that's not allowed here (France) though, according to her, is a natural 3rd stage due to high risk of haemorrhage. Although my friend who gave birth a few weeks ago in a different clinic didn't have the injection, so who knows?

Bassface · 27/10/2010 14:11

Hi everyone, can I ask what a managed/natural 3rd stage is? I'm guessing its how they deliver the placenta but what is the difference between the two?

Not officially written my birth plan yet but I am going to the birthing unit at my local hospital and hoping for a water birth with gas and air.

Would rather not have any intervention, but if me or the baby are struggling too much then do whatever it takes!

Got 2 weeks to go now and my bump has dropped even more meaning more lovely stretch marks down where my underwear elastic is Sad

They are very itchy and sore and I know I've not got long to go but it's sooooo annoying. In desperation, I have just applied Aftersun as Bio Oil and Cocoa Butter don't seem to be stopping the itching, and it seems to have worked!

blondecat · 27/10/2010 14:25

Boris Good luck on Bonfire day! Your baby will have fireworks for their birthday every year - how cool is that.
We still don't know what she's doing - had acupuncture and this afternoon it's time for the hypnobirthing protocol to turn baby but will only find out Friday if anything worked.
I am curious - were you offered an ECV - or was it not an option? I am not sure what to do if they tell me Monday I can have it. I'd rather not have to decide.

Privetdancer, BytheMoonlight, Ebb, Pidgin - thanks for sharing your plans. I think it's time to write mine even if we are not sure if it'll be a c section or not. I like the length - one lady from NCT has 4 pages of bullet points - somehow I think she may be a tad disappointed....

comtessa · 27/10/2010 14:27

Hello all, interesting to read all the birth plans.

So I've had some strange feelings over the last day or so. Yesterday evening DH and I were at the theatre and I couldn't concentrate on the second act (I was writing the review - hope I got enough detail - just checked online and no comments yet wondering what performance I was watching!) But I digress. It was a period pain-type feeling, constant and really aching, lower abdomen/groin and lower back. A warm bath sorted that out and slept okay, then feeling the same, on and off but not with any degree of regularity, today. So, all the signs are good that things are starting to progress in the right direction.

Time to write birthplan, methinks...

ICantGetMuchSleep · 27/10/2010 15:16

Sounds exciting comtessa. I had similar feelings the other weekend but then it had all stopped by Sunday. Have got 2 weeks left and just want little one to be here now!

Ebb · 27/10/2010 15:16

Bassface not sure whether I should be linking to rival sites but this probably explains it better than I can. Grin

3rdstage

I had a managed 3rd stage last time and was fine so will opt for that again.

Mibby · 27/10/2010 15:41

Ive got a similar achy feeling today comtessa, fingers crossed its 'something' :)

Pidgin · 27/10/2010 16:07

Ooh, sounds exciting comtessa and mibby! I had period pain type feeling last week but it seems to have stopped...

I am going for managed third stage due to risk of bleeding and because I think I'll just want to get it over by then, but at nct classes a natural third stage was promoted. I know someone who had a hemorrhage though which inclines me to the injection - although I appreciate others feel differently.

Hope your check up goes well tomorrow fenouille, exciting to be at edd!
