Hi All

This is the new thread taking over from "Feb 2011... Where only us and a select few know"

So sad that not everyone will be joining us on the new thread but here's looking to the future and hoping we start to see some lovely scans and good news from everyone in the next month

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Thanks Prof!

PDR · 02/08/2010 12:26

Ahhhh 29th Jan makes more sense! How great to be further along than you thought! I was also very late with my first so I might have to wait until March for this one to make an appearence!!!!!

Still waiting on NHS to call me with a date for the nuchal scan - might have to go privately me thinks....

Off to work in a bit so will be back then!

americanexpat · 02/08/2010 15:00

I'm 13+3 today, which I think officially puts me in the 2nd trimester? The tiredness seems to be easing a bit as well (touch wood).

I've not given much thought yet to when I'll be taking my maternity leave. I'm not keen on taking too much time before the baby is born, as I'd rather spend my leave with the baby rather than waiting for him/her (especially if I'm on the 42 weeks end of the spectrum). Is it reasonable to continue working until a week before my EDD? As it's my first, I've no idea how I'll be feeling.

ledkr · 02/08/2010 15:10

good thing about elective c section is can get the actual date in advance and make plans for pat leave and childcare and also i am hoping schedule the in laws visits. As i have mentioned before they live away and love to park themselves with us for visits and i have a fear that after my section i will come home to a house full and my few day old baby being commandeered. At the same time i am sympathetic to them wanting to see first g child asap..bit of a dilemma but first few days are so precious and have dd to consider.Would welcome your opinions girls.I mentioned it to dh and he was amazed that i even thought that would be the case and that "absolutely"they will not stay the first few nights home. Was relieved but still leaves the dilemma that Mum works in a school so only has weekends to come so depending on the date this could still mean only option is the weekend. Arghhh help. They are nice but dil is constantly wanting food "shall we get a take away? Are we having lunch,is there any more?"and its just the small talk when you cant be bothered with when just had a baby. Firts night home should be just us and fish n chips.haha

PDR · 02/08/2010 15:11

americanexpat I know a lot of friends and colleagues who have worked full time up until 2 weeks before their due date with their 1st so I do not think this is unrealistic... How flexible are your employers? Can you just carry on as long as you feel ok?

I am still soooo tired. Need some inspiraton on what foods might boost my energy levels?

I can no longer wear any of my normal trousers comfortably Have just placed an order for a few more maternity ones (ones with little side jersey panels seem to be better than ones with full band at this early stage). Have also got some shorts and linen crops for when we go "Down Under" in October as I suddenly thought that summer things might not be available then!

Still no call/letter from hosp re Nuchal Scan

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 02/08/2010 15:12

Could they stay in a B&B nearby rather than actually with you?

ledkr I was thinking the same as prof. I wouldn't expect to have to put anyone up (family included) in the very first weeks with new born so think you are completely reasonable in saying to them would they mind staying in a local hotel/b & b for a week end if they want to come. You'll be so tired/adjusting and the last thing you want is potential extra stress of having people stay.

americanexpat a work friend went on maternity leave last year and she planned to work up until a week before due date. She ended out leaving a few days earlier as she got too tired and was struggling (and tbh whenever I saw her teaching when I walked past her classroom in her last few weeks she was always sitting down looking shattered). I've also got a friend who left 5 weeks before due date as she was really struggling at work, so I guess it's all personal and depends on how you manage....which is hard to tell until you get to that point. Don't see why you can't tell work a week before your due date but if you're really struggling then start a bit earlier.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 02/08/2010 15:43

I intended to work up until a week or so before my due date with DS, but then worked out that with holiday built up etc. I could finish about a month beforehand. And when I got to that point I was so glad I wasn't still working.

I had a friend who went on maternity leave at 37 weeks thinking she'd have a good few weeks to potter around, meet friends for lunch and get things sorted out, but then had her baby the very next day after starting ML. She really seemed to miss out (especially as her baby was very ill and hospitalised for the first month so no chance to do much afterwards either).

PDR · 02/08/2010 16:03

I think if was sure I wouldn't have to work on Christmas Day then I might leave it until the 2nd week in January for my EDD of 16/02 so about 1 month prior.

But then again, I also have to take all my holidays before I go or I will lose them and as I get 6 weeks/yr and you cannot start maternity pay after your due date I think Wednesday 22nd December seems like a good plan

[Starts count down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]

ledkr · 02/08/2010 16:39

i am hoping to stay as long as poss within reason but am part time so easier.I have booked some training for jan as i thought that will be easier than working but yes you are right the a/l needs using too and i cant see the need to take any before xmas as i have 3 weeks off from next week.
Thanks for the comments on pils. Its nice to hear i am not being unreasonable.I am sure i am not the only one in this position as many people now live in different places to the parents. Its finding the happy medium between them seeing baby asap and not intruding upon those special few days. Must admit tho would feel awfull about them staying in b and b when i have sapre room very difficult.Hopefully birthdate will allow for either some hospital visits or a weekend which isnt in the immediate days following-and then i will still insist on only one night stay as dd will be off school and will want a look in too.
Has anyone been getting headaches?Mine seem almost daily at the moment and make me feels sick too.

DrMouse · 02/08/2010 16:55

Hello Everyone, this is only my 2nd post on this thread but I have been doing a lot of lurking :-)

Had 12 week scan on saturday all seems ok - nuchal measurement was 1.9 which I think is just above average. So need to wait for the results of the blood test and not do too much googling.

Had my boobs measured at M&S last week and they told me not to wear an underwired bra during pregnancy as it can block your milk ducts. They then gave me some very ugly non-underwired bras. Is this is what life is going to be like now??

Hormones going a bit mental too, had a cry in oxford street yesterday just because my boyfriend said my bump wasn't very big yet.

Ledr - think I am also going to have problems managing visitors after the birth but in my case will be very difficult to ask them to stay in a B&B. If you think os any good excuses let me know!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 02/08/2010 17:10

If you have a well-fitted underwired bra then you can get away with it, but on a better-safe-than-sorry basis they are best avoided (I am wearing underwired at the moment, but it's my third child so I'm feeling more lackadaisical and also I know by now that I'm not particularly prone to blocked ducts).

M&S are crap at non-underwired bras, really. There is more choice out there have a look at figleaves and you can filter down to non-underwired only. I really recommend Hot Milk for nursing/maternity bras several UK stockists have them although I'm not sure anyone carries all the styles in all the sizes. They come up a little big on back sizes, IMO, but seem pretty standard on cup sizes.

cler · 02/08/2010 17:22

I got to hear babas heartbeat today for the first time and there was a student midwife at first trying to find it and she was really digging into my tummy then my midwife had to take over. I have started to regain some of my energy back and im starting to feel normal again so hopefully it will stay that way and i will get to hear baba moving lots soon. I hope everyone is feeling well today.x

tadjennyp · 02/08/2010 17:22

Just lost an entire post - gutted!
Was saying that I left work 3 weeks before my EDD though had intended to stay an extra week. Could barely stand up in my classroom. Dd decided to come 5 days early so only had 2 1/2 weeks off! Here in Oregon there doesn't appear to be any statutory maternity leave so I've known people work up until the day the baby comes then go back to work 2 weeks later after taking their vacation time. I would barely have been able to stand, let alone do a 40 hour week!

I need to go and buy some maternity clothes soon. Fortunately I lost nearly 2 stone last year so have some clothes from my larger days that I can still get into! Do you think hot milk deliver overseas prof? My city is lovely but small and not the best for shopping.

tadjennyp · 02/08/2010 17:24

Sorry, missed your post cler - that's lovely news. Hearing the heartbeat is so special!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 02/08/2010 17:45

There's a shop that stocks them in Corvallis, if that's anywhere near you. And US online stockists are listed here.

Chloe55 · 02/08/2010 17:49

So sorry to worry you ladies - my scan went well, strong heartbeat woohoo! My cervix was bleeding when she did the internal so she wonders if this caused the bleeding. Apparantly it can be normal and is due to a shift in cells around that area. I ahven't been up for sex recently but starting to think poor dh has gone an awfully long time without it so was going to indulge but am worried now it will cause more bleeding and forgot to ask the doc if it was ok.

We booked a very last minute trip to HAven in Somerset and travelled down Monday afternoon straight from the scan so this is the first time I have had access to the internet. I contemplated finding an internet cafe to let you know it went ok but thought dh might think I was slightly mad if I said, 'must find the internet to let the faceless ladies on mn know our baby is ok'

ANyway, haven't fully been able to catch up but hope everything is ok with people.

PDR · 02/08/2010 18:00

Glad everything is ok Chloe! Hope you had a nice time on hols!

tadjenny at ladies taking 2 weeks holiday then going straight back to work! How would you even find childcare for such a small baby?! I know DS's nursery do not take LOs under 3 months old... maybe you'd get a nanny....
I know the maternity leave in Australia isn't very generous either as my friend there has just had to go back to work full time and her LO is only 3 months. Luckily her mum has come to live with them for 3 months to look after the baby so they have another 3 months before they need full-time childcare.

Sorry for so many long and boring posts... I am bored at work!!!!!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 02/08/2010 18:15

I think there's been some new legislation through in Australia so allowances there are improving -- there have been women discussing it on another board I'm on.

Chloe, great to hear from you! We were getting worried, but a last minute holiday sounds like just what you needed. A belated YAY on your scan results!

smallblackflowers · 02/08/2010 20:04

Hello all, not been on for a few days as DD has been pretty poorly and needing a lot of taking care of - she's had a very high temp now since Friday which we are managing with ibuprofen, but which warranted a trip to hospital on Saturday, will have to go back to the docs tomorrow if its still high in the morning.

Re mat leave, I was in such a bad state with SPD last time that I went off a month before my DD, but should have heeded my doctor and been signed off work for a good month before that. Will see how it goes this time, as time off before baby is nice but as the end of your mat leave approaches you'll wish you'd not had so much, as leaving them to return to work is agony.

Can't believe I'm in the second trimester now - it seems to have flown by and dragged at the same time! Am really pleased to say that I have actually felt good today - only sickly on one or two occasions and not tired at all - work must have thought that I was on the happy pills as I could almost have been considered to be bubbly today - not a word that I could have used to describe myself for the last 3 months

ledkr · 02/08/2010 20:24

Chloe how naughty to worry us glad you ok! Dr mouse. how about saying the mw or Dr said got to be quiet due to c section risk of bleeding blah blah blah. it really is a pain isn't it and that's just parents not even thought about sil and bIl and uncle tom cobbly n all everyone seems to think its reasonable not to have sleepovers but in theory hard to enforce without looking horrible. may set rules such as no staying for the first two nights and then after that only one night. apart from anything else it gets expensive! spent 45 quid over weekend on extra food for in laws and then extra washing bedding and everyone having showers! god I sound mean now as well as horrible!

tadjennyp · 03/08/2010 05:39

Thanks prof, Corvallis is just a two hour drive over the mountains so will head over before the snow sets in.

ledkr · 03/08/2010 07:14

Small black flowers..you just reminded me about spd which I had too! damn. We will prob get it again won't we? Last time I had osteopathy and acupuncture which worked well and I seemed to to better than some. ie wasn't on crutches and stayed at work. what was your experience of it and will we get it again do you know. ouch!

ledkr · 03/08/2010 07:18

Ooo by the way. Was lurking on recent threads last night and found Honeywitch and she had just done a positive test! woohoo eh? Thought you would like to know.
