Yo December 2010 ladies, here we go - the mid-point of our pregnancies...and beyond!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
GreenGeekGirl · 18/08/2010 21:20

I think people are right to be cautious about all sorts of potentially unnecessary medical interventions but there's a lot of bullshit scaremongering out there about vaccinations. I remember when the now totally discredited MMR scare was around and my many speech therapist friends (for some bizarre reason all my best friends are STs!), who work with kids with autism, were up in arms about how outrageously and obviously wrong that guys was ... and of course we all now know how wrong he was. It's also true that it's better for most kids to get the actual diseases as children to get the best immunity (as most of us probably did) rather than the less effective vaccinations. However, that won't work for the weakest kids who can't cope with the diseases. Now most kids are vaccinated you can't be sure yours will be exposed, leaving them vulnerable to getting the diseases as adults, which is really bloody nasty. Vaccination may not be the best specifically for your kid but it is best for kids in general. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Strix · 18/08/2010 21:22

I don't think there is much less to surprise us. We have a sex (boy!), a name, and now a birthdate. But, that's fine. I' not interested in a surprise. I like knowing what I have to look forward to.

We are moving house next week. After that I'll start buying some more baby stuff. Like that Bugaboo Bee I've been drooling over. Just have to decide between red and olive hoods.

DuelingFanjo · 18/08/2010 21:50

Gosh Chooster that's so unprofessional of your MIL's frined/workmate! Shock
I would be inclined to keep quiet if only to see if MIL slipped up and mentions the sex.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 18/08/2010 21:51

Just had my scan (I must be one of the last! I'm 21 weeks but waited a week because DH was at a conference until yesterday). We are having another boy! DS is very taken with the idea, but I think he would equally have been happy with a girl. I love little boys (because of DS) but always thought I'd have a daughter, so it feels rather bittersweet. But am coming round to the idea of another lovely little boy.

We're now fretting about names. We had a nightmare finding a name for DS that we both loved, and had a shortlist of two, literally! And I've gone off the other one now... Sad Decided we're NOT involving family members in baby name discussions, as it gets too fraught and you end up being influenced by what everyone else thinks.

Scan was fine, btw. Have been ok'd for a home birth in terms of fetal health and placenta placement! Smile DS2 (how odd to write that!) is measuring 2 wks above average measurements (had to explain to MIL that this did NOT mean he'd arrive two weeks early!) which is no problem, some babies have to be above average size. But he does have a fat tummy, and I've been booked in provisionally for a 36 wk growth scan, but am discussing it with my MW first and seeing how we feel. I last had my pee tested two and a half weeks ago, so I don't think I'm likely to have developed gestational diabetes in two weekks, badly enough to make a large baby! Still, I'm always worried about that...

(what would I do without my raspberry jam donuts? I only eat those during pregnancy!)

Seeing MW tomorrow for my next antenatal, anyway.

We will be vaccinating DS2 just as we did for DS1. It's never crossed my mind not to, TBH, and I also feel rather strongly that we ought to.

DuelingFanjo · 18/08/2010 22:24

Congratulations on a good scan Reshape Grin hopefully you won't have gestational diabetes.

Strix · 19/08/2010 08:18

I'm sorry. I probably should not have brought the vaccine debate here. If anyone wants to talk about vaccines, maybe it's better to come see me on Changes to baby vax programme -- necessary?...

On a less controversial note... is anyone up for another West London meet?

Lavita?
PJen?
Emmaxmas?
Anyone else?

I was thinking it would be nice to sit down and chat for a bit longer next time so maybe we could do a dinner out? Anywher in or around Twickenham, Richmond, Chiswick is good for me. Or, I'm also happy to go into London if that suits others. Maybe more people could join us if we did London.

DuelingFanjo · 19/08/2010 08:25

GOsh - no worries Strix, I am really interested in different views of Vaccinations as I am inclined to be on the 'wary about them side' but don't know exactly why, so any information I can get would be really helpful.

I'll take a look at that thread later :)

MrsSnaplegs · 19/08/2010 08:34

Wow DF wins prize for most inclusive post!

Reshape Good news on the scan - woo hoo another boy to add to the stats - they are starting to pick up in numbers - I still think they are going to be outnumbered by the girls in Dec 10!

Chooster That is a clear breach of the Caldicott Principles and the individual could be disciplined over it. I agree with DF - wait out and see if your MIL trips herself up. I would seriously be considering a complaint against the hospital worker even if she is friends with your MIL!

Strix I have to say I agree with you on the surprises front - in fact I am a nightmare at Xmas and Birthdays, at 37 I still go looking for my presentsGrin

However we will be vaccinating, as most have you have probably worked out my background is medical and I used to be a nurse (now a medical administrator but not for NHS!) and I feel quite strongly about the need for vaccinations, I have seen the effects of not vaccinating elements of the population and also the risks to those not vaccinated from an introduced infection. Outbreaks of things like Mumps in the teenage population because of lack of herd immunity and widespread vaccination in certain age groups can cause siginificant problems. The risks are far greater in not vaccinating I feel (personally) than in vaccinating - however that is not a professional recomendation in anyway and I think people should be free to choose. If it is just the multiple vaccines you do not want to use then look at the option of getting them done privately as individual vaccines, some clinincs will do it but it is expensive.

Aimee Hope you are ok - things move so fast on here a couple of pages flash by before you realise someone is MIA!

I have found a Wedding Gift for C*G and will be organisiing a collection later - the link is here (don't tell her!!) I thought this is a really useful present that all brides need!

Wedding Gift

Hope everyone has a good day!

rockinmum · 19/08/2010 09:17

Hiya.

We are due our DC2 on December 7th, don't know what we are having as apparently it is policy up here not to tell you?! And private scans cost too much on military wages lol.

Anyway hope everyone is well.

notso · 19/08/2010 09:34

Morning all, still not prepared for
V festival, got loads of shopping to do. We put the tent up last night and I found it hard work, hoping DH and our other friends will take over that and I will do the BBQ.

C&G Thankfully no not feeling ill with the infection. I went with the Bugaboo Cameleon in the end.

DF Mammoth post! I cried during the ceremony! BIL was still in school when DH and I got together and there he was looking all smart and shiny in his wedding suit!

japh Glad you are doing a little better with the SPD, I have just started swimming as my bum, hips and between the legs bones are very achy, what stroke do you do?

Wholelotta I'm still having a surprise! Even though I am quite an impatient person I loved DH telling me what we had with the other two, though I know what you mean by 'it'.

Maxpower What do you think you are having? or aren't you telling? I have a suspicion I may be having a girl.

Chooster I think thats awful of MILs friend, very unprofessional. I would be tempted to give subtle hints about having the opposite sex to MIL to see how she reacted.

Strix Olive gets my vote, I wish they did that colour for the cam. Can't beleive you have a name picked out already, it's an ongoing saga in this house.

Reshape Congratulations for the lovely scan and on a boy. I think it would be lovely to have two the same sex.
DD and DS are at a stage now where they have virtually nothing in common, and they tend to clash over everything.

MrsS Love the gift idea, don't know how I have got by without one all these years!Grin

Aimee hope to hear from you soon.

Baby is kicking like mad and stretching too, I keep feeling pressure on either side, when this happens and can feel definate head and foot type bumps. I have also been having lots of Braxton Hicks, I'd forgotten how they can take your breath away. 22 weeks today, seems to be moving quickly so far.

notso · 19/08/2010 09:37

Hello and congrats rockinmum, they have only recently changed policy here. I know what you mean about private scans being ££££!

Strix · 19/08/2010 09:56

I like the olive and I think it is least likely to show the dirt it will no doubt collect. However, I am big on "Safety First". I hate that schools ask everyone to buy black winter coats. Oh that's a good idea Hmm so we can all increase the chances of our children being run over by a car/bus/lorry/motorcycle in December when they are walking home in the dark. HmmHmm

So, I like red because it's nice and bright and will definitely be seen. However... I do like the olive and so might look into some reflective material I could have sewn onto the Bee in various high visibility spots.

I sound like a paranoid freak, don't I? Blush

japhrimel · 19/08/2010 10:21

notso - when I go swimming I usually start by doing a few lengths walking. Then I alternate between on my front doing breast-stroke arms but straight legs and on my back sculling or sometimes just kicking. I'm more comfy on my back in the pool but I'm concious that later on I'll want to be staying more on my front!

Does anyone know when we have to start thinking about positioning? I'm starting to get paranoid that my baby likes being upright so much she'll never engage. Hmm

She was head up and front yesterday and must've had her bum sticking into my back as I had back ache all day and my bump was a weird shape (she's usually more side to side). DH suggested getting on all fours on pillows to relieve the backache - baby definitely didn't like it when I fell on the pillows, but she moved thankfully!

Strix - you don't sound paranoid at all. But then I was brought up by a very very safety conscious Mum, so stuff like reflective material on prams just makes sense to me. Guess I'll be sewing some on too. Reflective strips will be more effective with traffic at night than red IMO. I think we're getting a black pram so I definitely need to add something. Why on earth isn't it standard to have reflective strips on prams????

We've chosen a name too (Zoe - shhh Wink) but we're asking close family not to spread it around in case we change our minds.

GreenGeekGirl · 19/08/2010 10:54

Supposed to be working on a masters assignment today but couldn't resist a sneaky peak. Almost fell off my chair laughing at your link MrsS - very good >

Strix No I don't think it was a bad idea to bring up vaccinations at all. It's always good to get lots of opinions on controversial things, as long as no-one throws around horrible accusations (like calling others irresponsible for their choices) and everyone on this thread is far too lovely for that! :)

MrsSnaplegs · 19/08/2010 11:14

Welcome rockinmum My DC2 is due 6 Dec so pretty much same time! We're quite a friendly bunch on here so feel free to join in!

Japh I was reading an article in an NCt free mag yesterday that gave some good positions for getting LO into the right position - mainly they consisted of not on your back or slumped on sofa Hmm so no resting on sofa for us then! I also remember hearing something recently about the reason there is more back to back presentations now is women spend more time sat at a desk in an office than we ever used to in the past and we spend less time on our hands and knees because we use mops (or cleaners!) to wash our floors! I am sure the feminists would have something to say about that Grin

Right I've worked out if we all give 50p for the collection for C&G present we just need 2 million 350 thousand members of this antenatal group to have enough for her present - so come on ladies lets up and at it with recruiting to the Dec thread Grin

heidipi · 19/08/2010 11:24

Hello all - I haven't posted much but have been checking in now and then, really nice to her about all the kicking lately!

I'm seeing a consultant because of high blood pressure (am on methyldopa which is keeping it down ok at the mo) - when I saw her today she said to come back in 3 weeks (when I'll be 28 wks) for another scan to see if the baby's growing ok. I assumed she meant it might not be growing enough, but then she said that having high BP before pregnancy generally results in big babies! Anyone had any experience of that?

I'm not particularly worried about it - I guess bigger is better than smaller, and it'll be nice to see him/her again on another scan, just wondered if anyone had been told similar.

At my 20 wk scan they changed my EDD to 30 Nov, but I'm staying here in the December thread Smile

Hope you're all well. Oof for once it's very hot oop north.

MrsSnaplegs · 19/08/2010 12:04

http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/1024253-roll-up-roll-up-if-you-live-near-portsmouth-follow Portsmouth Chloesbaby and Cherylanntweedy - not sure if you may be interested in this thread - didn't want to volunteer you without your knowledge!

MrsSnaplegs · 19/08/2010 12:06

Oops sorry Heidipi I should have said hello and welcome Grin

Strix · 19/08/2010 12:13

Oh, I missed C&G's news until I saw there was a present in order. I had to go back and find the news. Congrats, C&G, is there a date yet? I probably missed that too.

MrsChris · 19/08/2010 12:14

Apologies in advance for the rant but I have just got back from the GP and am really pissed off!!!

We're off to Greece for a week's holiday in just under 3 weeks and as I look quite big (you know - people asking if I'm ready to drop/having twins blah blah), I thought it best to get a letter from the GP in case the airline question my dates - even though I'll be well under the 28 week limit to fly.

The GP I saw was quite young (i.e. about 12) so probably newly qualified, but she spent 10 minutes telling me how unsafe it was to fly at all in pregnancy, how I mustn't drink on the plane (!!!!!), how DVT is dangerous to me AND the baby and how no-one knows what ionising radiation does to babies. Fair enough - there are risks you need to be aware of when you're pregnant, but she spoke to me in such a condascending manner and reiterated each point about 3 times like I was an idiot and made me feel like I shouldn't even be contemplating getting on a plane.

I left feeling very upset about the whole episore and and quite anxious about flying. I had wanted to talk about some other preg-related stuff, but I was so shocked by the whole thing I didn't get round to asking anything else.

Wondering whether I should complain to the GP practice manager or whether I'm overreacting. Should I cancel my holiday? I have a very stressful job and the thought of this week away has been keeping me going.

Wondering what to do....

chloesbaby · 19/08/2010 12:15

Think I'd be a bit scared to jump in straight away meeting loads of pompey mums MrsS Smile
I will meet you two tomorrow and then might leap over and say hello on the other board. By the way, so you know who I am tomorrow, I am white, have dark hair and wear glasses and will probably be wearing jeans (just realised I will probably look the same as five other people in there!) You'll probably notice me checking out the bellies of all the women who walk in to see if it could be you Grin
What do you look like Cheryl and MrsS?

Strix · 19/08/2010 12:22

MrsChris, I would just disregard her advice. Loads of people fly in pregnancy. I also eat runny eggs, shellfish, and peanuts. I wouldn't complain, but I would request not to see her next time I made an appointment.

Our GP has several GPs there. I always ask for the same one because I like her.

Incidentally, I am getting on a plane the week after next for work. It hasn't even occurred to me to not go. And even if the GP told me it would turn my baby's hair green, I'd still go.

MrsChris · 19/08/2010 12:51

Thanks for the advice Strix - I will do as you say and ignore the SILLY COW.

I've also been eating runny eggs, shellfish and peanuts, so I don't know why I got so upset about the flying thing. I guess I just wasn't expecting a GP to be so aggressive and negative about what I saw as a happy thing.

I guess it's the hormones..... Smile

heidipi · 19/08/2010 12:52

Hello MrsS and all, thanks for the welcome. Can't seem to get interested in work today...

MrsChris it sounds like your GP gave you crap advice - I flew a few times earlier in my pregnancy and because there were a few raised eyebrows I looked into it a lot. Basically it's very safe - airlines don't want you to fly in the last few weeks in case you go into labour, not because it's risky. There can be increased risk of DVT, but wear the magic socks, get up and stretch your legs a few times and drink lots of water. A nice relaxing hol sounds like just what you need!

Here's a link that says radiation is only really an issue for pregnant cabin crew or pilots because they fly a lot. Hope that helps!
