Miffster - if it's your first, some hospitals insist on seeing a wet nappy or wet cottonwool from baby pee before discharging you - as well as insisting you have a pee first too. So knowing you have support at home doesn't necessarily mean you can get out of hospital straight away.
I think they're more funny about it when it's your first. A friend had her 2nd in February, went in at 6am and was home by lunchtime. She was very adamant that that was what she wanted to do if there were no complications but said they were fine about it once they knew it wasn't her first baby.
Afaik, there is no major advantage to going to a stand-alone MLU instead of staying at home, other than not having to sort out pool, etc yourself - and 1 disadvantage is that you can't guarantee a pool will be available at a MLU. Obviously if the MLU is attached to the main hospital, then transferring if needed would be easier.
We don't have a stand-alone MLU near us - the nearest is 25 minutes in the opposite direction to the hospital I'm booked in under! As the transfer is one of my big personal issues that's making me think home-birth, going to the MLU attached to the hospital doesn't sound great, but that's just me.
heidipi - sounds like what I've been assuming is BH too.
