A little experiment, can you identify the sex of a baby when they're wearing neutral clothes?

This is something that fasinates me! I have a 7 month old and I really think without wearing gender typical clothing you would have no idea of my babys sex.

I have put a picture of my baby of my profile, can you guess the sex?

Would be interesting to see others DC too!

memoo: I found that when I typed in "gender specific clothes experiment" into google, there are lots of interesting things there I'm curious about Pop though, wish we could see a picture or something! Some of the comments on that article are quite nasty too I think it's a pretty good thing to raise a child completely gender neutral, it may be confusing for them at school but it would help the other children stray from their gender specific activities somewhat surely?

DuelingFanjo · 25/04/2010 19:28

TeamEdward, I would have said boy with no hesitation.

DontCallMeBaby · 25/04/2010 19:28

I think I've removed anything from my profile that gives away whether I have a DS or DD - one photo left, neither pink nor blue, aged about 13 months. Girl or boy?

You can guess the kittens' gender as well for a real challenge!

waitingforbedtime · 25/04/2010 19:30

Dontcallmebaby - boy??

memoo · 25/04/2010 19:31

Team Edward, definately a boy

Dontcallmebaby, I think a girl!

I love child of our time. You used to be able to watch all of the first 5 series on the BBC website, but it's gone now.

DontCallMeBaby - boy?

Looks like a girl to me, hard to tell though I must admit.

littledawley · 25/04/2010 19:36

DontCallMeBaby - boy

BertieBotts · 25/04/2010 19:36

Also, I read a book once which was about facial structure, and it said that up until puberty, gender difference is basically irrelevant (for purposes of selecting a mate, it was talking about) and most people's faces look feminine whether they are a boy or a girl (and when body shape, hairstyle and clothing are hidden or made neutral, it is often very difficult to tell the difference)

And then once we get into old age, and are not fertile any more, again gender difference becomes less relevant, and faces begin to take on more masculine features.

DuelingFanjo · 25/04/2010 19:38

Dontcallmebaby - girl?

PDog · 25/04/2010 19:38

Don'tCallMeBaby - I think girl

Fel1x · 25/04/2010 19:41

OP - I would have guessed girl, although read down to your reveal before I posted!
Its the eyes, she has girls eyes!

TeamEdward, your DS def looks like a boy

and Dontcallmebaby - girl!

PorphyrophillicPixie · 25/04/2010 19:42

BertieBotts: Do you know the name of that book or anything out of curiousity?

Dontcallmebaby: girl? Adorable either way

(Don't you all just lov babies?! )

Amapoleon · 25/04/2010 19:42

Girl.

Amapoleon · 25/04/2010 19:44

Whoops, just realised you have revealed. I knew by her eyes

activate · 25/04/2010 19:46

Looks like a girl

Pluto · 25/04/2010 19:48

I haven't read the thread in case you have told us. I think you have a gorgeous girl - but the pinkish spots on the high chair she's sitting on might be influencing my response.

BertieBotts · 25/04/2010 19:50

Pixie, no, sorry, it was about 5 years ago and I can't remember. But I do know that I got it out of the library (our local library is quite small) and did some sketches from pictures out of it so I may have noted it down in my sketchbook so I will check later.

DontCallMeBaby · 25/04/2010 19:50

Looks like a win for 'girl' for my DC ... or rather my DD. Interesting though, three guess of boy in there! She is six now and unmistakable, long hair in definitely a girl way. But I was thinking only last night that with her hair tucked under her head on the pillow that her face itself is still quite neutral. Some of her friends have daintier features and look more obviously feminine, but then so do some of the boys - her 'boyfriend' for instance is beautiful.

In further ambiguity, has memoo herself just been mistaken for a highchair?

pixiestix · 25/04/2010 19:59

Man, I suck at this! Just read the whole thread and got all three wrong!

PorphyrophillicPixie · 25/04/2010 20:01

BertieBotts (I do love your name btw ) no problemo, I'm sure I'll find something similar! This is absolutely fascinating stuff for me, I love children in general, they're amazing little creatures

differentID · 25/04/2010 20:09

don't call me baby- I thought girl. Oh an dyour cats are boys, am I right there?

PDog · 25/04/2010 20:12

I've got them all right so far. Have a look at mine - I think it is obvious.

DontCallMeBaby · 25/04/2010 20:19

Yes, the cats are boys!
