A little experiment, can you identify the sex of a baby when they're wearing neutral clothes?

This is something that fasinates me! I have a 7 month old and I really think without wearing gender typical clothing you would have no idea of my babys sex.

I have put a picture of my baby of my profile, can you guess the sex?

Would be interesting to see others DC too!

This is so intersting, the majority of you guessed correctly that she is a girl!

Deepdarkwood, that really is fascinating, so by taking away the really obvioulsy clues we look for the more subtle ones

TBH, no I can't tell. If I had to guess I'd say girl, but that's just a feeling.

I've not read the thread yet, didn't want to colour my judgment . Off to do that now...

lol. Far too late. Oh well.

I've probably got pictures of DC in gender neutral clothing, if anyone want's a second round.

deepdarkwood · 25/04/2010 18:51

Indeed, memoo. And adults loose the abilty to do that (esp around differences in toddler gait, apparently) as we don't need the skill - we just look at the colour of the top!

DrivenToDistraction · 25/04/2010 18:51

want's?

BertieBotts · 25/04/2010 18:51

I thought girl straight away too, but I think it was to do with the spotty t shirt in the background, because the more I looked at her face the more she could have been either.

I remember on child of our time when the babies were all under a year old they dressed them up in the opposite gender clothes and gave them to one of the other parents (so they hadn't met the child before) and most of them just played with them as if they were a child of the gender they were dressed as, but I remember one of them said "Excuse me, I don't mean to be rude, but is this a little girl?"

Starberries · 25/04/2010 18:52

yes please, I need a second round! This could become an obsession I think lol.

LynetteScavo · 25/04/2010 18:53

Initially, I would have said girl...but the determined look in her eyes made me think boy...but she has a girls mouth....TBH, I had no idea!

BuzzingNoise · 25/04/2010 18:54

I was going to say girl. Or a girly boy

PorphyrophillicPixie · 25/04/2010 18:56

I thought girl but couldn't tell why. I'm glad she is a girlie! I've met plenty of older children who I've had difficulty with and it always embarrasses me! It goes to show how much we rely on children being dressed in specific styles or colours though doesn't it! Very interesting stuff.

If you're interested, I saw an experiment where they dressed a group of toddlers in opposite gender specific clothes and then put unsuspecting adults in with them and a choice of toys. You'd be surprised at how few realised that they were not the sex they were dressed as! I can't find it though, it had that childhood expert, the older guy with glasses and odd hair... my teachers in school loved him.

memoo · 25/04/2010 18:59

I want to have a go at guessing!!! Anyone else got any pics?

PorphyrophillicPixie · 25/04/2010 18:59

Robert Winston! The show had him in it, but thats all I know.

BertieBotts · 25/04/2010 19:00

Yes Pixie it was on Child of Our Time so it was Robert Winston. Wasn't a proper experiment though I don't think, just a little observation thing.

memoo · 25/04/2010 19:03

Oh I know which one you mean! was it 'child of our time' or something?

I read an article a while back about a dutch couple who dressed they're child in gender neutral clothes and refused to tell anyone if it was a boy or a girl.

PorphyrophillicPixie · 25/04/2010 19:03

Bertie: Ah, didn't realise it was on Child of Our Time, I googled that as I remembered watching that programme in school and knew he did the experiment. Observation would be a better term for it actually as it was just to see how people reacted. I may rewatch that as there are some very interesting bits on it from what I remember.

BigTillyMint · 25/04/2010 19:04

There was something about the shape of her head that made me say girl. And she looks a tiny bit like DD did.

memoo · 25/04/2010 19:05

So it was a Swedish couple makes interesting reading
