DS says mama, dada & nana, but doesn't know what they mean yet, so I'm counting that as babbling. Apparently mine was "readitbook" (a request said as one word).

So, I'm being nosey - What was your first word?
What did your baby/ies say first & how old were they?

Apart from mama, dada etc...DD's first word was 'shiney' at about 14/15 months.

That's my girl! Grin

DumSpiroSpero · 05/09/2011 22:10

YNK - DD's current favourite word at nearly 7 is 'bangers'.

greedygoose · 05/09/2011 22:52

Hoover

DesertOrchid · 06/09/2011 09:03

DD1's first proper word with understanding that wasn't 'dada' was 'Tiggy-cat', at 8 months. Then it was 'Daddyyyyyyyy!"

Mummy came a few months later. After, as I recall, shipwreck, treasure chest, caterpillar and walrus.

ElusiveMoose · 06/09/2011 09:33

DS1's was 'moon' (he's a poetic chap). DS2's was duck (he's a little more down to earth) Grin.

lalasmama · 06/09/2011 09:39

At the grand old age of 18months, my DD said her first word the other day - "Asda".
My nieces first word was "Shit". Its all she says.

AnotherMuesliPleaseBarman · 06/09/2011 09:40

'Book'. But for quite a while, it came out as 'bap'. Made for v entertaining library visits!

thesurgeonsmate · 06/09/2011 10:20

Lots of bubbles, aren't there? This was an early word for us, we were looking at a cartoon with bubbles in it, and dd said "bubbles!" - I think indicating that plenty of bubbles get blown at nursery, because I don't do them that often. First word probably "bye bye", there was dada before that but it hasn't really persisted and I'm not sure it was daddy. "Bye bye" is a winner with her, she says it all the time. Making people feel a bit rejected, really.

GoTheFkToSleep · 06/09/2011 12:51

DD1 'Duck' at 7.5m (she has always been a show off Grin)
DD2 'Awa' (Anna - DD1's name) at 11m

Wafflenose · 06/09/2011 13:12

LOL at lots of these!

Dd1's was 'ball' at 9 months, followed by 'Mu' and 'Da' for Mummy and Daddy over the next couple of days.

I don't remember how old dd2 was, but think she was 10-11 months when she screamed 'Dadddyyyyyy!!!!' when he dared to walk out of the room!

mybootsaremuddy · 06/09/2011 14:30

DD1 'Beach' (sounded more like bitch though BlushGrin 11 months, we were living right on the coast in nz at the time.

DS1 'more' 10mths

dd2 'meeee' 10mths she picked this up from dd1 ds1. It was realy cute the first time she did it as id just asked 'who would like to try a muffin' when this little voice yelled 'meeee'!!! She looked so chuffed with herself.

DN 'whatsthat'? 14mth

DS2 'Tak-toorrrr'(tractor) 9mths. We live on a farm and dh or one of our farmhands drives past 1000000 x a day so it was inevitable that it would be one of the first words. In fact now at 16mths other than a handfull all his words are a farm animal of machine. He even knows combine and bailerHmm.

DS3 and DD3 only 3mth so a bit young yet....... bet its tractor again though or 'oh pants'Grin (the nanny says that a lot!!)

GingaNinja · 06/09/2011 14:35

Tractor (DD was 13 mo). Followed by Digger.

I still have to ensure I leave enough time in the morning for her to chat to every digger we pass on the way to the creche....Smile

ZZZenAgain · 06/09/2011 14:37

more

(in the sense of more food) often as an encouraging question - more? Later it developed to "more meat".

badgerbrisket · 06/09/2011 18:48

baked beans!

Restrainedrabbit · 06/09/2011 19:17

DD1 - flower, said 'flaaa', 11mths
DS - dog, 11.5mths
DD2 - up, 9.5mths

CompactDisc · 06/09/2011 19:21

Hehehe, funny to read those above, nice to see all of your remember those wonderful little moments.... Let see!

Daughter: Daddy at 9 months, followed shortly with Iloveyou, warbled all in one go. While hubby was changing her diaper

Son (autistic): Mommy at 8 months, with something that sounded like where's Daddy about 3 weeks later, while looking at photos.

Both, 17 months apart, spelled DOG quickly from the pc baby game I had, we had a chihuahua and by the time son was born we had acquired a pomeranian as well. I prefer them over cats with kids, since of specific diseases, so we had two. They were such a big help. Regular little baby sitters. Sorry rambling....

Later CD

SlugsAndSnails · 06/09/2011 19:58

DS (19months) said 'Hiya' at 9months, using a remote control as a pretend phone.
'tat' for 'cat' at 10 months (still his favourite thing in the whole wide world)
However he resolutely refuses to display any good talking skills in public, leaving me to believe I am imagining the conversations we have in babble at home! Blush

WhoremoaneeGrainger · 06/09/2011 20:01

other than dada, my dd's first word was "bistit"......[bad mummy emoticon]

DOOFUS1 · 06/09/2011 20:22

Nana, bananas of course, followed by dada, car, digger and mummy! Such a boy?!

PinkEmily · 06/09/2011 21:11

My 10 month old says Daddy and yogyog (yogurt!)

issynoko · 06/09/2011 21:27

"For God's sake mother, must you be so coarse?" when I asked if he'd done a poo.

PositivePrana · 06/09/2011 22:03

My LO is 23 weeks & said Mmma ma 2 weeks ago for 6 days running & then stopped!! She had worked up to this point for the previous week by repeating mmmmmm over & over.
I'm gutted she has stopped saying it but thank goodness my MIL & FIL heard it before she stopped!

pointythings · 06/09/2011 22:22

DD1 - 14 months: 'shoes'

DD2 - 14 months: 'duck'

DD1's favourite word at 17 months was 'bollocks' because she heard me say it when someone cut me up on the road on the way to nursery Blush.

DD2 came out with 'combine harvester' at 19 months - she was a bit obsessed with farm vehicles at the time.

I think I am a bad parent, but in my defence I have to say that currently (they're 8 and 10) their speech is mostly sensible, appropriate and only a little precocious.

brdgrl · 06/09/2011 23:28

DD at ten months - my cat's name. Despite ferocious attempts by her much older siblings to get her to say a) their names; b) various swears; c) the names of manchester united players.

i was pleased.

BeaWheesht · 06/09/2011 23:39

Dd's at about 10m (a month or so ago) was 'yeahididyeah' with a clap of the hands - she did it for every teeny tiny little acheivement :)

She has said a few words now but my favourites are when pulling herself up for the first time 'tada!' Like a magician and not a word I know but when you say 'love you' she blows you a kiss.

Ds's first word was at about 11m I think and it was dadeeeeeee followed by dog (all people / animals), bob (the builder), mudge (cat), 'doos'(juice) and several other words before once moaning 'muuuummm' not even 'mummy' but boring old mum said in a sulky 'god you're such a burden' kind of way ;)
