What was your/your LO's first word?

DS says mama, dada & nana, but doesn't know what they mean yet, so I'm counting that as babbling. Apparently mine was "readitbook" (a request said as one word).

So, I'm being nosey - What was your first word?
What did your baby/ies say first & how old were they?

Ds: Dadda - first babbling, but definitely with meaning by 14mo or so. No others at all.

Then 'duck' and a dozen others and about 8 signs just before 19mo.

By 20mo he had about 200 words. 'Mummy' was not one of them - that was around 2yo after he'd spent three months calling me Daddy. Very embarrassing picking him up at nursery!

squiggleywiggler · 27/08/2011 22:00

My first word was 'bear.

DD, at 11 months, first word was...'bottom'

Clear as day - didn't stop shrieking it for about 8 weeks.

Auspicious?!

mamaGool · 28/08/2011 21:28

These are so cute! And I can imagine all your LOs from just their first words - says a lot about a person... Grin

squigglywiggler - my friend's DD's first word was boob (again, a request, but could be embarrassing depending on the social situation)!

'cat' at 8 months...

EBDteacher · 28/08/2011 22:49

DS (12 1/2 mo) says:

Didi (daddy)
Doddy (doggy- we have two)
Mumbum (mummy)
didit (I was clever)
deh!/dis! (There/this is an interesting thing)
dat? (What is that?)
buh (book)
meh (milk)
deh-ee-ee (there he is, which is our version of peek-a-boo)

No other human could possibly dechipher any of this! I would accept any HV or other description that he is non-verbal. I get it though Wink

EBDteacher · 28/08/2011 22:51

Oh yes, and dutty (ducky)! But only bath ducky, not real ducks!

TheSkiingGardener · 28/08/2011 23:27

Car, at 8 months. With pointing and excitement. More words took another 2-3 months to arrive!

PeriPathetic · 28/08/2011 23:35

These are sooo cute Grin

DD was 8 months and said "mim-mill" - windmill. Then a few days later "flower".

...and she hasn't shut up since - she's nearly 10 years old now.

Akandra · 29/08/2011 01:09

RedHotPokers I have been training my little one to say dada first (no success yet) for months. Then when she calls for dada I can say 'it's you she wants'. He's countering by encouraging her to say mama. I think she may end up a bit confused ...

duchesse · 29/08/2011 01:12

DD3's first word was most definitely No! from about 8-9 months onwards.

AnnieLobeseder · 29/08/2011 01:16

I can't remember DD1's, so it was probably one of the usuals like dada.

DD2's was "shoes". She is obsessed with shoes. I'm so ashamed. Blush

sancerrre · 29/08/2011 01:32

"Google" at 3 months. I'm assuming this means he's going to be a computer genius so am buying myself him an ipad to encourage him.

spiderlight · 30/08/2011 19:30

Star - well, 'tar, while pointing at a star. Followed about ten minutes later by 'tair, while pointing up the stairs. I think he was about 9 months.
