DS says mama, dada & nana, but doesn't know what they mean yet, so I'm counting that as babbling. Apparently mine was "readitbook" (a request said as one word).

So, I'm being nosey - What was your first word?
What did your baby/ies say first & how old were they?

ds1 - 'cake' (on his 1st birthday!)
ds2 - 'shoes'

MysteriousHamster · 05/09/2011 10:18

Nursery kept telling us that DS didn't have any words yet, but he started saying 'tickle, tickle, tickle' at around 12 months. He is 14 months now and has only just started saying 'hiya' and 'hello there' (it really does sound like hello there). And I think 'there you are' when I play peekaboo with him. But it's more like thereyouare mushed into one.

Interesting stuff about trying intonation etc as DD clearly copied DH when she shouted "Oh Yeah!" at the cricket at 6 months- We had a packed room at the time and we all fell about laughing! Once she got the big reaction she repeated it a couple of times then said nothing for a couple of months.

First word said with intent was one of the dogs names "Lola" at 8 months, and now at 9 months she shouts "Ca" at the other mutt (Inca).

Lots of babbling, but I think she thinks "Mama" means pick me up! Often repeated ad nauseum until she gets the desired effect, but doesn't use it to get DH's attention.

Oh and "Dag Dag" whilst waving for bye bye (DH is Dutch)

dilys4trevor · 05/09/2011 11:18

DS1 at about 14/15 months - 'shoe', closely followed by 'car'
DS2, now almost 10 months - just babbling. DH CONVINCED he is saying dada discriminately but I am really not sure. Neither of mine have so far done anything particularly early!

CocoKev · 05/09/2011 12:20

Oh- we think we had our first word (with meaning attached) tonight.
In answer to the question 'Would you like some cheese?', DS 9 mo smiled, clapped and said 'Ya ya'. Am somehow raising a German-speaking cheese monster Grin . Couldn't be more proud!

Psammead · 05/09/2011 12:24

Da-bow (up, down, with relevant arm actions and high-low intonation) at about 10 months
Beau (cat - no idea why)
Oof oof (dog)
Oo oo ahh (monkey)
Biddabidda (I want) all between 10 and 12 months.
Wow (owl)
Go-go (car) at about 14 months

Her newest one at 19 months is Mimi (mummy). Yay!

ShoutyHamster · 05/09/2011 12:25

My DS is one of the very early talkers. I have 3 witnesses (my postnatal group) of him saying "oh dear" in context (slipping of my lap) at 5 and a half months. I thought he was saying "hello" before that, but noone else saw that, so I don't count it. He kept on saying in context from then onwards (eg when sick). By 12 months he had over 100 proper words (full words - but baby-ish pronounciation). At 18 months he was saying things like "oh look at that man, Mummy, he's sitting in the drivers seat".

He did a funny thing at 14 months where every noun became "car". So pointed a plant and said "car", but was working on sentences so would say things like "in the car", "on the car", "by the car", "under the car"....never come across anything like it!

He is very clever (now 7), but held back as school because of suspected dyslexia. Breaks my heart :0(

Fo0ffyShmoofer · 05/09/2011 12:45

At 8 months gestation I heard DD say " Bloody Hell Its hot in here".

Pootles2010 · 05/09/2011 12:46

'Spank'. I shit you not. We had friends over, ds was eating his tea in his high chair, I think about 11 months? We were talking about something or other, I can't remember what but I was teasing DP over something, he said 'Pootles I will spank you' (obviously joking. He has an...unusual sense of humour), lo and behold a little voice pipes up 'SPANK' clear as day.

Never repeated it since thank the lord.

Hullygully · 05/09/2011 12:55

ds was "happy birthday" at 12 months, after four parties in a row. Didn't speak again for another year!

Can't remember dd's - a source of much rage on her part - as it was probably ordinary. Should have made it up.

girnythecat · 05/09/2011 13:02

At about 11 months DS's first word was papoo( purple) Second word was gwa gwa ( dummy) as that was the contented sucky noise he made when was given one. We didn't call it that, it was purely his own invention.
At age 5 his is now going through an irritating phase of prefacing every word with the same letter- " pan pi pave pa piscuit please ?" Hilarious for all of five minutes.

LCRLCR · 05/09/2011 13:51

After "Daddy" came elephant trumpets, lion roars and barking until at 11 months we got "baboon". Any animal that isn't one of those mentioned above is a baboon. Now 12 months, she makes inflected counting noises and likes to give me an emphatic "no" at mealtimes

pinkhyena · 05/09/2011 16:19

My DS is 10 months and says 'daddy' all the time and he is a crafty one, he calls me 'mama' but only when he wants something Hmm

He says 'teddy' but other than that its all babble still really.

Insomnia11 · 05/09/2011 16:30

DD1 was about 9 months and said "Clock" (though she couldn't say her Ls very well Grin) Shortly after was "shuz" (shoes- she was putting my shoes on before she could walk)

DD2 was about 11 months and said "Mo mo" (Mungo - one of our cats) Think her next word was "shuz" as well :)

MamaLaMoo · 05/09/2011 17:25

No idea what my first word was! Mum claims my tantrum prone sister's was "no!" exclamation mark always included.

DD1 said "light" and "dog dog" at 9/10 months after saying the usual mama, dada. Also learned "boobooboobooboob" quite early while chuckling and handing me the yellow cushion I would breastfeed her on.

Animal noises were picked up early like others have said above, interesting. Youngest is 4 weeks and has perfected WAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

mamaesi · 05/09/2011 17:44

around 13 months my daughter said didi=doggy (points to our dog and any dogs she sees out and about)

this was followed by dada and mama

now at 17 months we have
step
up
ball
baby

notevenamousie · 05/09/2011 17:47

Cat.
First crawling and first steps were also in pursuit of the (now dearly departed) cat.

RuthChan · 05/09/2011 21:00

My DS' first proper word was 'back pack'.
He was so delighted to be wearing one!

pixipie151 · 05/09/2011 21:17

My DD daughter's first word was NO. She was about 10months. She is now a very chatty 2 1/2 year old. It is now her favorite word. Lucky me.

mumblecrumble · 05/09/2011 21:25

hiya and quack

Both in the bath - we do our best chats in the bath.

fidelma · 05/09/2011 21:27

DD1 Bubble
can't remember the other 3 but bubble was close!

fidelma · 05/09/2011 21:29

Oh yes I remember dc 4 was saying Hello from about 5 months. Alady in a shop heard him and was amazed. he hasn't stopped talking since.(almost 2)

YNK · 05/09/2011 22:00

My daughters was 'Boobies, NOW!' She's 21 now (loves it when I tell people -haha!)
