Oceana..."Its original innit...sniff"

minouminou · 16/07/2009 12:18

Dorcas is a real name - I think it's African-American.

potatofactory · 16/07/2009 12:21

Isn't the postmistress from 'Lark Rise' called Dorcas?

Anyhoo...

Pyrocanthus · 16/07/2009 12:27

I think there's a Dorcas in Thomas Hardy somewhere. It's biblical, ultimately, I believe.

Snorbs · 16/07/2009 12:34

I used to know a chap called Hobbit Coward.

alittlebitfat · 16/07/2009 12:48

Candida....true
Melaena...also true...those who are medical will know this is also the term for poo with blood in it! She was South African.

Tweetinat · 16/07/2009 13:09

Oh and I've just remembered that my stepdad has a niece called Tuna and a nephew called Jam.

Candida's a tricky one - it's not an uncommon name at all, and means white, pure, spotless in Latin, but you'd think the yeast infection would have killed it off, as it were, by now.

Is it still used?

alittlebitfat · 16/07/2009 14:35

Pyrocanthus, it is still used yes. Also, a celeb recently named his baby daughter Lolita...clearly didnt appreciate the connotations

Pyrocanthus · 16/07/2009 14:37

I sincerely hope not.

If people are going to be easily offended, when someone is asking for opinions on worst names, then this thread may as well be closed now.
These are just people's opinions, it's not a fact a name really is horrid, it's just a matter of opinion.
Yes, I did say Albert is a name I really do not like. But it's my opinion, others may actually like it. Same goes for other names that have been mentioned on this thread, some may like them, others not.

If my DS's name was mentioned then I'd not go raging about it, because it's not for everyone.

chegirl · 16/07/2009 22:09

I love the name Dorcus.

Not sure why canttouchthis is getting such a hard time for not liking Albert. Have I missed something?

Why is ok not to like Jay-T, Mckenzie, Ocean etc but not Albert?

I got DS's class list today. This thread made me look at it with new interest. There was a little girl's name on there which really couldve been seen as totally chav or totally posh depending on the school/area.

It is an unusual name but would not look out of place in Knightsbridge or Barking. Its all about perception.

Grandhighpoohba · 16/07/2009 22:39

Breegianna. Not sure of spelling.

And Sydney. For a girl

Grandhighpoohba · 16/07/2009 22:50

And I have a pretty unusual name, and will sulk if anyone mentions it on this list

Flibbertyjibbet · 16/07/2009 22:50

Kortney

Blurgh.

canttouchthis · 17/07/2009 20:14

thanks chegirl

at the end of the day, we all have different perceptions. if we all thought the same it would be a boring world!!!

there are some stotters on this thread though, makes my dull name look even duller!

HerHonesty · 17/07/2009 20:17

hector and jesse for a boy.

ChocFudgeCake · 17/07/2009 20:26

Thandeka, Mercedes is a normal name in Spanish, the car was named after someone called that.
I met someone called Calamity

expatinscotland · 17/07/2009 20:30

Farquar.

Parmageddon · 17/07/2009 20:32

Egbertus. Sorry if this is anyone's brother.

FAQinglovely · 17/07/2009 20:35

agree with Greensleeves et al.

It wouldn't be so bad if some of these "odd" names weren't actually perfectly legimate names in their own right - just they happen not to be British names..........

met a Man called "Roman" once and his surname was "Trojan" (apparantly) too weird.

cookielove · 17/07/2009 20:57

i think foreign names need not to be mocked, however i don't think that this particular thread is actually doing it.

But i have come across some odd names

Such as : Bunny
Silver Hugandhold
Storm
Precious(a boy)
