I dont like these threads much either. Sorry guys I know that its all a bit of fun and some people DO call their kids awful names BUT

These threads always seem to end up sounding a bit 'arnt the working classes terribly funny?'. Whether thats the intention or not, its how they end up.

Some of the names on here are fine IMO. Some are odd and I dont understand the motivation of the parents.

But names are so personal arnt they (tell me where to put the ' in that word please). Like someone said Ralph is hated and derided by many but a perfectly nice name to lots of people too. Is Mckenzie such a dreadful name or is it only disliked because of the sort of people it reminds you of? If it was taken up by the middle classes as an example of celtic beauty (in the manner of Niamh etc) would we all be snorting at it?

I know I sound a bit of a cats bum but dont flame me cos I am quite nice really, these threads just make me feel a bit uneasy.

Heard a mum call her little girl Amygdala in Paris the day before yesterday...

Not keen on that am afraid!

Thunderduck · 15/07/2009 19:09

Did she have a sister called cerebellum?

Greensleeves · 15/07/2009 19:14

I don't see any incongruity here Maggie

I agreed not to use the term you objected to because you objected to it

why do you still have a problem?

bellissima · 15/07/2009 19:32

I think you do have to be careful when discussing real children. And it is very easy to target 'chavvy' or 'common' names. That funny American site that someone linked to the other day also made me laugh at 'fringe characters from the Mists of Avalon' and other fanciful names. And I'm amused, eg, when suggested trendy middle class spellings of supposedly 'Eliana, Elainia, Ayslain etc are discussed at length on this forum with the correspondents basically skirting around ANYTHING that isn't actually Eileen or Elaine - because oh no, they would sound, well, common! (I also think that Maureen actually sounds nicer than a lot of the other Irish and cod-Irish 'M' names that come up for discussion but once again I can guess that few MNers would go for it) - Maybe we aren't above being ridiculed ourselves (and I'm sure that goes for me too, I hasten to add).

Nevaeh.

And recently...Forever-Smileigh. Just asking for the child to grow up to be a moody teenager, and who could blame her, lumbered with that?

bluemango · 15/07/2009 20:37

Twin boys called Mervin and Bervin.

I also met a woman who converted to Christianity and adopted the name Gennicle.

skihorse · 15/07/2009 20:45

Neave - every time I see that written my top lip curls up in disgust.

canttouchthis · 15/07/2009 20:45

bluemango, you must be making that one up. are you serious??? what are some people thinking

chandellina · 15/07/2009 21:12

Marlou. some kind of split of the boy's grandparents' names. Poor lad, it just doesn't sound right.

BikeRunSki · 15/07/2009 23:14

Fleximum - I once knew twins whose middle names were Skania and Volvo - maybe your Skania was the same one?

MamaLazarou · 16/07/2009 08:24

Pitt (seriously)

sleeplessinstretford · 16/07/2009 09:03

there are twins/very close in age brothers near me called rio and rooney.
Ralph is the willie in Judy Bloom
Mercedes is a proper name,he named the car after his daughter.
My friends have just named their son Albert, I really like it.
The man who did our kitchen has a daughter called 'Truly' after Truly Scrumptious...

MamaLazarou · 16/07/2009 09:20

Ahhh, my cat was called Rooney before we got him!

Charliethecat · 16/07/2009 10:18

Not sure canttouchthis what type of sad existance you lead that the name Albert reminds you of that.

You must live in a seedy part of the county!

It says more about you than the name.

If you say rude things abut names which you know people on here have named their children then expect a tounge lashing.

I knew a girl called Dorkus once.

stripes200 · 16/07/2009 11:50

When DD was a baby a woman asked me, as strangers do when your DC's are cute babies, what her name was, I said "She's Ellie". The woman misheard me though and thought I said "shit-Ellie" and she looked horrified and said "she's called Shit-Ellie?"

She can be sometimes
