I also know a little girl who's named after a famous sporting brand, but she's a mate of my daughter's and it doesn't seem fair...

Mercedes, if nobody has pointed it out yet, is a pukka Spanish name, which came before the car.

Greensleeves · 14/07/2009 12:54

this is nasty

I know you feel you're laughing at the names and not the children

but it IS upsetting people, you have been told that

so why not just drop it and find something else to laugh about?

Walkingwiththighosaurs · 14/07/2009 12:56

I know someone who called their DD, KT, pronounced katie!!! They actually spell it KT, now that is odd.

NeedaNewName · 14/07/2009 13:00

The thing is Greensleeves, no one is saying all htese names are bad/funny/ridiculous etc. Obviously someone likes them otherwise they wouldn't have called their children those names, the thing is I personally find the name Wiggy funny (and this is coming from someone with a very similar surname) other names on here don't bother me one way or the other.

Life would be very dull if what we were able to laugh at were censored. If you look at many topics that comedians cover they're in bad taste, does that mean we shouldn;t laugh?

I apologise if I have personally offended anyone but I would be more upset if this thread were pulled for upsetting a minority. You kind of get the idea from the title of the thread, if this kind of thing ain't your thing, don;t look on here.

Greensleeves · 14/07/2009 13:03

I see your point, but it seems to boil down to

"I wouldn't be upset so whay should anyone else be"

"I think it's funny so I'm not going to stop"

"sod off if you don't like it"

which is your prerogative on a public forum but is a bit poor, really

if you know it is upsetting people it would cost you very little not to do it

I have seen my dc's names on threads like this and felt really hurt by it - choosing your child's name has such powerful feelings attached to it, it seems rather low to knowingly trample all over that just for a cheap giggle

MaggieBeeBeau · 14/07/2009 13:04

Hmm
emmmerson · 14/07/2009 13:08

People who are so emotional about "their" child's name shouldn't venture onto a board like this.
They will not hear only good opinions.

blondissimo · 14/07/2009 13:29

IMO, if you are going to choose a name for your child that is on the uncommon side, then you should expect that some people will find it odd/funny.
It's not just the really uncommon names either - I know a man called Ralph, which I personally don't think is a bad or unusual name, but mutual friends have commented on it, saying "Who names their kid Ralph (chortle)?!"
Everyone is different - and everyone has different senses of humour.
I agree, don't go on a thread like this if you are likely to be offended.

minouminou · 14/07/2009 13:55

Alaric's an old Germanic name.

SouthMum · 14/07/2009 13:56

Not everyone will like your kids name - FACT.

Is it childish to laugh at names - probably but there again if you call your kid something ridiculous like Shitlicker or Fannyflaps (or something) then some ribbing on a message board will be the least of your issues.

blondissimo · 14/07/2009 14:20

SouthMum I am really offended - my ds is called Shitlicker

FreshScent · 14/07/2009 15:01

This topic is elitist and unneeded. And the fact that legitimate names from other cultures are being mentioned drags it into ignorant and offensive territory.

MojoLost · 14/07/2009 15:07

Thandeka: FYI Mercedes is a beautiful spanish name. Nothing wrong with it.

4andnotout · 14/07/2009 15:11

I know a TeeJay

4andnotout · 14/07/2009 15:14

Kayc - pronounced Kay see

D'Artagnan (not French)

Pyrocanthus · 14/07/2009 15:52

I did once know a car enthusiast who said that if she had 2 daughters she'd name them Mercedes and Portia (Shakespearean spelling crucial here) and nobody would be able to say a word.

splodge2001 · 14/07/2009 15:58

Armani

Littlepurpleprincess · 14/07/2009 16:09

McKenzie.

I know that's really popular at the moment but I just get the feeling we'll all grow up soon and realise that Mckenzie is just trying way to hard to be 'hip'.

and it's so ....chav....

(puts on helmet and hides behind the sofa)

MaggieBeeBeau · 14/07/2009 17:15

Cyradis, not at all. It's just interesting to see that Greensleeves is very conscious of the potential offense that could be caused.

Btw, the name Geo could be short for George.

Tamlin · 15/07/2009 17:37

Merkin, on the child of an American acquaintance. A 'merkin' is a pubic wig, originally worn by prostitutes to cover up STD sores. I can't believe the parents didn't google it...
