A name that always makes me raise my eyebrows is the name of a child in ds's school

MercyOfTheGiftOfGod

this was once shortened to MercyOfGod

now she is just Mercy

Jezzabelle - spelling debabted between parents at length. They went for this spelling in the end.

treedelivery · 10/12/2008 03:12

debabted??????

ninedragons · 10/12/2008 03:59

I read a magazine article recently about a woman who had a daughter called Jer'Taime.

Pretentious and illiterate, all rolled into one.

Gorionine · 10/12/2008 10:41

I always thought Teddy was short for Theodore?

Miggsie · 10/12/2008 11:01

Well, I've never actually laughed at someone's name but I did think "oh dear" when I met a boy called "Cain" and a boy named "Calypso".
The parents obviously did not realise that they had named their boy after the first murderer, or that Calypso was a girls name, she was the sea nymph who had the hots for Odysseus.

Tut tut, look what happens when an entire generation misses out on their religious and classical education.

As you can see, I am in touch with my inner snob.

Hubert...there's nothing wrong with it, other than the Tom Lehrer song "whatever happened to Hubert?" which does make me giggle.

prettybutterfly · 10/12/2008 11:40

Calypso is not only a girl's name (nymph's name) but it sounds like a girl's name.

evenmoremiserablethanbefore · 10/12/2008 12:52

what about Asterix for a name?!!

I hope my friend doesnt see this, she may never speak to again.

My Nan was gonna call my Mum Blodwen !!
I know she was Welsh, but please!!
she got Gwen instead, much more acceptable

jingleMAMADIVAsbells · 10/12/2008 12:59

Friend called her DD Callie Lou (yes thats her first name) pissed myself thinking it was a nickname.

Other friend called her DS Also know someone who is scottish who was adopted by an in dian family, they called him Ardon. ROFL that gets some sniggers when we are out

BalloonSlayer · 10/12/2008 13:02

Re the name Spike, it is lovely and really cool but it originated in the army as a generic nickname for someone tall and thin, ie they look like a spike. Most famous example Spike Milligan. If you read his army memoirs there are quite a lot of other Spikes, all called this for the same reason.

So if you call your DS Spike and he turns out short and fat, you may get a few snurks from older people.

I have heard say of someone who had two DDs, Siobhan pronounced (See-oh-ban) and Shevaunne. Whether it was true or not...?

And I did encounter someone with two boys called William and Liam . I wondered whether, if they'd had a third they'd have called him Billy.

ChairmumMiaow · 10/12/2008 13:08

My bump was called Herbert. Everyone said I wouldn't be able to stop calling the baby that, but I didn't have a problem.

If I had called him Herbert he would have deserved to be on this thread. We've never met one yet though

prettybutterfly · 10/12/2008 16:37

My first bump was called Iggy. We did call him Iggy by mistake quite a bit after he was born, but not for long!

Ds2 is called Hugh. We call him Hubert for long.

Nancy66 · 10/12/2008 16:41

in all seriousness - if somebody asks for an opinion BEFORE they've named their kid and it's a bloody awful name then I will say that I don't like it.

if they've had the child and are not asking for opinions then I don't say anything. their baby, their choice.

Even though I hate, hate, hate made up chavvy names i also think the world would probably be a duller place without them.

beautifulgirls · 10/12/2008 16:47

I know of a Cassanova

peacelily · 10/12/2008 16:50

Hiya haven't read all of thread sorry if I've offended anyone only meant it as a bit of fun, not mocking/sneering or anything like that.

Different senses of humour and all that. Prob because I wouldn't be remotely offenede if someone didn't like/found dd names strange I just think we had different tastes. Wouldn't cross my mind to be bothered we can't all like the same things.

Just for the record doing a school obs today saw a "tequila" on the whiteboard with some ticks next to her name.

I kid you not.....

I met a baby Maggie yesterday and was a bit . As a teenager of the 80s at a very left wing school, my immediate association was "Thatcher" rather than "Simpsons". Her mum was about the same aga as me, so clearly must have a different political bias.

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 10/12/2008 16:55

Hmmm, difficult to know how you'd feel though really. I've had people express surprise or not like my boys' names IRL and taken it on the chin.

But the times their names have been laughed at on here, it did feel sneery and it does hurt.

And I am fucking nails, so it must be even worse for people with feelings

prettybutterfly · 10/12/2008 16:59

BikeRun, my immediate thought was Gyllenhaal....

I've forgotten the 80s, as has the great Dame herself I should think.

I'm 35 btw.

wombleprincess · 10/12/2008 19:55

yes, hector.

but then my dd's middle name is buttercup and I have had lots of interesting comments. which just makes me love it more!!

and tearinghairout... i am type of potato as well. not an anya though. only found out when i was 15 though. the type of potato more commonly found in crisps...
