Sorry Doodle, just posted the last one a bit fast. It would not be because you had something to do with it by any chance? Never in my life have I seen someone better nicknamed than her, especially as the "nicknaming" happened just hours after she was born.

I read once about a family named Tanner with a son Hunter. Hunter Tanner, aack! I suppose he could hunt animals and then tan their flesh to make coats...

My dd's name is Anya (Anya, not Ahn-ya). What's wrong with Anya? I always thought it was a relatively common name. sigh...have I set her up for a lifetime of teasing??

Piffle · 07/12/2008 17:16

anya is a nice uncommon but pretty name
I knows lot of eastern Europeans called anya( arn ya)

BoccaDellaNativita · 07/12/2008 17:17

kerala - Yes, that's exactly what I was trying to describe! My friend was miffed that I already knew a boy with the same name as her son. Well, that's not my problem ...

whomovedmychocolate · 07/12/2008 17:20

DH's friend has named their baby Jonty. Another named their little boy Thor. It's a toss up which one I laughed more at TBH. I didn't managed to choke back a giggle. I did manage to get out 'umm that's unique' in each case though

BoccaDellaNativita · 07/12/2008 17:23

Isn't Jonty a nickname/abbreviation for Jonathan?

And there are so many Freyas (which I still like as a name) around that I think we need some Thors for balance!

pigleto · 07/12/2008 17:34

My boss is called Anya. So it can't be a new made up name. I like it myself. Is it not scandinavian?

My dn is called Ulysses on his birth certificate. He is lovely.

My db is called Jabez, which is a family name but not one I considered for my own ds.

Part of me likes new made up names because they are creative and individual. They can be a bit silly though.

bamboostalks · 07/12/2008 17:39

My friend in the states called her dd Valerie Joan after the 2 grannies, I was quite surprised as she is called Silk herself which is seriously cool.

whomovedmychocolate · 07/12/2008 18:20

Not in this case Bocca. In this case it's just Jonty .

peachygirl · 07/12/2008 18:28

We have a Lorca at swimming . A girl, after the Spanish playwright.

I'd have thought of it to be more of a boys name myself.

BoccaDellaNativita · 07/12/2008 18:30

whomovedmychocolate - Yes, that's what I was getting at (not very clearly, sorry). Calling a child Jonty is like calling him Mike or Nick. It's an abbreviation, not a real name. At least if Jonathan was on the birth certificate he'd have the option of using his full name if he disliked Jonty.

I haven't got a DD but I think Lucy is a lovely name!

AussieLou · 07/12/2008 19:12

'INIGO come and have your babyccino'
Makes me think of the 'Princess Bride'
My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to die!'

WewishyouaBUMPERLICIOUS · 07/12/2008 19:20

A work colleague had a baby and another colleague was telling me the details and I said "so what did they call her?"
"Sandra"
"Oh" was all I said. It seemed like such a strange name to call a baby nowadays.

The funny thing was though, the bloke who had taken the call and relayed the information didn't have any of the details so just made up a name when he emailed the team! Bizarre! The baby is actually called Gabrielle which is lovely.

Isn't Aine pronounced On-ya?

UnquietDad · 08/12/2008 09:10

With a baby called Inigo I imagine the midwife at the birth calling "out-e-come".

AuntieMaggie · 08/12/2008 09:14

Cosmo... seriously...

PuppyMonkey · 08/12/2008 09:26

I saw a woman in a cafe with a Digby once. have we had a Digby yet? It made me pmsl...

PuppyMonkey · 08/12/2008 09:27

Changing the subject a bit, yesterday in the park, a man was shouting for his Rotweiller dog: "Thrust!! Over here!!"

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 08/12/2008 09:33

At a playgroup in Germany one of the mums intoduced her newborn, Siegfried. We all stuttered something about unusual and then started talking about how big he was. There was a lot of tongue-biting going on. It was a family name, the dad and grandad and great grandad were called Siegfried.

Hubert and Anja were popular names in Germany about 40 - 50 years ago. My BIL is Hubert.

belgo · 08/12/2008 09:36

My newborn ds's name appears on this list, I had to check the poster's profile to make sure I didn't know her!

I know a couple of Anyas, it's a very nice, normal name.
