Sappho is ace

Dougas is fab

Not a big fan of barbara personally, but it's a perfectly good name

This thread has made me like hubert

ihatemyjob · 07/12/2008 09:48

wouldn't sappho cause them a lot of problems if they turned out not to be gay?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sappho

blametheparents · 07/12/2008 09:48

When I hear 'Lola' it always makes me want to sing 'Is a showgirl'
I quit like the name really, just the association makes me smile.
I had a friend who called her DS 'Hunter', which is a bit strange, but as he got bigger he was the smallest, most sensitive child around and really did not suit his name, iyswim.

DP was watching the boxing last night and there was a boxer called Tyson Fury, that was his real name his Dad was a fan of Mike. But he couldn't have been anything else with a name like that, I couldn't see him in court and representing the accused Mr Tyson Fury.

I don't think I would ever laugh at the name someone gave their DC, it's a childs name, the world would be a very boring place if everyone was called the same 10 names.

I think in 15-20 years time theres going to be two distinct sets of names there will be the traditional Elizabeths/Matildas etc and the more exotic Destinys/Storms/Demi-Leighs.

skidoodle · 07/12/2008 10:02

I know all about Sappho and I'm not sure I'd use it but if I heard someone else had I'd think it was pretty cool.

I feel very strongly about names but I've never sniggered at someone's choice just because I didn't like it

Jenbot · 07/12/2008 10:03

My cousin is called Hunter, he's grown up now though.

Gorionine · 07/12/2008 10:27

I think names are usually very personal choices from the parents and criticising such a choice is useless and can be very hurtfull.Names are usually chosen to give the child an identity, not to please the neighbours!

My children do have foreign names and while I do undestand that people can sometimes mispronounce them (which does not bother me the least) I hate comments like " why on earth would you choose such a name?" which I get quite often.

Once at a baby clinic, one of the ladies there (who just happened to not be in her prime youth) had a look at DD1's read book and made a comment about DD1's name to her collegue, thinking I would not understand presumably as married name is unmistakably foreign. It really did hurt me.

Fillyjonk · 07/12/2008 10:38

I was at a baby group a while back and someone introduced her baby as (I think) Sammy, but explained it was short for an Arabic name (I can't remember exactly what)

Anyway, not one but 3 women advised her in strong terms to call him Sammy because "otherwise people will think he is a terrorist" .

Gorionine · 07/12/2008 10:42

My DH is called Samy, the arabic name, It means "elevated" it is not a short version but the proper name.

Gorionine · 07/12/2008 10:46

[angry} at these women too. BTW

Fillyjonk · 07/12/2008 11:13

ah that is interesting

I think it was a shortened version of something but it might well have been just two first names together, or something

the point the women were making is that Sammy/Samy is a nice common name whereas the child's full name made people think he was muslim. And of COURSE all muslims are terrorists

Gorionine · 07/12/2008 11:31

I am dreading the moment my children will have to face that sort of comments but in the same time, I do not want to denie them their origin and religion also I do admit that my first choice name for DD3 was Osama which I changed to "save him" and myself from stupid comments.
I do regret the fact that I gave in but DD3 has another beautiful name so that I don't regret.

Majeika · 07/12/2008 12:31

we were shocked when a Norbert came into our class - he is 5.

But now he is just Norbert and he is lovely.

Memphis makes me go as does his sister Skylar.........

Doodle2U · 07/12/2008 12:34

Gorione - you're getting your children mixed up! DS3 !!!

Your children all have beautiful names but my fave is your youngest DD's nick-name

OrmIrian · 07/12/2008 12:35

Yes. Fraid so.

Woman at work. Went to see her at her desk and saw a photo of 2 beautiful blond angels.

"Oh they're lovely children. What are they called?"

"Trevor and Trinity" she replied without a trace of irony.

Ozziegirly · 07/12/2008 12:36

My hairdresser's boy is called Rocco Blaze. My mum was but I quite like it in a "not for me in a million years but if you are determined that your child should be a film star, then ok"

Piffle · 07/12/2008 12:36

no but think slebz ashlee Simpson and pete wentz could hear an entire world guffaw in unison when introduced to BRONX MOWGLI...

Umlellala · 07/12/2008 12:43

Ha, our son is called Skyler (Sky) . We get a fair few but we love it. AndI'm still convinced it will be popular one day...

lou33 · 07/12/2008 12:45

ToysAreLikeDogs · 07/12/2008 12:46

I know a baby boy Indiana

They call him Indy

Think someone had a thing for Harrison Ford

deckthegirlandboywithholly · 07/12/2008 12:51

I met a girl called Qteesha which was pronounced Kew-teesha. Never quite sure about that one

UnquietDad · 07/12/2008 13:10

It's time, once again, for this

The only antidote to name-related fuckwittery. Enjoy!

(Warning - will have you snorting with uncontrollable laughter.)

kerala · 07/12/2008 13:22

Fox for a little boy. And the mum was lovely really nice but had to rearrange my face into a "how lovely".

Algernon - surprising but actually grown on me.

The other thing that makes me laugh inwardly is people that announce a really really popular name (Jack/Grace/Tom) as if they have thought of it themselves and get cross on hearing of other children with the same name. Well dont pick the name that has been number 1 on the most popular name list for the last 10 years if that bothers you!
