Maybe Cosmo was named after Cosmo Landesman, Burchill's Modern Review mate...

edam · 08/12/2008 09:51

I know a little girl called Ocean which does sound a bit hippy-ish.

Once heard a woman shout across Clapham Common Asda in a very strong Saaf Lunnon accent: 'Shaniqua, get your bum over 'ere!'

chequersandroastedchestnuts · 08/12/2008 10:04

I know a DIgby in his 30s, I quite like it.

Heard a Shakira and a Shapparel (sp?) being called in Tesco's the other day.

maltloafeater · 08/12/2008 10:17

There was a Basil at dd's play group. Every time I heard his mum call him I thought of Sybil Fawlty.

UnquietDad · 08/12/2008 10:32

I'd have thought "Boom! Boom!"

frazzledoldbag34 · 08/12/2008 11:09

ooh Basil's cute!
I'd be looking for his fluffy tail though.

What a wonderful thread!!!!

I met a woman (who has turned into a good friend) who called her son Loren... I thought she said 'Lauren' (they sound the same) and just stood like

Also, Raglan... I just felt like saying to the mum: So glad you are rich, cos you wouldn't have made it through my school with a name like that!!!

Thereagain, I have relatives called Mairead, Grainne, Sorcha, Fergal, Siohbann, Sean, Eoghan, Noni, Lycia, Fiachra and Darragh so really shouldn't be throwing stones!!

Kelix · 08/12/2008 11:38

My Dad has recently had 2 kids and called them John and Thomas. Good names for blokes but for babies it sounds slightly wrong IMO

My DD is called Cherish and one guy at my work said when I told him 'I hope she forgives you for that' I was like WTF but I was pregnant at the time

I like her name and sure she will too. I know another Cherish who is lovley (shes about 20) and her name has never been shortened and she likes it so fingers crossed DD wont be too angry with me lol

TheSeriousSanta · 08/12/2008 11:42

He called his kids John Thomas?????????? That's so cruel. Are they twins?

I know a Cherish but she is always called Cherry.

Kelix · 08/12/2008 11:45

Thats what I thought SeriuosSanta! No they not twins there is about 11 months between them. I so want to tell you the second names but there maybe someone who knows them on here so dont want to start a family row just before xmas lol

Think your the first person to know another Cherish BTW

spudballoo · 08/12/2008 11:47

Sp

JiminyCricket · 08/12/2008 12:06

only when with her in a soft play and we heard another Mum calling out the very unique boys name

frazzledoldbag34 · 08/12/2008 12:09

I like Digby!
Does that mean you'll all shoot me too?
Am on the look out for a good boys name (for impending possible boy).

chequersandroastedchestnuts · 08/12/2008 12:09

Spudballoo, good for you. Digby is a fine name - it really suits my friend.

chequersandroastedchestnuts · 08/12/2008 12:10

(and by fine I mean mighty fine, not you know, meh.)

DeckHallsWithFIMBOughsofHolly · 08/12/2008 12:39

I know a Floyd - i think it's cool.

Gorionine · 08/12/2008 12:55

Shakira is an arabic name that means "grateful"
not necessarely named after the singer.

chocolatedot · 08/12/2008 13:08

Otter and Song.

chequersandroastedchestnuts · 08/12/2008 13:12

Chocolatedot I read that as snog at first!!

chocolatedot · 08/12/2008 13:13

Snort, although not sure snog is that much worse!

Winebeforepearls · 08/12/2008 13:17

Tiger (boy)

Panda (girl)

(Not in the same family)

Winebeforepearls · 08/12/2008 13:19

oh, and some may remember the sisters we encountered at the swimming pool: Lolita and Jezebel

MrsTittleMouse · 08/12/2008 13:22

My Mum is dreadful for this - I will tell her the names of my friends children and she will either laugh out loud or wince. It's not as though they are names like Apple or Glint either - these are just names that would have been considered old-fashioned a couple of decades ago but have become more popular again. I hope that she never has to meet said friends...
