Jacklyn or Jacquelyn?

I love the way that Americans pronounce the name Jacqueline and am certain that I want DD’s name to be pronounced like that. In the UK, ‘Jacqueline’ is not going to receive the pronunciation that I’m intending. What do you think of Jacklyn or Jacquelyn? DH likes the first spelling better, and I prefer the second. I’m typically not keen on alternate spellings, but I see these as entirely separate names with different pronunciations so don’t think it quite counts as that.

Jacquelyn is a real name!! and it has a very different sound to Jacqueline. As one I don’t answer to Jacqueline because it’s not my name.

I’m British and would pronounce Jacqueline “Jack-lin”. with a hint of a non existent a. Difficult to describe but most would hear it as jacklin.

I’ve always pronounced Jacqueline the same as Jacklyn (and am English). But I agree that all the ones I know go by Jackie or Jack so it doesn’t get used much.

Me too. Our kids only pronounce it thus, as well of course, as Balakay and Dee-nice.

I prefer Jacqueline spelling. Most will pronounce it Jac-a-lin here in Canada, or if French zhak-leen with a soft zh for the j.

Surely Jacquelyn will be pronounced exactly the same as Jacqueline? Jacklyn is a completely different name.

The British pronounciation of Jacqueline tends to be Jack-uh-lean whereas the US pronunciation is Jack-uh-lynn. I agree that the latter is much nicer, but I'm not sure that alternative spellings will get the desired effect, and the child is probably going to end up being called Jackie either way, which I really dislike.

That is how I'd spell it if I wanted the Jaclyn pronunciation.

I have a cousin Jacqueline: she’s only ever been called Jacqueline. No one‘s ever shortened it (we weren’t allowed 😁)

It’s a French name, isn’t it? I think it’s supposed to be pronounced Jaque-leen, although where I am from, we pronounced it Jack-leen. Don’t mind the French pronunciation, don’t like our (northern) pronunciation!

if you want the end part pronounced as …lyn, then don’t go for …line.

Spelling aside it’s very 1960s and not in a cool way either.

It is a French name hence the 'leen' rather than lyn' sound at the end. They pronounce it zhahk-leen. It's interesting that people here are saying that they've never heard it pronounced with 'leen' at the end. In Scotland it was a fairly common name when I was growing up in the 1980s, particularly in my Mum's generation and it was always pronounced Jack-uh-leen. Maybe that was different elsewhere in the UK.

She will be called Jac or Jacqui.
If you like that go for it but spell it the standard way.
There were several boys my elder daughters age ( so late 20s now). Anthony. There parents would correct anyone who didn't pronounce it as anfony. All known as Ant or Tony by school age.

I’m a Jacqueline. It makes me screw my nose up when people think there’s a coo sound in my name but I’ve given up correcting people. I think if you want the the two syllable pronunciation then Jacklyn is the way to go.

This was the one name that drove me to despair at work. So many different ways to spell it - more than you’ve suggested- and so many ways to shorten it. And people who called themselves by the long version but were on the directory under a shortened version and vice versa.

Jacklyn looks like a made up, hybrid name. Not a good look and perhaps suggests that you can’t spell. The usual spelling for this pronunciation would be Jaclyn. Jacqueline is the more European version deriving from the popular French name.

Every Jaclyn/Jacqueline that I’ve known has been known as Jackie or Jacs though - you can’t control what your child is called, or what they prefer, once they start school.

Im a Jacqueline too and my parents always insisted it must be pronounced in exactly the same way as the song from the 1960s.

i would pronounce this this same as Jacqueline (as the line is said Lynn) but it’s a much prettier spelling than what you’re proposing.
Jacklyn is a harsher sounding name. I don’t like it.

I love Jackie, thankfully! I just want to make sure that her full name is spelt in a way that makes it clear how I’d like for it to be pronounced when she’s called it.

I think she’d just be ‘Jackie’ or ‘Jacks’ though, wouldn’t she. And as for trying to dictate how it’s pronounced, I think honestly that what you’re trying to engineer is too nuanced. People will say the name how they say it.

Sorry, both of your suggestions just look like you can’t spell… The name Jaclyn already exists, why not use that?
