Would Maximus Decimus Meridius be too much for a baby name?

My DH is a huge Ridley Scott fan. He wants to call our son Maximus Decimus Meridius.
I’m not so sure. I’m worried he might get bullied?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I understand that Biggus Dickus is making a comeback

I wish they were… 😂

Denim4ever · 30/05/2026 23:12

I know a Maximus, he was a big baby. He was a child in a big family and the names got madder as the births continued. He is firmly Max.

I know an Octavia who was the eighth grandchild. She's never using her full name. The abbreviation is Tavi, do you can still feel sorry for her.

Side question - why is there no laughing emoji in the Mumsnet reactions? I am in stitches at these comments. Or rotflmao because it's 2008 apparently.

There used to be a 😂 on the reactions, but too many people used it to mock and deride.

A poster would say (for example) 'I'm so fed up of people being nasty to me for being a single mum with 3 children with different men,' and they'd get half a dozen 😂 reactions. Some people got them when they said they'd been diagnosed with cancer, or their mum has just died, or 'my husband is pissing around with another woman but I can't find any concrete proof.'

Things were hurtful and upsetting for the poster, and some people would go and click the 😂reaction. No useful advice, and no response at all sometimes, just the 😂reaction. So Mumsnet withdrew it. Shame really, as most people used it in the manner it was meant for. I can see why they took it away though.

I'd go for something more distinctive personally.

Calliopespa · 31/05/2026 00:26

How about Narcissus?

ClownStar · 30/05/2026 20:20

Bit too common these days. He'll be one of three or four in his year.

Have you considered making it a bit more unique, such as Maksymus Dessimuce Mérhydious?

Yes, I like this spelling much better, but I feel it needs a hyphen, to make it truly classy. Or maybe even two hyphens, to ensure no one leaves off the Mérhydious.

Maksymus-Dessimuce-Mérhydious.

He'd just shout back "I MUST HAVE MY VENGEANCE IN THIS LIFE OR THE NEXT" and carry on rampaging round the slide

Omg I am in stitches 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 brilliant response

aka the three Spice Girls who didn’t pass the audition.

KnitWitsAnonymous · 31/05/2026 09:18

But how would you pronounce it, OP?

Is it Macks-ee-muss Dess-ee=muss Merry-dee-muss?

Or is it Maxi-mous Desi-mous Mare-iddy-mous?

You really need to think about the way different people will pronounce it

igotbills · 31/05/2026 09:23

I think it's lovely, I'm popping it on my list along with Isambard Kingdom Brunel

Pinkissmart · 31/05/2026 09:41

Thats so bad. Perfect name for a dog though

More like the Spart Boys.

101Alsatians · 31/05/2026 10:25

I genuinely do have a Maximus 🤣Suits him perfectly, but he mainly goes by Max or Maxy.

We're in Cyprus tho,so plenty of Maximos,Maxim etc. so doesn't stick out much tbh, except he has a Greek surname so it is an unusual combo.

Undertheeaves · 30/05/2026 20:18

Don't do it. There are 4 of these in my DDs primary one class already. My son is one of 3 Spartacus's (Spartici?) and he hates it.

😂

There's a Hadrian at DS2's school Grin

I had a First Year (Scottish high school) who asked me to call him Stormageddon.

After a fortnight, he begged me to stop: “I didn’t think you’d actually do it!”

I love this! And that you just called him that ... brilliant.

If going with the "mous" ending I'd add the e.

Maxi-Mouse Deci-Mouse Meridi-Mouse

fiveturds · 31/05/2026 11:59

Bizarre. Give your child a practical name. If your DH wants to use a name like this, give it to a pet.

Spelling’s a bugger.

Before I retired, I’d taught TJ, T.J., T-J and Teejay.

I’m betting that the kid regretted the last one: there is a maths textbook series in Scotland under the imprint of Teejay Publications.

Thanks for the explanation. A shame because this thread needs one!

It did get misused.

You can just put 😂on the thread. Then we all enjoy it.

I love it OP, it's so understated and simple. Go for it.
