Would Maximus Decimus Meridius be too much for a baby name?

My DH is a huge Ridley Scott fan. He wants to call our son Maximus Decimus Meridius.
I’m not so sure. I’m worried he might get bullied?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
cheezncrackers · 30/05/2026 21:47

I think it's charming and has a very nice feeling of the ancient world about it. I say go for it! And if he ends up being as hot as Russell Crowe in Gladiator he'll be a big hit with all the feminae 😉

Random321 · 30/05/2026 21:47

Ah no, don't waste all the good names on the first child!

Brothers called
Maximus
Decimus
Meridius

would be far better.

You know those moments when your DM is really cross with you and calls you by your entire name? I can just imagine OP in about 3 years time in the playpark shouting "MAXIMUS DECIMUS MERIDIUS JONES! COME HERE NOW!"

HugoThatway · 30/05/2026 21:49

How about Rufus Corvus?

He'd just shout back "I MUST HAVE MY VENGEANCE IN THIS LIFE OR THE NEXT" and carry on rampaging round the slide

emmetgirl · 30/05/2026 21:54

Of course it’s too much.

I understand that Biggus Dickus is making a comeback

Yes there’s one in DS’s year. He has a sister you know!

Moaning5 · 30/05/2026 21:57

We laugh at stupid names like this in the staff room.

We’ve had 6 years of fun out of a Hercules who’s leaving for high school this time.

Great suggestion - Incontinentia Buttocks for a girl.

There's a Hadrian at DS2's school Grin

If you ever need a thousand stables cleaned out you might need to be on his good side 🙃

newnewnamename · 30/05/2026 22:05

I've known a couple of Hadrian's, I thought it was fairly mainstream?

Well maybe it is, but if he'd gone to school in the 80s he'd have been constantly asked about his wall.

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/05/2026 22:13

Only if you call your second son Jeff.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 30/05/2026 22:19

Have you considered Rose as a middle name instead? It's got a similar feel.

sesquipedalian · 30/05/2026 22:21

@ Greensinkingrings -
“The names Primus, Secundus, Tertius, Quintus, Sextus, Septimus, Octavius, and Decimus mean, respectively, 'first', 'second', 'third', 'fifth', 'sixth', 'seventh', 'eighth', and 'tenth', and were originally given to second, third, etc. sons in birth order.” It may also refer to the month in which the child was born. https://academickids.com/encyclopedia/index.php/Roman_naming_convention#:~:text=The%20names%20Primus%2C%20Secundus%2C%20Tertius,sons%20in%20birth%20order.

I have a very great friend in Rome named Biggus Dickus! Do you find it risible? 😠

Theunamedcat · 30/05/2026 22:24

I've only ever heard of cats being called this

Sorry

KnitWitsAnonymous · 30/05/2026 22:29

I think OP should be grateful that Ridley Scott has never made a film about Wee Willie Winkie . . .

Undertheeaves · 30/05/2026 20:18

Don't do it. There are 4 of these in my DDs primary one class already. My son is one of 3 Spartacus's (Spartici?) and he hates it.

Only 3?

PowerTulle · 30/05/2026 22:36

Love it OP but it’ll date quickly. Could you swap out Decimus for something more timeless?

Dave? Dakota? Dre?

KnitWitsAnonymous · 30/05/2026 22:44

I really love it but wouldn't use it because I don't like the shortened version, Maxi Deci Meri
