Someone who loved Judge Dread was going to call child Dread. Thankfully was persuaded otherwise.

I know of an adult Lilith.

I was led to believe it's Welsh.

Very old name that comes from Jewish mythology. Adam's first wife.

Also foremother of Jadis in the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe.

I used to know a Heathcote (quite nice name) but it was pronounced Heth-cot as though we were all saying it in a northern accent (he and his family were from London). Less Wuthering Heights-esque and more pharmacy chain or fancy care home

When my brother and I were arranging our mother's funeral, the man at the undertakers introduced himself as Heathcliff, his first name. His Mum had probably been a Bronte fan.

If it's the name I'm thinking of I've met 2 people called it.
I'll just add, after years of interviewing people I've heard all sorts of odd names and very strange spellings. I can't tell you half of them because it really would be outing.

Edited

It probably isn't the name you're thinking cos this is really shocking and not recommended in our religion at all anyway.

Also have a child in my daughters class whose name translate to dirty bottom.

They are in Primary school so far. So don't think she's been bullied for it yet. But can imagine in High school she will be.

Obviously cant write down names cos identifying.

TartanTwit · 12/02/2026 14:12

I heard a posh lady calling her son and his name was Mungo which surely is a dog name

1clavdivs · 12/02/2026 14:12

I knew someone once whose sons were called Ronnie and Reggie.

We know , don't we, girls and boys?

That was meant to say "We know a song about this" but then the formatting ate the cute comment. 🙄

Not quite but I am aware of a child named after one of Jupiter’s moons. Lo

Reminds me of Gide's Les Faux Monnayeurs. One of the women is called Arnica because her father was a botanist and said he would give his children botanical names. Marguerite etc were called out by his friends as not in the spirit of his intention so the youngest got lumbered with Arnica. Her surname was Peterat, unfortunately (means fart).

No, it's a traditional upper class Scottish name.

My mother wanted to call me Orianna after a character in a book she read while pregnant. Thank goodness my father was more practical. It sounds like something you would name a cruise ship!

I quite like Orianna

RunLyraRun · 12/02/2026 14:15

My DS plays tennis with a boy called Kingsland.

I met a woman called Gralyn yesterday, named after her grandparents Graham and Lynda - like a house name!

And my exDH once taught a girl called Grosvenor, named after the hotel where she was conceived and pronounced by her parents as "Gross-veenor".

Take your pick!

There was a thread on here once where somebody in the OP's family wanted to call their baby Genghis.

There was also another one where OP's DH was desperate to call their new DS Vercingetorix.

DSGS wanted to call his child Jesse if a boy. We all know it is a Biblical name and it is male, and he was thinking of Jesse James, of course, but we all in various ways discouraged it. Baby turned out to be a girl, luckily (though he could have called her Jessica?).

If it begins with A, I have.

I worked overseas for a bit and children were allowed to use a westernised name instead of their original name. Most families encouraged sensible choices but a couple let the (young) children pick.

I taught a Terminator and a Jumbo. Needless to say, as they got older, they realised the error of their ways and picked sensible names.

I once taught English to some visiting Chinese children here in the UK. They all wanted to choose Western style names for themselves while they were here. I had a Percy and a Mercury among others. Very cute!

I can't imagine many people would make that link 🤷

Women would. People not so much.

I once knew a man whose sons were called Augustus and BJ, poor boys. I can't see why anyone would call their child Binky or Muffy, they sound like childish nicknames. I think there was a Binky on TOWIE or some show like that.
My cousin (boy) is called Joscelin, my aunt was deeply upset that the family reaction to the name was mostly wtf? and my husband is taking bets on how long it will take him to ask to be called Alex, his middle name is Alexander.

Edited

Joscelyn (Jocelyn) is a (French) boy's name - dimunitive can be Josh. I first came across it in a novel by Ronald Welch. Wish I had given it to my son but I named him after another character in a different book. Turns out his name is very common and though I like it I think he would have made a good Joscelyn.
Joscelyn Alexander sounds fantastic. Not sure what is wrong with Augustus, either (diminutive usually Gus).
(Instead, I've used Joscelyn as the name of a wicked but also good - and also beautiful - male character in the space opera I am writing.)

Just had a memory hit
When I was expecting my DD, many years ago, I had a few names that were questionable, as baby names.

Avimore (I like the flow of the word for some reason)
Adelaide (I decided its old fashioned and a place in Oz

And for DS the following names I liked

Benedict (I don't think that's way Out There though)
Cyrus

Someone told me a story of how DS1 was named Shaun (pronounced shorn) and DS2 was named Sean (pronounced seen) - thought that was awful, if more than a bit funny!

No! The person wasn't Irish obviously (I would pronounce them both the same way, as an Irish person, something like 'shawn'). That's worse than the classic John and Sean for brothers.

Kci. Pronounced Casey.

I know of a Kci too. Must be the same one, surely?

I also once met a toddler called Koolio. He must be in his twenties now, wonder what he thinks of his name?
