Someone who loved Judge Dread was going to call child Dread. Thankfully was persuaded otherwise.

My dd went to college with a lad called Busco. His nickname was ibs. Took me ages to figure it out lol

busco (buscopan) ibs relief

We always refer to that product as Bust-the-pan, after somebody originally misheard it in a TV advert!

Heathcliff - heard on a cross channel ferry when the little darling was running away barging into everyone
Schyyannah - in play group. Poor kid will spend her life spelling it.
Thunder and Lightening - twins again in playgroup.
Ophelia Balls - real person in a village near where I used to live. Why, just why.
Galaxxie
Candida - girl at work, quickly changed her name in her teens.

I just cannot stand the made up names. an evening watching american football is a real eyeopener literally some of the most ridiculous names. As soneone whose maiden name had an unusual spelling I can tell you what an absolute pain in the arse it is to have to spell your surname every single time you use it. why dont these parents think of this?

Just had a memory hit
When I was expecting my DD, many years ago, I had a few names that were questionable, as baby names.

Avimore (I like the flow of the word for some reason)
Adelaide (I decided its old fashioned and a place in Oz

And for DS the following names I liked

Benedict (I don't think that's way Out There though)
Cyrus

Well Adelaide the city was named after Queen Adelaide. But I suppose today it's practically extinct as a name.

My mum was due on Valentine's Day so her parents planned to call her Valentina! I think that would have been pretty bad. Luckily she was late.

Valentina was in the top 50 girls names in the US last year - number 41, between Lucy and Leilani.

Thunder and Lightning 🤣

I won’t say the name, but a girl named after one of the female leads of a fantasy show. The character had not finished her development arc when the child was named and as such the child is now named after the villain. It’s a pretty name, but the moral of the story is make sure the show is finished before you name your child.

i feel most sorry for all those women called Alexa...

I know of a Kci too. Must be the same one, surely?

I also once met a toddler called Koolio. He must be in his twenties now, wonder what he thinks of his name?

Let's go and visit him together, so we can ask him in person... I'll see you when you get there.

MeganM3 · 12/02/2026 14:37

I like loads of these! Nothing wrong with most of them at all. Plus some are from other cultures.

Someone told me a story of how DS1 was named Shaun (pronounced shorn) and DS2 was named Sean (pronounced seen) - thought that was awful, if more than a bit funny!

They’re Irish names and both of them are actually pronounced Shawn

Walkacrossthesand · 12/02/2026 12:14

Well, I heard of a child whose parents had named him Mason but insisted it was spelt with an ‘i’ after the a - anyone who knew any French at all, blinked a bit.

There was one of these in my DS's class.

I think the Welsh name Sion is pronounced the same way too

Well I'm a woman and didn't make the link 😁

Me neither...
Virtually any initials could mean something to somebody, and absolutely nothing to 99.9% of the population.
I came across somebody with the initials DMI the other day. That is also an acronym for a technical term I used daily in a previous job. Didn't feel the need to point this out to the person.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 12/02/2026 13:35

I once came across a baby called Lilith. The parents had been inspired by the character on Frasier. They clearly didn't understand the joke.

What was the joke?

Pony as a nickname is quite fun.

Not really fun if you consider its meaning in Cockney rhyming slang 😳

My daughter was at school with children called Digby, Angelfaith, and Silvercup.

If I was born a boy I would have been called Gilbert, thank the Lord i was born a girl and my Mum was around to veto Dad's preferred names which were Margaret and Frances. Margaret isn't so bad cos it can be shortened to Maggie which I like, but I can't stand Frances or Fran for that matter.

Well there you go - it's all so subjective. I love Frances and would love to be called Frankie as a nick name.

I heard a posh lady calling her son and his name was Mungo which surely is a dog name

Mungo Park was an 18th century explorer.

BeardieWeirdie · 12/02/2026 14:44

I know a little boy called Legend. I’d love to ask his mother what on earth she was thinking but have somehow managed to keep it zipped.

Pony makes me think of Ponyboy Curtis in SE Hinton's "The Outsiders".

i feel most sorry for all those women called Alexa...

I remember thinking those women should have grounds to sue amazon…

I knew a toddler in 2017 called Alexa and then just in a matter of short time suddenly her name sounded ‘wrong’ and they had to start using nicknames for her.
