Someone who loved Judge Dread was going to call child Dread. Thankfully was persuaded otherwise.

My mother wanted to call me Orianna after a character in a book she read while pregnant. Thank goodness my father was more practical. It sounds like something you would name a cruise ship!

It's a version of Arrianne or Arrianna. Greek and French. Nice name.

Biff, Chip and Kipper aren't their real names though 😁
Kipper is Christopher I think.
I can't remember which twin is the girl and which one is the boy so I've forgotten what Biff and Chip's real names are.

True - at least they are only nicknames!

It's a very long time since our DS was the age for them, but isn't Biff (sort of) short for Elizabeth or something? Presumably Chip's actual name is Potato?!

IwantToDatePicard · 12/02/2026 13:44

My dad went to name me moonbeam over 50 years ago, the registrar told him to get a grip and go outside and pick another girl name!

We're very traditional and patriotic in our tastes. Our twins, Kent and Devon, have always said how much they love their names; but for some reason, their little sister Eastridingofyorkshire (nn Dingo) constantly moans about hers.

😂

I know someone who named their baby daughter Soul. I also knew of someone called Russell Sprout.

My mother was born on Valentine’s Day and she had Valentine as her middle name. She hated the name but fortunately it was her second name. Her first name was Beryl which she didn’t really like either.

My grandpa was called Valentine (I personally like it), and his wife Beryl (much worse). Not that odd but interesting your mum has those names!

But does it have that meaning in the culture where it’s used as a name?
I know many names which have one meaning in the language of their origin and rude/ unpleasant meaning in a different language (modern or ancient).

E.g. Linda, which means poo in some languages too.

I used to know an Ariane when I was growing up. It just makes me think of the Welsh word for cash.

We need a lot more registrars like this nowadays!

Loveapineapplepizzame · 12/02/2026 13:47

I know someone who has kids called Courtney and Cobain.

Honey Raze. First name isn’t horrendous but paired with her middle name sounds like a stripper but she is generally called ‘Hun’ by everyone. All I think is ‘you ok huuuunn?!’

A friend of DS has a brother called Wolfgang. Which actually I can’t work out is mad or pretty cool.

Adorabella-Rainne. Just why? I mean can be shortened to Bella but still.

There’s a boy in DDs year called Patch

I can’t stand the name Reggie. We know of one and he’s an absolute menace and his little best mate is called Ronnie. I feel sorry for the teacher of that school intake year. We also know of a couple who actually have twin boys called Ronnie and Reggie

TheWytch · 12/02/2026 13:48

Had I been named after my other grandparent I would have been Gwladys.

It hasn't yet come back into fashion. I wonder if it ever will

Mauvish1 · 12/02/2026 13:49

Lilith is a lovely name, and dates back to prebiblical times.

I've never met a Gaylord, but for the few that are around, that must be a difficult name to carry well.

I came across twins called Castor and Pollux Gollihoff but I did find them in 18th century resources whilst researching something historical. They're not still around!

I taught a boy called BJ.

They’re my partner’s initials 😂 he absolutely hates it!

I know someone who named their baby daughter Soul. I also knew of someone called Russell Sprout.

I wouldn't choose it myself, but I actually quite like Soul - it's 'out there' but in a cool way. Unless you used it as a middle name, which she broadly went by, but with the actual first name of something like Rachel or Rebecca. R. Soul Smith sounds much less cool!

Nellieinthebarn · 12/02/2026 13:50

I've mentioned this before, its not the actual names that are awful individually, but I think to name your 3 sons Ronnie, Reggie and Frankie is a poor choice.

Teaandwater · 12/02/2026 13:52

Kaiser, a particularly bold little boy who's mother was screaming his name for all and sundry to hear.

Peach Blossom, totally ridiculous.

whiteroseredrose · 12/02/2026 13:52

Kci. Pronounced Casey.

If I was born a boy I would have been called Gilbert, thank the Lord i was born a girl and my Mum was around to veto Dad's preferred names which were Margaret and Frances. Margaret isn't so bad cos it can be shortened to Maggie which I like, but I can't stand Frances or Fran for that matter.

lol
I hear You
A name for Me that my Dad championed was Tallulah . After Tallulah Bankhead apparently.

Well, I heard of a child whose parents had named him Mason but insisted it was spelt with an ‘i’ after the a - anyone who knew any French at all, blinked a bit.

Unless we know the same people there are at least two boys with this name around. My first thought was the same as yours when I heard it. Perfectly normal name, just why with the spelling though? My daughter has a very ‘common’ short name yet the registrar ran through a list of other spellings she’s had for said name - most of them elongated and made no sense!

Grammarnut · 12/02/2026 13:53

Needmorelego · 12/02/2026 13:04

Sorry but why?
What am I missing?

BV = Blessed Virgin as in BVM - Blessed Virgin Mary aka Sancta Dei Genetrix - holy mother of God.

Not too bad, House is a beloved character in the eponymous show!

Needmorelego · 12/02/2026 13:07

Oh.
I can't imagine many people would make that link 🤷

Particularly as Beryl Valentina presumably had a surname so wouldn't be known by initial BV

Oh please let that be true Russell Sprout😂 Also on the subject of nicknames. I heard on the radio about a guy nicknamed Aladdin at work. His real name was Matt Ryder. It really tickled me for some reason.

RubyHiker · 12/02/2026 13:55

Versace mc -word that rhymes with versace
Heard it called out in a gp waiting room. Many a head turned

I used to know a Kaiser, but the family were not originally from the UK (or any part of Europe) and it was pronounced "Kezza".
