Someone who loved Judge Dread was going to call child Dread. Thankfully was persuaded otherwise.

The baby in the bed next to me was called Winter Blue. I privately thought it sounded like a paint colour.

Just checked. It is a bloody paint colour.

I had a Doctor once called Annette Curtain.

Within the UK at least, Gaylord is a pretty unfortunate choice.

There is a Jail at the school I work at.Awful.

Are you sure it wasn't Jael? That's a biblical name

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 08/03/2026 15:23

Just because a name has been used in a book and people haven't heard it outside the context of that book, it doesn't necessarily mean it was taken from that book.

Meriadoc is a perfectly good name of Welsh origin. Like Hermione wasn't invented by JKR, it wasn't just dreamed up for the purposes of LOTR.

And no, none of my children are called Meriadoc...or Hermione, for that matter.

I did know someone whose surname was Hunt and gave their child a name starting with C. Perfectly nice first name but C Hunt felt a bit unfortunate. Would have been equally bad if they'd had a boy named Michael (but they didn't).

Dh once worked with a Michael Hunt - colleagues used to call him on his extension asking for Mike Hunt. wtf are some parents thinking?
I also hate names that are regular but spelt weirdly - why?

Maybe they’d never watched Meet the Parents?

I am fully aware that Meriadoc which is I believe the Welsh version of Meriadeg is the last name of the legendary founder of Brittany Conan Meriadoc. There is also I believe a Saint Meriadoc sometimes known as Meriasec so indeed it could just have been that the family were religious. Hermione on the other hand is from Greek mythology. Just because I ask a question doesn’t mean I’m ignorant of a name’s origins.

JKR didn’t write LOTR that was Tolkien and there was no Hermione in it, you are thinking of Harry Potter.

I think if you read my answer carefully you will see that I'm talking about two separate books. But because names are used in books, plural, it does not mean that they are invented.

I'm afraid for me it's always Amelia. The sound of the 'mealy' part in it is just hideous, plus as a medical word, it means 'absence of limbs'. How on earth it's so popular is astonishing.

Oh agree! And I dont get why its so popular either, it just seems so whiney

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 20/03/2026 21:03

I once met a boy called Solskjaer. It's not the worst as a collection of sounds, but (1) very obviously naming a child after a footballer will date him when he's older and probably make him some enemies among people who support the "wrong" teams, and (2) he still couldn't spell his own name when he was 7, so how did anybody else have a chance?

RafaFan · 20/03/2026 22:50

There was clearly a trend in Canada about 60 years ago for girls names ending in "da". In addition to the fairly common Rhonda and Wanda I've met women of a certain age named Kenda (also a Kendra), Fonda and Lornada.

I hate that name and the dad that named his daughter Lanesra which is spelt Arsenal backwards.

My daughter is called lanesra, she is 18 now, it’s a beautiful name and even better if your an Arsenal fan, she has had compliments on her name her whole life and I’m so glad I picked it 😁

I wonder if that was meant to be "Jael"? It's an Old Testament Biblical name.

There was a girl at my school called Jael, for many years (until I happened to see it written down) I thought she was called JL and wondered what that stood for. Probably Julie Louise or Jacqueline Louise I thought, given the time period.

Jailin
Veronica

Braden isnt bad.
Jeffrey, I think is a name that might become popular some day
Jailin, nah
Veronica. I absolutely love it. There was a really glamorous woman on our street when I was a child (1960s) she was called Veronica and the sound of her stiletto heels clickety-clacking as she walked made me want to be her 😊🥰😁

Even so, you do have to bear in mind the time and the place where you live. There was a beautiful young woman in the Old Testament called Abishag (sometimes rendered Avishag in English), but I don't hear of many baby girls called that now in English-speaking western countries!

Yukono · 17/04/2026 19:48

There’s a Jaël at my kids school. Pronounced Yaaaa ell.

Didn‘t know it was a biblical name.

It‘s quite a mouthful for a short name
