My mum wanted to call me charity.

I had forgotten about that one. I have a guider for over 25 years and have come across Charity, Tippi, Thora and Amity over the past couple of decades. None of which I like.

I knew two girls that were
named after random words in the dictionary because mum thought they looked nice and then changed the pronunciation along the lines of Enamel and Pyjamas but pronounced Enarmel and Peejarmay. I have also known sisters Angel and Trinity and brothers J & H.

How ridiculous! Before our DS was born, we got a book of 50,000 baby names - actual names for people - for about a fiver; although you could probably get a second-hand one from a charity shop or borrow it from the library.

You don't even have to sit down and look through it, if you don't want to. Open it at a random page and choose whichever name your eyes settle on first! Look at the very beginning of the the very first page and call your baby Aaron if you want!

Ironically, it must take a huge amount of very determined effort to deliberately go out of your way to avoid making the tiniest effort when finding a name for your child!!

Was at Uni with a guy called Mark.
His birth name was Meriadoc.
His parents were full on 'knit your own yoghurt' hippy types.
He was not.

Were his parents also Lord of the Rings fans as that is the given name of one of the Hobbits. Merry and Pippin are Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrine Took.

Hank Wankford.
The surname Rapey.

Thank Wangford is the stage name of Samuel Hutt and a jolly nice chap he is too!

NorthernDancer · 26/02/2026 14:51

Lebia, pronounced like, well, labia. Awkward.

Bacardi. I always wondered what part it had played in her conception.

I remember him from the 80s - he's also a gynaecologist!

Given that they had a cat called Butterbur, I think that is a safe bet.

So many beautiful names on here Magdalena,Valentina just beautiful.

I never understand why some names are ridiculed especially ones like that. Valentina and Valerie are great names for a February baby girl.

I have also seen a lot of names on here that are family names, so I’m not sure what that says about my family. I’m going to carry on reading all pages as I assume my own name will appear.

oh and the person who was going to have a little Hugo until midwife was rude. How awful!

many people are named after grandparents and great grandparents which is such a lovely tradition.

oh also someone said went to school with a caramel. It was probably Carmel ….I have male and female equivalents of that name in my great grand parents siblings. All of these names are stunning.

I'm afraid for me it's always Amelia. The sound of the 'mealy' part in it is just hideous, plus as a medical word, it means 'absence of limbs'. How on earth it's so popular is astonishing.

My friend has an Amelia, pronounced A - Mel - ia. I feel for her having to spend her life correcting people, but I think it’s much nicer than Ameeelia.

The poor child, constantly correcting people. Perhaps she should have chosen Amalia, which is similar and wouldn't need all the explanation!

Elae pronounced LA mother moaned they think her childs name is two letters. Said Dr called out E-lay. Which is how I would have thought it’s pronounced having one L.

Something popped up on my Facebook yesterday, a baby girl called Lakeland. They’re not in the UK so perhaps it doesn’t have the same kitchen supplies connotation where they are. It still gives ‘retirement complex’ or ‘suburban shopping mall’ though.

Oh that lovely

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/03/2026 20:11

I know it’s a nice name but I’ve always detested the name Ella for a girl.

loislovesstewie · 07/03/2026 20:14

Wasn't there a child called ABCD, said Absedey, whose mother became upset when someone laughed at the name?
Just checked It was Abcde.

SnowdropCrocus · 08/03/2026 00:01

I saw a video of some girls dancing in the US. One was called Chyla, which reminded me of the fatty bodily fluid chyle.

Gonksmum · 08/03/2026 00:05

There was an arty person/couple in the Guardian who called their child Spider.

KnickerlessParsons · 08/03/2026 00:15

I once had a Brownie in my unit called Bijou. She wasn’t at all bijou though.

Could they just not spell Gail?!

I'm convinced that some parents must literally hate their children and want to punish them their whole life for the crime of being born.
