Someone who loved Judge Dread was going to call child Dread. Thankfully was persuaded otherwise.

I remember reading a thread on here where five siblings had all been given the middle name Mary - as a confirmation name - even though they were all boys!

That was once quite common in Ireland, there was a family of four boys in our street who all had Mary as one of their names.

No doubt called her other son Prick.

That’s Rick with a silent P.

😂😂😂

Elon Musk’s child - X Æ A-12

or perhaps his other child Techno Mechanicus

Edited

I love Techno Mechanicus, can you imagine calling him in for tea… “Techno Techno Techno!” you could use glow sticks and a whistle! Grin

I thought it was a shortened of the German "National Socialist Party" (obviously the German spelling - which I am not going to attempt)

That is indeed the origin of "Nazi".

However, "Ignacio" is apparently the origin of "Nachos". A Mexican guy named Ignacio ("Nacio" for sort, "Nacho" when gringos try to pronounce it) had a bar and made cheesy tortilla chips as a snack for his customers.

Not really. The title is "the worst name you have ever come across".
Those 3 names are perfectly ordinary names.
I wouldn't name my child something like Humphrey, Gertrude or Stanley because I simply don't like them. I might think to myself "poor kid" but they are normal names.
There's a difference between a name that not to your taste vs a name like Naziboy or Pineapple.

Brayden is an ordinary name? Where??? It’s hideous

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 13/02/2026 17:10

I don't know if she was serious or just making it up to get in the magazine and earn some money... but I remember a woman in Take A Break from probably 30+ years ago, in their "You called them what?!" feature.

She wanted to call her DD Caitlyn, but instead of using one of the two or three standard variants, she called her KVIIIIin - including Roman numerals for 8 in the middle.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 13/02/2026 17:15

My husband’s name. It was also his father’s name, his grandfathers and great grandfathers. Maybe even further back, we don’t know. It stopped with us when we had DS1 and 2. His middle name is Malcolm which he goes by, that’s how bad his first name is!!

My mother wanted to call me Orianna after a character in a book she read while pregnant. Thank goodness my father was more practical. It sounds like something you would name a cruise ship!

It IS something you’d name a cruise ship!
P&O had a cruise ship in the 1970s called the Orianna. I went on it as a child.

Brayden is fairly normal for 2026.
I don't know it's origins - maybe a surname originally?
I wouldn't choose it for a child of mine but I also wouldn't bat an eyelid at someone else choosing the name.

In some countries (Czech Rep being one of them) people aren’t allowed to name their babies anything they like. Names can be vetoed. I think that’s very sensible.

I googled....
It's the 455th most popular name in the UK. It evolved from an Irish word.
It's more popular in North American countries.
Seriously.... it's just a modern name. You might not like it but it's certainly not "hideous".
This thread is getting weird. Perfectly normal names that just aren't to people's taste can't possibly be the "worst name you have ever heard"?
I know some children with what I personally consider ugly names - but they are regular names.

I remember someone wrote in to that having called their child Savlon.

No, there were no 'quote' marks. It may look odd to you, but it's a plural so correct with no apostrophe. These name threads are usually peppered with the damn things. I just cracked at that one!

Yeah, as I said, I am aware of correct grammar, and the quote marks were added around ‘Destiny’ in my second post to try to separate the ‘s’ without using an apostrophe. Anyhow - boring discussion and nowt to do with original question.

twoshedsjackson · 13/02/2026 19:46

Going off-topic slightly, but an urban myth that made me giggle.
Back in the day when having the baby "done" was much more common, and families might attend with a baby to be baptized at a regular baptism service with less warning, one family turned up with a little bundle of joy.
The vicar asked the customary "name this child" question, to be told "Spindonna"
A little bemused, but accustomed to "original" baby names, he duly sprinkled the tot, pronouncing, "Spindonna, I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost".
Cue indignant outcry from the parents, who had unfortunately mumbled when drawing the vicar's attention to the little one's name which had been attached to her christening gown, "It's pinned on her".

I know someone who called their son Boy.

The current MP for Uxbridge ((Boris Johnson's former constituency) is called Danny Boy Beales.

Mind you, that's not as bad as having the middle name De Pfeffel!

ToWhitToWhoo · 14/02/2026 00:32

I once met someone called Xantippe.

The mum had absolutely no idea, just heard it one day and thought it was nice!

If this was in the U.K., you’d think the Registrar might have said something! ‘Er, you do realise that’s a name of Satan, aka the devil?

Sad to say, I’d think it unwise ever to underestimate sad levels of ignorance.

Crazy isn’t it! She was an ex colleague of a friend. Even if she didn’t know the relevance, you’d think someone in her circle would have known and said something

Yes, see also the PP who was horrified at the idea of somebody named Beverley and being expected to address her as such!

I'd say there are standard names, slightly out-there names and ridiculous names. You personally may dislike a name from any of those three categories; but they're still hardly worthy of mention if they're from the first two categories.

I had to advise a colleague that it wasn't said Anay! She insisted it was and was completely unaware that ' the 2 dots changed how it was pronounced' I had to say 2 dots as she didn't understand the term I used for that. ( diaereses) Or that the s was pronounced.
