Someone who loved Judge Dread was going to call child Dread. Thankfully was persuaded otherwise.

One of the girls I think from Geordie shore has a Kixi - I believe pronounced Kick-see

Her daughter is called Pixi.

@Foundress it was true. As was the poir girl I came across many years ago called Holly Mackrell.

😂
I once taught a Saffron Lamb. Always made me hungry.

I forgot about this one this has to be the worst I have come across Tierney. It doesn't look that bad written down but try saying it. I've heard some pronounce it Teeney.

Keegan, in honour of Kevin Keegan. He’s early/mid 20’s now and goes by his middle name of Kieron, after Kieron Dyer. Dad was a big Newcastle United fan.

Didn't a Liverpool fan once name their child after all 11 players of the winning team?

If so many MNers dislike the way-out names, would they support a system that exists in some countries where some names are not allowed? I believe that New Zealand has such a system.

Brian O'Brien
Patrick Fitzpatrick

Why oh why would anyway give someone the same name twice?

Also knew a guy called Draco - full name Dracula. He was an accountant which didn't help.

The footballing and netballing Neville family had a father called Neville Neville, my brother knew him in their youth.

Neveah was very popular a few years ago. ( Heaven spelled backwards) It just reminded me of Nivea moisturising cream.

It's spelt Nevaeh. That's the only way it's 'heaven backwards'.

I’ve come across a few Destiny’s.
I think it’s a nice name.

Destinys. No apostrophe is needed!

Myfluffyblanket · 13/02/2026 01:30

Argentina did, not sure about now and every girl had to be Maria + another name. My friend was one of three sisters and when the father registered their births refused point blank to have Maria and said each time he would call them 1,2 and three. He got his way.

There's an Arsenal fan who called his daughter Lanesra. I don't know why the mother didn't veto that.

My cousin has a daughter called Hunni-bee. The poor kid is 18 now and goes by H to everyone.

IMO it’s high time registrars had the right to refuse daft names that amount to child abuse!

amy480 · 13/02/2026 08:33

I was on a train many years ago and overheard the mum calling her daughter Chardonnay. Very footballers wives!

You clearly need to watch him.

Is that a wind up?

Ragged · 13/02/2026 08:40

I was horrified by Grayson when I first heard of girls being called that.

I met a (boy) Saguaro on a California beach about 20 years ago. I've often wondered how he got on. What nickname? Maybe his middle name is John. His mom failed to convince me on merits of barefoot shoes.

There was a Tinkerbell at my naturalisation ceremony. I've come round to that one, actually, Tink is a cute NN.

Mischance · 13/02/2026 08:48

A black patient of mine called their child Melena, which is the medical term for black stool caused by bleeding in the gut. It seemed unfortunate but hopefully the medical use is not generally known. I understand it is a common Greek name. She was very happy with it!

My mum was due on Valentine's Day so her parents planned to call her Valentina! I think that would have been pretty bad. Luckily she was late.

I love the name Valentina!

Mischance · 13/02/2026 08:53

My friend's son is called Clay. He's a very down-to-earth kind of guy!

Roaminginthegloaming · 13/02/2026 08:53

My daughter attended school with a boy from the Philippines - his name was Gaylord. (Apparently it’s not an uncommon name there).

We lived in Singapore for a few years and one acquaintance of Chinese ethnicity was called Ng for a forename and his surname was also Ng. (Ng Ng).

I worked overseas for a bit and children were allowed to use a westernised name instead of their original name. Most families encouraged sensible choices but a couple let the (young) children pick.

I taught a Terminator and a Jumbo. Needless to say, as they got older, they realised the error of their ways and picked sensible names.

Similar situation teaching abroad and I taught a Golf and a Bank. I think they just chose English words instead of English names.

SnowdropCrocus · 13/02/2026 09:08

I saw a family online with a daughter called Trendy

WhosMadeline · 13/02/2026 09:13

In the UK I once taught 3 boys Jayden, Kayden and Brayden all in the same Y8 class.

WhosMadeline · 13/02/2026 09:13

In the same school we also had a Layden.
