Someone who loved Judge Dread was going to call child Dread. Thankfully was persuaded otherwise.

Well this is a nice positive thread.

My youngest son has one of the most hated names on mumsnet so I'm prepared to see that one pop up.
I almost changed it when he was little but glad I didn't as he loves it as much as I do.

I’m an ex-teacher, so have seen some awful names. However, I would never be rude enough to share them. The only time it is appropriate to make negative comments about names is if one is asked for views before the baby is named.

pixieee · 12/02/2026 12:00

Someone was asking about Busby on here the other day, I thought that was pretty bad. There are a couple of other infamous ones on here but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

ToadRage · 12/02/2026 12:12

If I was born a boy I would have been called Gilbert, thank the Lord i was born a girl and my Mum was around to veto Dad's preferred names which were Margaret and Frances. Margaret isn't so bad cos it can be shortened to Maggie which I like, but I can't stand Frances or Fran for that matter.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 12/02/2026 12:13

It’s the ones that are deliberately misspelled to look “unique” that are really bad. The poor kid is going to have to explain that forever!

Walkacrossthesand · 12/02/2026 12:14

Well, I heard of a child whose parents had named him Mason but insisted it was spelt with an ‘i’ after the a - anyone who knew any French at all, blinked a bit.

AquaticWarbler · 12/02/2026 12:16

My mum was due on Valentine's Day so her parents planned to call her Valentina! I think that would have been pretty bad. Luckily she was late.

Needmorelego · 12/02/2026 12:16

I would be shocked (and concerned) if someone named their child Adolf or similar.
But other than that I really don't care what names people choose.
Edit : Ok I do sometimes think "poor kid" if a name has a daft spelling or it's what I personally think is an ugly name - but I wouldn't actually say anything to the parents.

I have an Italian friend called Valentina - it's a lovely name!

EachotherAndAnother · 12/02/2026 12:19

I'm just here waiting for someone whose mate knows someone who called their baby La-a... 🙄

She probably would have ended up known as Val or Tina so it's not really that awful.

TheMoanerLisa · 12/02/2026 12:22

My mother wanted to call me Orianna after a character in a book she read while pregnant. Thank goodness my father was more practical. It sounds like something you would name a cruise ship!

BetterOffNow · 12/02/2026 12:23

Someone told me a story of how DS1 was named Shaun (pronounced shorn) and DS2 was named Sean (pronounced seen) - thought that was awful, if more than a bit funny!

CheeseWisely · 12/02/2026 12:25

Something popped up on my Facebook yesterday, a baby girl called Lakeland. They’re not in the UK so perhaps it doesn’t have the same kitchen supplies connotation where they are. It still gives ‘retirement complex’ or ‘suburban shopping mall’ though.

I think that sounds beautiful 🤷

I worked overseas for a bit and children were allowed to use a westernised name instead of their original name. Most families encouraged sensible choices but a couple let the (young) children pick.

I taught a Terminator and a Jumbo. Needless to say, as they got older, they realised the error of their ways and picked sensible names.

YesSirICanNameChange · 12/02/2026 12:31

Balonz.

I think it's a Marmite name though, some love it, it's just not for me. Too traditional.

AquaticWarbler · 12/02/2026 12:31

Sorry I just meant that being called Valentina and having a Valentine's Day birthday would be bad IMO. Not the name itself.

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 12/02/2026 12:33

If I’d been a boy I was going to be named Ernest Hagar, (after my two grandads). I’m all kinds of grateful I am female. It’s not ‘the worst’ name out there, but it would have been a bold choice, even in 1964! 😂🥴

(No hate to all the Ernies/Hagars out there 👌🏻)

ChefsKisser · 12/02/2026 12:35

I was in M&S foodhall of all place and a young woman was calling to her toddler to come over and he was called Emperor. probably the worst I've heard...

55larry · 12/02/2026 12:36

My mother was born on Valentine’s Day and she had Valentine as her middle name. She hated the name but fortunately it was her second name. Her first name was Beryl which she didn’t really like either.

Additup · 12/02/2026 12:41

Malena.
For those not in the know Melena (pronounced the same( means black, tarry poo which indicate intestinal bleeding).

I know someone named Nazi...

I met a little girl called Trinity once named after the nightclub in our town 😂 she had a friend called Saffron.
I was 18 at the time and thought they were wild names.
I’m older now and appreciate unusual names but I do wince at the Kimberleigh, Jaidenn type names with extra letters.
