I know it's known as a cleaning product etc etc but that doesn't bother me. I think I quite like it as it's unique.

What are your thoughts on Ajax?
Nickname AJ

Goes with my other little one so Otis and Ajax?

If you're after a well-known British brand from the past few decades with a strong 'ja' sound in it, how about Bejam?

Maddy70 · 31/08/2025 22:59

No. It's a cleaning product

BourgeoisBabe · 31/08/2025 23:21

JammieDodger94 · 31/08/2025 20:21

A Jack's

I think the other pronunciation is more standard? That's what I would try first anyway

Mrsbunnychops · 31/08/2025 20:33

It’s meant to be pronounced I Axe I think as I remember from my Greek Classics lessons - I think it would permanently be mispronounced though which would do my head in! Also, the cleaning product name would put me off, sorry

I thought it was Ay-ax, so that's four possible pronunciations so far!

PersephonePomegranate · 01/09/2025 06:44

How about Agamemnon instead? Can't see any problems there 😂

Velvian · 01/09/2025 06:51

I'm not from the US either @JammieDodger94, but I know it as a cleaning product. As PP says, it's not even a nice sound that would go some way to overriding cleaning product.

Your child will not thank you for it.

AngelofIslington · 01/09/2025 07:07

I think you may have issues with the pronunciation.
Id think it was I ax if is saw it written down, to differentiate it from the cleaning product

theyoungishman · 01/09/2025 07:09

How about Windex?

Sal17690 · 01/09/2025 07:21

I love Otis, it was on my boys list. Have you considered

Otis and Milo
Otis and Leo
Otis and Beau
Otis and Felix
Otis and Kit?

MindytheWonderHorse · 01/09/2025 07:29

The football team is Eye-ax. The Greek hero is usually A-jacks in English, as is the cleaning product.

cheesycheesy · 01/09/2025 07:31

I’m English but still think toilet cleaner

susiedaisy1912 · 01/09/2025 07:34

It’s a gritty powder for cleaning bathrooms.

HsbsGdoG · 01/09/2025 07:43

Absolutely not. It’s a Dutch football team, he will get people pronouncing it I-axe constantly. Would you name him Arsenal or Manchester United? You could use something that would give you the initials AJ if you like that e.g. Anthony John, Aidan James.

freerangethighs · 01/09/2025 07:45

I'm not really seeing Ajax > AJ, but I can definitely see a child with the initials A. J. going by Ajax. Any A. J. would do: Achilles Jason, Aeneas Jamshid, Alexander Jimmu?

TubeScreamer · 01/09/2025 07:48

I think football club (even as someone with zero interest in football)

you, and later he, will forever be explaining and spelling it to other people.

Ddakji · 01/09/2025 07:49

Pharazon · 31/08/2025 21:51

Surely most people would associate it with the Ancient Greek hero or the football club rather than a cleaning product which has not been available in UK supermarkets for decades.

I think posters forget that the children who will grow up with little Ajax won’t have the same cultural references. Of course, they might have unpleasant stupid parents or grandparents who can’t stop themselves when they hear about little Ajax and start wittering on about bleach.

@JammieDodger94 Ajax is the romanised form of the name. In Greek it is Aias. But I’m not sure that’ll work so well.

Louisetopaz21 · 01/09/2025 07:51

I wouldn't he would get teased at school and when he is a adult

LizzieSiddal · 01/09/2025 07:57

JammieDodger94 · 31/08/2025 20:30

I'm not from the US so it's not very well known as a cleaning product where I am

It was a cleaning product in the UK, not so long ago! My mum used it.

Thingyfanding · 01/09/2025 08:06

How about Cosmo instead? It goes well with Otis. It’s still unusual but not try hard like Ajax.

CeciliaDuckiePond · 01/09/2025 08:11

You could also consider 'Harpic' or 'Toilet Duck' 😃

lol Cosmo is probably a No from all the Seinfeld fans but preferable to Ajax at least.

I know OP has gone quiet but hopefully she’ll listen to the advice she requested.

@JammieDodger94 Thing is, even if the little kids won’t know about Ajax as a cleaning product, the grans, aunties etc will and when kids mention their friends you just know they will laugh about it an that’s how it will get back to the other kids that so and so has a funny name. So why put your kid through that when there’s so many other amazing options?!

BoudiccaRuled · 01/09/2025 08:24

There are plenty of other good names from Greek Myths&Legends that aren't also synonymous with toilet cleaners, obviously they are not "unique" but neither is Ajax.
Most of them are a bit long but can be shortened to good nicknames. Or there's always Jason or Odysseus.

I’m from the Uk. It’s well known as a cleaning product. As evidenced by this thread.

Your child will be mercilessly teased over this connection for life. Please don’t do it.

WildCherryBlossom · 01/09/2025 08:32

You can call his little sister Lenor

Edited

Cosmo is a pretty common name in Italy. Nigella Lawson and Scarlet Johanson called their boys Cosmo.
