We’re struggling. Love Morris! We like “posh” boy names. But our friends have used many of the names we love.

Dancing

Huggersunite · 04/07/2025 18:58

Is the name not Maurice, I’d have said Morris is a surname.

boysmuminherts · 04/07/2025 18:58

I'm not the biggest fan of surnames as first names, sorry.

Gurgletum · 04/07/2025 18:58

Op how old is your baby?

Sparkiest · 04/07/2025 18:59

Maurice Is dreadful and Morris is worse.

distinctpossibility · 04/07/2025 18:59

I'd spell it Maurice as a first name, but it's fine. Kind of in keeping with the retro revival but less commonplace than Arthur and Percy. Why not?

Agreed. Morris is not a first name.

tartyflette · 04/07/2025 19:00

I always thought it was spelled Maurice (differentiates it from the car, if nothing else) and you can say it in a beautiful French accent, like Maurice Chevalier.

This! I like Maurice! Quite a elegant, sophisticated vibe to it!

MrsBucketHat · 04/07/2025 19:01

The Space Cowboy?

Moreteaandchocolate · 04/07/2025 19:05

My first reaction is I’m not keen, but it could grow on me.

RachelsPeeves · 04/07/2025 19:08

Minor

Agreed. Morris is not a first name.

It is if she gives it to her child. Things change.

wafflesmgee · 04/07/2025 19:14

How about Horatio shortened to horace? Then it’s an actual name rather than surname? Maurice just makes me think everyone will say it is a faulty towers “ManWellll” kind of accent
morris spelt this way is definitely dancer or minor too… I think there are nicer names out there

InMySpareTime · 04/07/2025 19:17

There’s someone in my church called Morris Morris so it’s been a legitimate first name for at least 80 years. Every time I see his name I think “so good they named him twice”

PerkyGreenCat · 04/07/2025 19:18

I think it's a great choice for an 80 year old man!

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 04/07/2025 19:19

Is your surname Minor?

Needs to be Maurice if you are aiming for posh, Morris is the surname.

I am not crazy about it, but early 20th century names are in, and I met a 16 year old Cyril recently, so what do I know..

GreenMarigold · 04/07/2025 19:19

Reminds me of the main character in Ideal!

JaneEyre40 · 04/07/2025 19:09

It is if she gives it to her child. Things change.

She’s aiming for posh though, so she means Maurice, like the novel. Morris isn’t going to give that vibe.

InMySpareTime · 04/07/2025 19:21

Interestingly, on this name statistics site, in 2023 there were the same number of babies named Morris and Maurice (13 each)

British Leyland dropped the Morris brand almost 40 years ago, because it sounded fuddy-duddy even then.

WitcheryDivine · 04/07/2025 19:24

I’ve only ever known it as an animal name but if I met a baby Morris I would think it was a good name. I like Mori/Mauri as a nickname.

Given that names tend to peak in popularity in 100-year (ish) cycles, it would make perfect sense that a name which is due a comeback sounded old-fashioned 40 years ago!

HeCharters · 04/07/2025 19:57

I know a Maurice (Morris not Mo-reece) and a Morris.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 04/07/2025 20:04

He could grow up to be a joker, or a smoker or a midnight toker
