I’ve always loved the name Thomas but is it too much with our surname?

Yes !!! You already have the name Thomas in your name.

ScrewedByFunding · 18/06/2025 08:17

He'll be nicknamed TomTom.

Slowgrowingelm · 18/06/2025 08:18

It is definitely too much.

fourelementary · 18/06/2025 08:18

Yes. But as a nurse I currently have two similarly named gentleman in my care- same first name as last but with son on the end. So it’s clearly not impossible to do.

ScrewedByFunding · 18/06/2025 08:17

He'll be nicknamed TomTom.

Exactly what I was going to say

AmyDuPlantier · 18/06/2025 08:18

I know two Donald McDonalds and everyone gives that choice an eyebrow raise.

There are millions of names to choose from, literally millions. Don’t give him the same name twice!

feelingbleh · 18/06/2025 08:18

Yes 🤣🤣

Ihaveacatwhoisfat · 18/06/2025 08:19

Don’t be silly.

Baguettesandcheeseforever · 18/06/2025 08:20

Please don’t. I taught a kid with a similar name , think James Jameson and every time he got an award in assembly the kids laughed, no matter how hard we worked on speaking to children about not laughing. In the end he asked for a middle name and we would read out certificates either just his first and middle name. He hated his name and it caused him so many problems

SouthLondonMum22 · 18/06/2025 08:20

Of course it is. If you must, use Thomas as a middle name but there are so many names out there that aren't so close to Thompson.

Fringle · 18/06/2025 08:21

On balance, probably not.

But I do like Tommy Thompson. Cute. (Though possibly reminiscent of the Harry Enfield sketch with a pre-war Arsenal player, Charles ‘Charlie’ Charles.)

I’d have thought you all go through life with enough hassle already from Thomson/Thompson.

ZaZathecat · 18/06/2025 08:23

No it's fine

Torkieshorkie · 18/06/2025 08:32

It’s ok but I feel you could be more imaginative

PermanentTemporary · 18/06/2025 08:34

Sorry I think it’s a bad idea. It can’t be the only name you like?

dontcomeatme · 18/06/2025 08:36

I knew a Shannon Bannon poor soul. Don't call your son Thomas x

Gardendiary · 18/06/2025 08:37

Yes. Don’t do it.

IhaveanewTVnow · 18/06/2025 08:38

Call him James Thomas Thomson. Much better. 🤣

ArcticBells · 18/06/2025 08:38

Yes , it’s like Magnus Magnusson and you wonder why anyone would do that

SlugsWon · 18/06/2025 08:39

I know a few Huw Huws....

SlenderRations · 18/06/2025 08:40

Quite normal if you are Scandinavian. But otherwise, pull yourself together

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/06/2025 08:41

I think it's OK. I have taught children with similar combinations of name and it was impossible not to use both names though. He would always be Thomas Thompson never just Tom.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/06/2025 08:42

ArcticBells · 18/06/2025 08:38

Yes , it’s like Magnus Magnusson and you wonder why anyone would do that

Because he's from Iceland. He is is Magnus son of Magnus. Icelandic names always have the parent's name and end in son or dottir

Christwosheds · 18/06/2025 08:43

like pp I also like Tommy Thomson.
Could he have Tommy as a nickname ? Eg David “Tommy” Thomson .
I think Thomas Thomson has charm actually.

Ohplesandbanonos · 18/06/2025 08:47

He'll be TomTom before he leaves primary school. Some parent will inadvertently say it in earshot of their child and it will stick.

There are so many other names, don't choose that one!

Names that are similar to Thomas in my mind are: James, Matthew, Oliver, Ethan, Benjamin - not sure why but they correlate in my mind Smile

Midnightlove · 18/06/2025 08:50

I knew of a Johnny Johnson 🤷‍♀️ seemed a bit odd at first, people get used to it quickly
