Cosmo as a baby name?

Having a baby boy. Is Cosmo cool or too much? Our surname begins with a “C” too.

It immediately makes me think of the character from Fairly Odd Parents so it would be a no from me because of that.

I don’t think it sounds remotely posh though and I do really like Cosimo as PPs have suggested, although I can’t imagine it flowing well with any typically british surnames so that might be something to consider if that’s the case for you

It has a really cool sound - and would make a fab middle name or even a nickname for a boy who adored everything to do with Space (and seemingly a lot of young boys go through a Space phase, if it’s not Dino’s or Vehicles).

But I think as a first name it’s a bit limiting for him unless you somehow know he’s going to be arty, preferably always live in a big multicultural city, have a more UC social set etc. I personally tend to sway towards names which sound like they could fit in on both a building site and a judge’s chambers for an easier life and I’m not sure Cosmo fits that brief.

You’re right — her daughter is Cosima, (and apparently used to be known as Mimi. A friend of mine taught her years back.) Much nicer than Cosmo.

I actually quite like it.

My daughter has a friend called Cosmo and he's lovely, as are his family. They are both at state school and there has been no bullying about it.

That's really sad. My kid(s) have slighty unusual names amd go(went) to a rough ass state school. They have never been bullied about their names and they are certainly not the only ones with unusual or heaven forbid - forgien names 🤯

I’m not sure if you’re aware but both the magazine and cocktail refer to a shortened version of the very different word ‘cosmopolitan’. Cosmo as a name however means something quite different and has been used in the UK since the late 1700‘s. Whilst not common, I’m not sure anything should be locked until it’s understood.

There was an Archbishop, Cosmo Lang

A friend called their child Cosmo. I thought it was awful at the time tbh but now it really suits him and I think it's lovely

My sil had a very grumpy Jack Russell called Cosmo who I absolutely adored so I'm a fan!

It's an old name, so not really one I think of as "cool."

ETA my first thought is always Cosimo di Medici, who, while remarkable in some ways, doesn't really tick the cool box! I think it's just a variant of that isn't it?

I really don't think the new money thing is fair. It's a pretty old European name. In fact, Medici money is some of the oldest serious money that has been.

Cosmo is a perfectly solid name although it definitely gives very posh vibes in the UK.

Cosimo, in Italy, sounds a bit different, to my ears you might expect an English equivalent to be something like… Francis, Hugh, Edmund, thst sort of name: uncommon, probably not working class and sort of solid more than anything else.

Personally I’d go with the Italian spelling: Cosimo. Cosmo to me is quite an eccentric name, not bad at all, but it has a very definite vibe of posh and could be hard to carry off depending on social milieu. I have a regular work contact called Cosmo, he is really very pleasant but undeniably quite posh.

That's interesting your take on the different vibe between UK and Italy. I don't know Italy well enough to have understood that but it makes sense.

Cosmo is a great name - cool, classic and not overused.

People make/become their names, not the other way around.
