Having a baby boy. Is Cosmo cool or too much? Our surname begins with a ā€œCā€ too.

There’s a boy in my DC’s class called Cosmo and I genuinely thought it was a nickname and said on the class group when saying thank you to his mum for something ā€œSorry, I don’t know his real name!ā€ šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø
It gets quite a few raised eyebrows and people saying ā€œDid you just say Cosmo?!?! That’s his name?!ā€

Could be a nickname for Cosmopolitan? šŸ¤”šŸ¤£

šŸ˜‚ lol
yea lovely name for a dog!!! crap for a child!

ChocolateGanache · 31/05/2025 16:56

So in terms of the origins OP…

Yes, Cosmo can be considered an Italian name, specifically a short form of the Italian name Cosimo. The name Cosmo, and its Italian form Cosimo, is derived from the Ancient Greek word "kosmos," meaning "order, the universe, or the world". While Cosmo is also an English name, its origins are tied to the Greek and Italian name Cosimo.

It’s a cute name with a lovely meaning OP šŸ™ŒšŸ™ŒšŸ™Œ

Yes, it's the perfect choice: if you want a truly awful name!

I suppose you could always go for something tediously dull like Ben, Sam, Tom, John, William, Alexander, Oliver…. SNORE!!!! šŸ’¤

Vitrolinsanity · 31/05/2025 17:06

If you’re a Jilly fan, Cosmo was an evil little shit.

Enough4me · 31/05/2025 17:08

OP is it on a list with other options and could be a middle name?

tostaky · 31/05/2025 17:09

we did consider Cosmo for our son and my DP even sent a text to our friend and family with this name. But after a coupld of hours i changed it to Aurelien (very french) and i am pleased i did. My son, now 15, is also glad we didnt call him that!
cosmo are pretty flowers

ThatPeachSquid · 31/05/2025 17:10

Yeah I’m actually leaning towards middle name now! Funny/useful to see everyone’s reaction though. Clearly a very divisive name!

To me, Cosmo is very much a Hooray Henry wearing red trousers in the patrons' enclosure at all the British summer events. He goes to Ascot, Henley and the Boat Race. No idea what he does in the winter though.

@ThatPeachSquid its a no from me as it just makes me think about Cosmo Kramer in Seinfeld and how everyone only knew him by his surname as he spent years hiding his first name as even he (a very eccentric character who provided much of the humour!) saw it as an absurd name šŸ˜…

It would be helpful to know what you consider beautiful names, so as to be able to judge your comment.

Can you afford to send little Cosmo to a private school?

Because round our way you'd get seriously bullied for being a posh git with a name like that in any of the state schools.

Why be so vitriolic? What has happened to you to make you respond in that way to the idea of a child, a child! - with a name you are unfamiliar with?

coxesorangepippin · 31/05/2025 18:09

Well basically you need to be like the Mitfords really to handle a name like that

NonComm · 31/05/2025 18:12

Makes me think of a Les Dawson character called Cosmo Smallpiece. (Really showing my age here….)

Anyone remember "Cosmo and Dibs"?

"Cosmo" was also the name of an Archbishop of Canterbury.

That's what I was planning to post!

I LOVED Cosmo and Dibs, and I wish my pre schooler grandkids had access to their wisdom and sweetness.

Maddy70 · 31/05/2025 18:13

My friends son is called that. It suits him although I'd I'm honest I didn't like it at first. It's shortened to Cossie a lot so make sure you like that too

Laura931 · 31/05/2025 18:15

Fine if Italian. I also love Cosima but not Italian so we didn’t go for it.

ZenNudist · 31/05/2025 18:22

I like it. I work with cosmas nn cosmo. He is from Zimbabwe. Nigella Lawson called her ds cosmo.

mathanxiety · 31/05/2025 18:23

Love it - I think it's very cool.

ginasevern · 31/05/2025 18:39

The true Italian name would be Cosimo which I much prefer to Cosmo.

Holly485 · 31/05/2025 19:14

Great for a magazine or an alcoholic drink, awful for a child IMO. Something someone in Hollywood would call their child.

Allswellandgood · 31/05/2025 19:57

I went to school with two Cosmos, and one of our neighbours, a man and his sixties, is also Cosmo.
There have always been a lot of people of Italian heritage where I live, but like English names they have their time of popularity, I think Cosmo wouldn't be a particularly popular name for parents of Italian heritage who are naming their DCs today.
However if you're looking for a unique name that holds historical and cultural value in Italy, Cosmo would be the one.

I am also shocked at how you’re raising your children so that they feel the need to bully others with unusual names?!

Where do you live?
