Having a baby boy. Is Cosmo cool or too much? Our surname begins with a ā€œCā€ too.

I am also shocked at how you’re raising your children so that they feel the need to bully others with unusual names?!

Where do you live?

Dont be ridiculous! I'm not raising my childen to feel the need to bully others. You've misunderstood entirely. I do not have young children. I'm saying that the schools round here are rough and a name like Cosmo would make you a target for bullies.

I live in a pretty deprived Northern area.

Love love love it!

So parents shouldn’t try and and just pick a top 10 name?

i certainly wish my parents had tried a little harder!

There’s a world of difference between a top ten name and one that’s trying too hard. Although there’s nothing wrong with a top ten name. My husband has a top 10 name of his generation. At uni, 15% of our course had his name! He’s never the only one with the name in a social situation. I actually don’t think he’s ever noticed.

Im grateful that my name is reasonably easy to spell as my surname always needs to
be spelled and I’d go mad if I had to spell my first name too. I’ve known several adults with very unusual names. One changed it the minute his mother died and another only ever used his second name. He was so embarrassed by his first name he refused to disclose it!

I like it. I work with cosmas nn cosmo. He is from Zimbabwe. Nigella Lawson called her ds cosmo.

@ZenNudist Nigella’s son is called Bruno

EveSix · 31/05/2025 21:30

Really love it.

Tbrh · 31/05/2025 21:30

It's a cats name

No. She called her daughter Cosima.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 31/05/2025 21:32

Cosmo Kramer?
That’s my immediate thought so it would be a no from me.

Lavendersong · 31/05/2025 21:34

It’s just a name

if you love it use it

it sounds more like a nickname to me so I’d probably give him a more traditional name and use Cosmo as his day to day name if that makes sense

Berlinlover · 31/05/2025 21:36

Awful.

geoger · 31/05/2025 21:38

I really like it. You could also use Cosimo or the Greek version which is Kosmas.
Love Cosima for a girl

Do kids really bully those with ā€˜posh’ names? Why? I struggle to see what’s bully worthy?

I can see how William might be bullied with Willy or Benedict with Bendy Dick etc, but Cosmo? I’m genuinely intrigued why your kids would do that?

My kids go to a rough school, lots of the kids have very unusual names. Cosmo would fit right in.
I got teased for being posh in school because I called my Grandmother Grandma not Nana or Nain and I said scone to rhyme with cone.

@ThatPeachSquid as you asked - not a fan as it reminds me too much of Cosmopolitan - a very popular magazine in my day! Mind you, I really like the name Guy which is also divisive.

Imagine your son going for a job interview and what impression his name might conjure up to his prospective employer.

I wanted our cat to be called Cosmo. DH vetoed it. Cat has Cosmo as a middle name.

Our cats middle name is Cosmo too! (He is JC). I actually love this name. Considered it for a boys name back
in the 80’s before Cosmo Kramer, but I only ever had one Dd.

LaLaLaLavaChChChChicken · 01/06/2025 01:40

I too loved Cosmo and Dibs!

There is a boy at DS2’s school whose surname starts Cos…. And Cos / Coz is his nickname. He’s pretty cool.

Gattopard · 01/06/2025 19:53

Is ā€˜posh’ a positive, neutral or negative aspect?

Will people/employers regard people with such names negatively or positively, or, ideally, neutrally?

I’m curious why it matters so as to be pointed out?

Overthebow · 01/06/2025 20:00

The first thing I think of when I hear this name is the cocktail.

AlertCat · 01/06/2025 20:56

There was an awful braying Cosmo with a competitive-parenting wife in Bridget Jones, so for me the name is indelibly linked with that association. As a sound, it’s quite nice! But I couldn’t get past the association, personally.

It’s a positive to some people and a negative to others I think, so your question is too hard to answer.

Mademetoxic · 02/06/2025 10:41

Is this a joke thread 🤣🤣🤣 what a stupid name for a human.
For a cat, a great name!

PurpleReindeer2 · 02/06/2025 11:12

Sorry OP but I really think it's OK to call a pet but not your son.

Why might it be negative?

I’m genuinely intrigued, as I’m not from the UK originally and personally would never have any negative thoughts against any child whose parents chose ā€˜posh’ names for them?

People might find a very posh sounding name pretentious. They might think if someone is trying very hard to seem posh that this is because they look down on less posh people or that they desperately want to social climb. Or they might just think they wouldn’t fit in with such a posh person. Stuff like that. These are not my personal views though; I like the name.

Interesting, thanks! A lot of assumptions being made there…. Hopefully most people are more open minded (and no, i don’t have a Cosmo!)
