sorry havent read the whole thread but i dont have a problem with that name if its what you like - its not like everyone in the class will have totally traditional names and yours will be the only unusual one - things have moved on.

ex[at - my ds is a struan - its a great name although surprisingly few people have heard of it before - love the spelling of your girls name though - didnt know it was splet like that.

conkertree · 20/05/2008 20:40

expat and spelt obviously

vermilion · 20/05/2008 20:45

Presiley Baxendale managed to become (gasp!) a QC. don't think it matters what lawyers are called so much as what accent they have. Kennedi with perfect RP stands a better chance than Sarah from Dudley. Class and poise are all, ladies.

Expat - that is my favourite word, how DID you know?
Dont think it would make a very good name though. Maybe if I spelt it with an I?

geezabreak · 20/05/2008 20:59

The only Kennedy that I've known was a boy, quite posh, and his dad was Kennedy too. I like surnames as first names- quite common in Scotland to have mum/gran's surname as first name. I didn't do it to my dcs, but know plenty who have- no-one bats an eye at it here.

posieparker · 20/05/2008 21:03

Sarah kennedy is on before Wogan!

ElizabethBeresford · 20/05/2008 21:11

Fallen, I think it's essential research. I did it. I knew what I liked, but I wanted to know what other people thought. It didn't sway me, but it was a factor and helped narrow down some long lists.

I did ask my Mum and some friends their opinion but that can be too emotional or too personal. You can't tell your friend that you'd never use Chloe because it's too popular if her daughter is called Sophie (for the record, two very pretty names, nothing against either of them). And if for eg, I was mulling over a name like Hazel or Edith, I would be more interested in the comments from mothers of Elsas or Ivys.

On these boards you get opinions on the NAMES and no sucking up or not snippy put down, and no sub-conscious praise or criticism on the rest ofyour lifestyle choices. do you see what I mean?

it will end up as ken or kenny, if you like those then okay!

WestCountryLass · 20/05/2008 21:24

People that I know that have DDs called Taylor, have other DDs called Paige, Lauren and Roxanne. Do you like any of those.

Kennedee/Kennedy, NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Kennedy, if you must...

WestCountryLass · 20/05/2008 21:28

sorry, that was a NO to the Kennedi with an i.

cupcakesinthesnow · 20/05/2008 21:44

I like the name Kennedy very much and imo i think of it first as a female name.

I think it matters not one iota if some have a problem with first names being 'surnames'. Variety is the spice of life and how boring a world it would be if it were a pre-requisite that all new babies should only be given a name that could be found on the personalised keychiains/pens/mugs at Clinton Cards

cass66 · 20/05/2008 21:51

some one referred to Candida a while back. Candida is the latin name for thrush (itchy white vaginal discharge). never understood why anyone would want to name their daughter it. but each to their own.

was at uni with a Melena, which is also a medical term meaning pooing out old smelly blood (spelt melaena). couldn't understand that one either, but less common!

if you like it, keep it. it is your choice.

pointydog · 20/05/2008 21:53

I worked with soemone once called Malena.

frogs · 20/05/2008 21:54

Just wanted to point out that you do run the risk of:

Ohmygod they killed Kenny! You bastards!

Janni · 20/05/2008 22:09

chegirl - she asked, we answered.

What would be the point of everyone saying 'yes it's lovely', if that's not what we think?

Quattrocento · 20/05/2008 22:14

Cass66 - I referred to Candida...facetiously... see rival thread... where Gonorrhea is being suggested as a vaguely shakespearian name

Piffle · 20/05/2008 22:46

cass long before candida was thrush it was Latin for white/purity...
tis actually a beautiful name but agree now unwise choice given thrush...
shame though

ninedragons · 20/05/2008 22:49

Personally I think the spelling is chavvy. And I believe Edward Kennedy is dying of cancer at the moment, so the most charitable interpretation that people will place on her is that she was named after someone who drove a girl off a bridge and killed her. If you give "Kennedy" as a word association test to Americans, quite a lot of them will think "curse".

And with so many surnames, you may be starting to sound like roll call at a boys' boarding school.

littlelamb · 20/05/2008 22:50

I don't think it's fair on a child to name them something that will label them (sorry) and incorrect spellings of a normalish name - why?? Dd has just started nursery where there is a little boy named Coeinn. I did at that one

edam · 20/05/2008 22:58

Oh dear. Please don't call your daughter Kennedy. But if you must, don't deliberately spell it incorrectly in order to be 'different'. Unless you are happy to set her up for a lifetime of explaining/excusing/correcting other people. Many of whom will be thinking 'blimey, her parents were a bit thick'.

Sorry, but you did ask!

edam · 20/05/2008 22:58

LL, is that supposed to be pron. Cohen? The mind boggles...

littlelamb · 20/05/2008 23:01

Yes Edam. I thought it was spelt Cohen until I saw his coat peg...
